Lewan v. Gholson story
I don't know where the thread went, but here is the story about what Lewan supposedly said to Gholson on Saturday. This is taken from an MSU message board. The reason I am posting this is I didn't want anyone to think that the rumor that was posted here a few minutes ago is in any way true. It is not.
This story is a non-story, and the media is kind of shamelessly trying to keep this one going. I really hope this puts it to bed once and for all.
William Gholston was called "Tom" by Lewan during the game (he mentioned that in the post game). Some in the media are taking this as a racial slur as in "Uncle Tom". That is not what actually was meant when Lewan said it. From last weeks Red Cedar Rumblings (sorry for quoting paid content, but I think it's worth it so that this story dies):
**Will Gholston was a Michigan fan growing up. He was also close to committing to the Wolverines at one point during his recruitment … until a fateful trip to Ann Arbor.
"I was there on a recruiting trip," Gholston said. “They were calling me Tom and junk. That messed me up. I was sitting there talking and they keep saying, ‘Tom.’ I was looking back like, ‘Who is this guy talking to, my name isn't Tom?’ After that I started coming back to Michigan State a lot.
“It made an impact. That wasn't the biggest part, but how can't you remember my name? Call me William, Will, or call me ‘2.’ That's cool, too. Not Tom. My name doesn't even start with a ‘T’. I was going to Michigan a lot. Michigan was high on my list for a while. It was like Michigan and Michigan State, neck-and-neck. They were in my top three. That freaked me out. They didn't even know my name and I had been coming up there for three weeks. I was close to going to Michigan."
He was trying to get under Gholston's skin by calling him something that he knew bothered him during his recruitment. Not a racial slur.

At this current juncture I feel the same way about losing Gholston as I feel about losing Pryor.
Edit: Also kudos to Lewan for doing his homework. He got under Gholston's skin within the rules and earned the team 15 yards. Additionally he might have gotten a solid player on a division competitor suspended for an important game. I have no problem with this.

You win.

Thats creeping me out.

Doing the research for trash sounds a lot like what Jalen Rose use to do back in the Fab Five days.
October 17th, 2011 at 7:10 PM ^
You sir are an embarassment. Lewan has more of a history of being dirty than Gholston does. And anyways, i'll take a productive, dirty player everyday if we win. You go ahead and enjoy losing to MSU. Personally I hate it.
October 17th, 2011 at 7:14 PM ^
You'll take a dirty player just so that you win some games? Don't be a douche.
October 17th, 2011 at 7:37 PM ^
Things are not right in the world when we can't send people like this to Bolivia.
October 17th, 2011 at 7:46 PM ^
then I don't understand why you wouldn't just be happier as a State fan.
October 17th, 2011 at 11:28 PM ^
I wish you were a State fan...
October 18th, 2011 at 10:30 AM ^
Then you don't understand Michigan football. We are not Miami or MSU. We win (and sometimes lose) but we do it within the rules and with class and sportsmanship.
October 18th, 2011 at 12:36 AM ^
To be fair, Lewan is probably our version this year of the guy who walks those ethically grey competive areas most closely, although I'd never see him decapitating a helpless QB.
October 18th, 2011 at 7:43 AM ^
Lewan got flagged a few times last year for a late shove, etc. I don't recall any instance where he dove late onto a pile and tried to twist a QB's head around by the facemask. The future Jackson resident probably outweighs Denard by 75 pounds or so.
Lewan may be our hothead, but that doesn't put him in the Gholston category.

The other thread got deleted partly because it lacked a source.
October 17th, 2011 at 5:46 PM ^
Mods removed it. I was the one who posted it, mostly looking for more info like what you posted in this topic.
As strange as it feels to say this, good call on deleting my thread, faceless moderator. I suggest that this one be kept, though - hopefully anyone wondering about it will see this.
October 17th, 2011 at 5:46 PM ^
That's a little disapointing that we could've had this kid and whoever it was didn't even know his name
October 17th, 2011 at 5:57 PM ^
...about our chances to land William Gholston of Detroit Southeastern, cousin of Vernon (OSU) Gholston.
Watching (William) Gholston explain to the press last week that he went to shake Brady Hoke's hand and tell him "Thanks" for "turning around" the programs at Ball State and San Diego State and now Michigan, because Gholston appreciates "the competition." Even the RCMB was laughing at that one. I just think the guy is a sociopath.
Anyway, if this can turn into a very bad case of Drew Sharpton misinterpreting a story through an unreliable source, it could be nice.
October 17th, 2011 at 6:11 PM ^
Gholston's lack of interest in UM had everything to do with his biased coach/guardian, not who his cousin was.
Carr really did blow it badly with Vernon. I had a close friend at Cass Tech who was a classmate of VG and he confirmed that he did grow up a big Michigan fan. Said he saw Tressel in the school for a personal visit and that OSU offered him almost a full year before we did, which flattered him. He was put off by how long LC took to show interest.
October 17th, 2011 at 6:18 PM ^
Wow. Just Wow. If that is true about Gholston he is quite the smug asshole. I saw him run towards Hoke after the game but I figured maybe he was apologizing for his unsportsmanlike conduct during the game. Well, at least he has a few more years of playing the Wolverines to get what he is due!

Watch carefully. At about the 1:04 mark. It's the weirdest thing. Now, I've seen the video of Gholston rushing up to Hoke, Harbaugh-style, to shake is hand(!?) So too did the reporter, I gather, who sounded like he didn't quite know what to expect when he asked Gholston about what he said to Hoke.
And Gholston started out with the "Thanks" part, and then wandered off into that bullshit cockamamie story about Ball State and San Diego State.
There's little doubt in my mind that Gholston ran up to Hoke to "Thank" Hoke for somthing like never recruiting him, or for something similar. Or worse. Anyway, I'll let you be the judge for yourself. As far as I am concerned, it is just the worst, most transparent sort of fabrication. Pathological, really.
October 17th, 2011 at 8:29 PM ^
Agreed.
October 18th, 2011 at 12:31 AM ^
I can't believe some of you believe this drivel. Section 1 has no basis or theory for what was said, he's just speculating.
October 17th, 2011 at 5:47 PM ^
why people don't get it when things are deleted baffles my mind.
October 17th, 2011 at 6:15 PM ^
I'd rather that the record get set straight than leave this rumor hang out there. Now, I'll be able to fire back with facts if someone brings up this rumor to me.
October 17th, 2011 at 5:48 PM ^
Gholston has no self restraint
October 17th, 2011 at 5:48 PM ^
Sorry to nuke the other one... but at least there is some substance now.
KEEP THINGS CIVIL PLEASE EVERYONE...
October 17th, 2011 at 6:07 PM ^
does a repost from RCMB count as more substance?
October 17th, 2011 at 6:12 PM ^
No question. But poorly sourced but fleshed-out story >> Vague, detail-less rumor with unfounded accusations of racism citing Teh Twitters.
October 17th, 2011 at 6:52 PM ^
they're destroying him on that thread because he came up with a story that could plausibly explain it. he doesn't know anything other than a racist term (not even which term it is) may have been put out there. it'd be the equivalent of me making a post saying "it was all a misunderstanding, he was telling Gholston to get bigger next year" and it being considered a poorly sourced fleshed-out story. he made up what he thought it could be - i don't even think Tom is the 'known' term.
kill this thread.
October 17th, 2011 at 11:18 PM ^
I've read this post three times and I still have no idea what you are talking about.
October 17th, 2011 at 5:49 PM ^
No he didn't commit here because he LIVED with his Sparty Slappy coach who was fired after the season for tampering and then hired by MSU. That's why he signed with MSU.
October 17th, 2011 at 5:52 PM ^
I'm sure they make a point of calling people by something other than their name. On top of that, Lewan was aware of it, and knew it bothered him. Yeah, there is more (or less) to this one.
October 17th, 2011 at 5:52 PM ^
But....But......they swear that Drew Sharp and Jim Comparoni confirmed this. How hard is it to find honest and credible journalism anymore?
October 17th, 2011 at 6:05 PM ^
...they confirmed that Lewan called Gholston "Tom" and then drew the not-so-obvious and incorrect conclusion. Pretty much par for the couse, isn't it?
October 17th, 2011 at 5:52 PM ^
calling you by an incorrect name is probably not a reason to punch someone. Man up and beat him off his block. That would show him more than freaking punching him.
October 17th, 2011 at 5:53 PM ^
You know I wonder what he would be like if he played here? I think he has a temper problem and goes too far...but how much of that is on the Culture/Coaches? Dantonio has shown no restraint over his players and has no problems starting someone fresh out of jail, that sends a huge message to what the kids can and can't get away with up in EL
October 17th, 2011 at 8:08 PM ^
In my years since I first started going to Michigan ('06), I've never seen someone on our team take such a blantant cheap shot, much less 3 in one game (Mouton v ND yada yada. Not nearly as bad ime) so I have to assume some of it is coaching unless Lloyd, Richrod and Brady are all equally good at surpressing late teenage rage. And we had some serious things to rage about over the last few years

Lewan v. Gholson story
My name doesn't even start with a ‘T’.
Mr. Gholson,
In honor of recognizing that your name not start with a 'T', the MGoBoard has decided to remove the 'T' from your last name as well.
Hanks, MGoBoard
October 17th, 2011 at 6:23 PM ^
where is that story from?
I have a hard time believing that Lewan read RCMB to find that.
edit: I'm not trolling, I'm genuinely curious. I'd like to be able to "use" it, I just don't want to point someone to an apocryphal story on a message board
October 17th, 2011 at 5:57 PM ^
JACKASS
October 17th, 2011 at 6:02 PM ^
Perfect. Theres no T in it
October 17th, 2011 at 6:03 PM ^
William Gholston is a piece of human gutter trash. I would laugh my ass off if he played on Saturday and got a serious injury.
October 17th, 2011 at 6:19 PM ^
you are sounding like an Ohio fan
October 18th, 2011 at 12:33 AM ^
Please leave.
October 17th, 2011 at 6:03 PM ^
This actually angers me. Not that Wish Gholson had committed to Michigan. To me this speaks to how bizarre our last coaching staff really was. I supported them to the end, how do you bring a recruit on campus and not even remember his name?
October 17th, 2011 at 6:06 PM ^
It was dumb of them, but nobody from Renaissance/Southeastern was coming to Michigan anyway. The "Tom" thing was a footnote compared to the unashamed effort of the coaches to funnel their players away from Michigan.
October 17th, 2011 at 6:19 PM ^
Maybe our board is getting dumber by the day. Remember a kid named Fred Smith, 4 star WR out of Southeastern (same HS as Gholston) and life long M fan. Supposedly committed to State because Izzo told him he could play Bball there. His brother ran out of the gym crying when Fred announced. He never saw the Bball court even for a tryout. Now he's not playing football either.
William Gholston's guardian, Archie Collins, was hired by MSU after Gholston was signed, sealed, and delivered. He wanted to play LB comimg out of HS and you see where he is now. He was never coming to Michigan and everyone knew it. This William Gholston
October 17th, 2011 at 6:17 PM ^
The story did not say that the coaching staff was calling him Tom, so don't pin that on them. It sounds like it was the host players...Im sure the staff new the kid, regardless of their other inefficiencies.
October 17th, 2011 at 6:05 PM ^
he was ever close to committing to Michigan. Not Ever.
October 17th, 2011 at 6:12 PM ^
...is the essential point. This guy was never coming to UofM. He wants to put out stuff that makes UofM look like it doesn't / didn't know what it is / was doing, that's all. All this noise about "neck-and-neck with State" is just that: noise.
