Guess that answers the "why not Drake Johnson" thread....

Ace covered his last game in his weekly future blue thing. It's still on the front page if you scroll down
November 8th, 2011 at 9:57 AM ^
I was thinking the same thing. Ace didnt seem to think he was D1 worthy. Its hard to pass up a kid with elite speed and who is about to break the states rushing record. With his size, he could potentially play wr as well.

but I wonder if part of the reason they offered him was to make sure he doesn't come back to Michigan Stadium wearing an Iowa or Wisconsin or, God forbid, Michigan State helmet. Whatever, it's great to see a home-town guy do well enough to get a UM scholarship. He has the chance to continue a fairly long tradition of UM RBs also playing significant roles on the track team.

furthermore solidifies that Brady Hoke gets it. We now know he reads MGoBlog.

You've got to admit, the man has vision...
November 8th, 2011 at 10:29 AM ^
Hoke and co. read the board.
I'm betting they didn't know any of that till it was posted.
November 8th, 2011 at 11:02 AM ^
I would love to see this kid dominate and after what wresler went through become a prophet.
November 8th, 2011 at 11:42 AM ^
Making a claim and saying "wrestler IT!!" just doesn't have the same ring....
November 8th, 2011 at 9:51 AM ^
Rivals only has an EMU offer listed
has our recruiting train slowed down? s/
Congrats to the kid, and I hope he proves the experts wrong!
the drake!

Love the Drake!

aawolverine's benefit. (I think that's his handle now...he's changed a few times, and always gets the reference....glad someone else did too).

Is that Red Dragon Ancient (8hp/hd) or merely Very Old (7 hp/hd)? Should I use Otiluke's Freezing Sphere on it or go with the Cone of Cold?

If you don't know the difference between a drake and a dragon. ;-)
November 9th, 2011 at 7:36 AM ^
There is a difference between a Drake and a Dragon in D&D?
I guess I should have included 1st Edition (aka AD&D) in my geek tag. I haven't played pen-and-paper D&D in about 20 years, just on the computer (Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights).
EDIT: I just noticed that "Drake" has no wings. D'oh!
November 8th, 2011 at 10:31 AM ^
I believe Charles Drake came in as a RB, but then went to DB. This followed...
November 8th, 2011 at 10:40 AM ^
This is also a Drake...
November 8th, 2011 at 10:48 AM ^
I usually think of the Cap One Bowl...

I love when we keep in state talent home.

Here are the highlights from his sophomore/Jr years, embedding is disabled upon request.
November 8th, 2011 at 6:10 PM ^
Watching that video...he is definately a "strider" type of RB which means that his speed will look deceptive on film...and cuts as well...not a juker...but a one cut and go type of runner... Id like to see him put on 10 more good lbs...but on the whole
I believe that Drake will fit what Hoke-gess want to do on Offense.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:53 AM ^
welcome to the team. You're going to love Ann Arb-... oh, yeah
Looking forward to seeing records broken accross the street in the Big House
November 8th, 2011 at 9:53 AM ^
Congrats, Drake Johnson! I'm happy for this kid; it has to be tough to do all that you can, put up numbers like that, and still not feel like you have a chance to play for your dream school.
Good for him. Everybody loves the Drake!
November 8th, 2011 at 9:54 AM ^
It'll be interesting to see what happens this weekend; AA Pioneer plays Godin and CC. If Johnson goes off on this stout defense, I'll be sold.

November 8th, 2011 at 9:58 AM ^
Ace said on Twitter that a hello post would be up shortly.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:55 AM ^
The timing of this is somewhat peculiar. Why not wait and see how other leads pan-out first? It has been pretty obvious that Drake would jump at this offer. I feel like the spot could be utilized better elsewhere. His previous offer list begs the question...what was keeping him from getting BCS quality offers?
Anywho, congrats to the kid. He's put in the work and has been recognized. Hopefully he makes my doubts look unfounded. I'll pull for any guy who Hoke deems Michigan material.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:59 AM ^
When you figure out you want someone to commit to you, you want that commitment to begin as soon as possible.
November 8th, 2011 at 10:00 AM ^
It's an obvious and good question that Sam Webb has addressed a few times, and he's said that Johnson has attended very few off-season camps, and for that reason alone was sort of under the radar. He's also had a break-out year, and so it might also be the case that his performance prior to his senior season wasn't that notable.
November 8th, 2011 at 10:09 AM ^
November 8th, 2011 at 10:09 AM ^
But Sam didn't seem to be "cocking his eyebrow" at the offer, and sounded excited to get the kid.
November 8th, 2011 at 10:35 AM ^
Sam has been on this for a couple weeks. He thought that he would be the next guy behind Brionte in terms of an offer, and that his recruitment was picking up steam. Schools like Iowa and Wisconsin were starting to get involved. I think they identified Drake as a guy they would like to have, and didn't want him to get away.
I think I would feel a little better if Iowa and Wisconsin pulled the trigger on an offer because they seem to have a keen eye for under the radar backs, but if Hoke, anc Co. are happy, then I am happy.
November 8th, 2011 at 10:15 AM ^
Are you by chance the same Don that calls into WTKA all the time?
November 8th, 2011 at 10:29 AM ^
Yes. Otherwise they have a remarkably similiar, middle of the road, not getting overhyped, fair style about them. And seeming knowledge of the same things.
Which always makes it kind of a kick when he calls when Brian's on WTKA.
November 8th, 2011 at 10:39 AM ^
Based on what I saw, Dunn was the more impressive RB. Johnson didn't seem to exhibit lights-out speed, and Dunn was more dangerous in broken-field situations. Regardless, I'm going to trust Hoke, Jackson & Co. on this one.
November 8th, 2011 at 10:37 AM ^
It's entirely possible that they've already seen how their offers to Dunn and other big fish have panned out. Just because you don't know, doesn't mean they don't.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:58 AM ^
I can't wait to see him put up 3000 yard rushing seasons at Michigan. This is going to be awesome.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:58 AM ^
Can he play wide receiver? Seems very un MANBALL. Glad to have you Drake. Welcome and Go Blue!
November 8th, 2011 at 10:12 AM ^
He's a speedster who is currently listed at 6'1 205. After some weight gain he goes from maybe manball, to MANNBALL Z!
November 8th, 2011 at 10:02 AM ^
from his press conference and goes after two backs a class we could be looking at some nice classes. Johnson is a burner and for a basher I'd love to see Dunn (or Brown), and then next year I'm already crossing my fingers for a Issac and Shallman tandem coming in!
November 8th, 2011 at 10:04 AM ^
In case anyone is interested: AA Pioneer (Johnson) plays at CC (Godin and Shallman) on Saturday at 1:00. Cass Tech (RJS and Richardson) visits DeLasalle (Morris) Friday at 7:00.
November 8th, 2011 at 10:05 AM ^
Better than Dunn or Marshall I suppose...
