Would you like to see alcohol sold in Michigan Stadium

Submitted by Blueblood2991 on

Saw this a few weeks ago that they are doing a study at OSU considering selling alcohol at games.  They would join Maryland, Minnesota, and Purdue as other B1G teams that sell booze.

Would you like to see alcohol sold at The Big House?

The two events at Michigan Stadium that have served alcohol (Winter Classic & Man U vs Real Madrid) yeilded only 3 arrests between them.  The only arrest from the soccer game was for the fan that jumped on the field.

NO

As a former stadium employee it was always the people who'd been drinking who were the ones who caused the most problems.  It's been booze free (relatively) for a long time, it ain't broke don't fix it.

I thought it was a Conference-wide ban in the 70's ...? An fwiw, banned at Folsom Field in Boulder but not in the Suite level. I guess I assumed UM would be same, only with far more fat cats demanding their G&T's

I think it would be a disservice to the fans watching these teams play if alcohol wasn't served.

I'm a beer drinker and would love to have a couple during the game; however, I would want those proceeds to go directly towards mitigating the cost of student tickets.

In (sort of) relation to this topic, I was making some highlight videos recently and I came across these shots of students with their beer cans from the 1986 Illinois game, Harbaugh's senior year.  We won 69-13 but they were obviously happy very early.

I think the game was tied, or at least very close, at halftime. Then Michigan went on a tear. As the clock ticked down in the 4th we were chanting "70, 70, 70!" Rumor was that (IL coach) Mike White put dog shit in a Michigan helmet as part of his halftime speech and that Bo heard about it shortly after. That was probably just rumor, but as I recall, he left the starters in late and it was one of the few times I recall thinking that Bo was actively running the score up on someone. That said, I'm 100% in favor of alcohol at games. Ann Arbor is not E. Lansing and prohibition doesn't work anyway. People who want to get booze in already do; let responsible fans enjoy a few drinks.

I was a student in the early 80s and was able to carry in a 12-pack on my shoulder every Saturday. The middle aged alums made a habit of carrying in too. My impression, of the students that drink now, is that they get obliterated before they enter the gates. Sure we drank a few before the game, but if we wanted to get drunk at least we could pace ourselves to make it through four quarters without falling down. So, I guess I would say no, don't sell it in the stadium but also go back to letting people carry in.

I always get hammered before Staee games anyway, and everyone else seems to as well... I guess its the difference of being freshly drunk during the game or bingeing during it, which sounds fantastic, to be honest.

too many pro games ruined by drunks. The worse have been Lions games and a Tiger WS game where the people in front of us, after an inning or two of foul language within kid's ears, had one woman in their group throw up several times before they removed them.

Is it really that hard to not drink for 3 hours?!

I like boozing just as much as the next guy...but damn, do you NEED your fix that bad?!

Tailgate before. Go to the game. Tailgate after.

It's not worth the drunk assholes at the game...like MSU fans, OSU fans, etc.

four fans were selected at random at halftime, brought down onto the field where they were forced to chug a 40oz of malt liquor and then run two end-zone-to-end-zone wind sprints followed by 20 pushups and then had to try a 20yd field goal.

People who are going to be shitshows are getting drunk before the game or smuggling in. If anything alcohol in reasonable controllable amounts might dissuade people from getting so drunk beforehand. In my undergrad days I pregamed with a mind toward staying drunk through he second half.

As a season ticket holder that goes to every game. I vote NO.  Love the atmosphere the way it is......drunks are the biggest reason that I don't bring my kids to Lions games.

ESPN interviewed us last year on the golf course about this. Having been to a few WVU games and seeing it first hand, totally acceptable. Reduced the need for binge drinking before the game and increased revenue. Do it! If you're an irresponsible tool than that's on you.

It'd probably create a clusterfuck of people constantly shuffling in and out of their seats. So unless the AD decides to get a bunch of little beer-delivering drones, doesn't seem worth the hassle.

Ding, Ding, you hit the nail on the head.  It's not the drinking, but the people who would constantly be moving past me to get another that would drive me nuts.  Hell, my wife would be the first to jump!  Then, her walnut sized bladder would keep her shuffling down the row the next 3 quarters.  Gotta think no.  However, if they would set up a bar area--with flat screens and sound--in one of the suites or somewhere with the vendors, i wouldn't mind hanging out for part of a quarter and keeping my buzz going....just HATE wasting a good pre-game buzz!!  So, i'm officially, meh.

I don't think it would be a good idea. The one positive though, is that it might make people take it easier during the tailgate knowing they can have a few beers in the stadium.

tOSU + booze in the stadium should equal a ton of snarky posts from this group.

I'm disappointed in you guys.

I see the potential merits, like encouraging people to drink less at the tailgate, but I'd rather not. Alcohol sold in the stadium changes the atmosphere of the game and makes it considerably worse.

Anyone who's been to any NFL game, particularly like a Packers/Lions, Giants/Eagles, or Pats/Jets game, knows exactly what I mean. Last thing you need is a group of OSU and Michigan fans running their mouths off at each other, and then some guy takes it too far and throws his beer on the other guy, then the other guy says something about the first guy's girlfriend, and then you have a full scale brawl that starts spilling over into other sections, and becomes a real danger to everyone. Don't be so naive to think "that won't happen here," because one day, it would.

Not something you want your kids to be exposed to, no matter what side you root for. Keep it out of the stadium.

I would be proud of my kid if he laid the smack down on a drunk opposite team fan that was acting like an a-hole. I'm joking . I've been to many sporting events with and without booze. Selling beer inside the stadium would make no difference. The party never stops for the ones who want to party. They will get drunk and make an ass of themselves because that what they like. I know because I've been known to be that guy once or twice.

Please no!

Been to a few NFL Ravens games barraged by "F" Bombs .....with my young daughter. Vowed I would never return and haven't. If you hVe to have alcohol to enjoy a Michigan game I don't understand it. Love the purity of the game. Have your drinks later to celebrate.

grown adults should be allowed to drink beer at a football game. It would raise revenue and keep fans in their seats at halftime. those who are irresponsible with alcohol will be drunk no matter what.
