Will Mallory announced he's making commitment tonight

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on

Will Mallory just posted on Twitter he's making his commitment at 8pm tonight. Anyone more in the know been reading any tea leaves on this?

I mean no disrespect because I genuinely appreciate your Crystal Ball obsession, but apparently nobody here knows.  And it really doesn't matter.

With the staff we have and style we run here and the resources at Michigan and given his family ties and the Asiasi transfer and taking 0 TEs last year, if a quality TE doesn't jump at a Michigan offer, he has different priorities than playing early and winning a lot of games.

So either Mallory is dumb, way too into Miami Beach bewbs, or we don't want him.  And frankly, I'm not sure I care which one of those 3 is true.

Uh...  Have you ever BEEN to Coral Gables?  17-year-old me would be very impressed by the scenery down there.  Plus, the school is not in the same class as Michigan academically, but it's not one of the MIssissippi schools either.

He could like Miami more than Michigan for myriad reasons, none of which may be "dumb".

Miami is one heck of a school academically.  It is probably the highest ranked academic school in FL.  It may not be ranked as high as Michigan, but it is still an incredibly solid academic institution.

Also, you either love Coral Gables or hate it.  I hate it.  It is Africa hot 10 months out of the year, quite ugly except of the beach, but it does have lots and lots of beautiful women.

Maybe a Florida kid that likes the weather better in Miami?  Who knows, or maybe a girlfriend staying south too?  Maybe UM is too much of a meritocracy?  Lots of possible reasons, reasonable ones, for a 4 star legacy to not commit to UM.  Maybe he's committing today so its appears that he's breaking up with UM, not vice versa.

Even if Mallory doesn't commit to Michigan tonight, I would still say the odds of him ending up here are pretty good. We certainly want him, the idea that we don't is just dumb.

It's not dumb that he would pick Miami. A) It's much closer to his Jacksonville home in both distance and climate. B) Uh, Miami puts a ton of TEs in the league. They won't use TEs as much as Harbaugh, but maybe you have heard of Greg Olsen, Jimmy Graham, Kellen Winslow, Jeremy Shockey. David Njoku will be drafted in the first two rounds next week. Miami could really be considered Tight End U as of the last 20 years.

I feel like Will Ferrell in Zoolander - like "I'm taking crazy pills".

Guys, I know it's not dumb to pick Miami.  I was being snarky and dismissive and ultimately saying "He committed for any number of reasons, Reddogrjw, and it doesn't matter which one is correct."

Allow me to amend:  Maybe he is actually a stupid person.  Maybe he really does like boobs too much.  Or maybe he likes Mark Richt more than Jim Harbaugh, or Miami's TE coach more than Michigan's (is that still Jay?).  Maybe Miami is giving him a crap-ton of money.  Maybe he likes their Dean of Whatever School better than Michigan's equivalent.  Maybe he likes Miami's system better.  Maybe he'd rather be a receiver and not a Kaiju blocker.  Maybe he doesn't want to live in his family's shadow in Ann Arbor and is choosing to blaze his own trail.  Maybe he prefers the ACC to the B1G.  Maybe he likes Miami's roster better.  Maybe he likes Florida weather.  Maybe he likes Orange and Green.  Or Maybe Jim Harbaugh had better options and told him he's a conditional take.

Does that cover it?  Do I have to keep going?

Now, I'll close just the same way I did above because that's the only thing that matters:

Frankly, I'm not sure I care which one of those is true.

My 3 option summary was not intended to be all-encompassing.  I'm happy I gave you guys an opportunity to show off your Miami knowledge though.  A thorough dose of "WELL, ACTUALLY" that will keep me full until Fall Practice.

And for the record, ACTYULLY, Mark Richt didn't coach any of those guys with the exception of Nkoju.  Do you think Harbaugh sells Michigan recruits on Funchess and Jay Riemersma?  If you were half as smart as you want me to think you are, you would have used any number of the garbage UGA Tight Ends that Richt sent to the NFL like Arthur Lynch or Orson Charles.  Maybe YOU have heard of THEM?  Or do you think Mallory committed because of the legacy of Leonard Pope?

Good talk, toolbox.

And who is pissy again?

I didn't just disagree with Dr. Whatever his face is.  I took exception to his "Uh..... perhaps you've heard of these notable Miami TEs?" like I don't know who Jeremy Shockey is.  But somehow that's supposed to matter when Mark Richt is recruiting Will Mallory.

You see, ska4punkkid, it's not just that his point was dumb, it's that he tried to be condescending with his dumb point.  So yeah, I fired back.

Mad Hatter up there disagreed with me too.  But he makes me laugh and wasn't a prick about it.  I don't need to respond to him.

I don't know the guy above him either, but he was fine in his disagreement.

It's these other buttholes who got stuck on "he's dumb" and got so offended by a throw-away line that they never saw the forest for the trees.  Or Rabbit up there, explaining to me that good weather is better than bad weather.  I mean, are you serious?

This goes back to Reddogrjw asking incessantly whether we cooled or if we were out-recruited.  I responded to say I don't think you're going to find out and I don't care.  And I meant no ill-will toward him.  I like that guy.  He tracks CBz like all hell and people give him shit for his posts.

But something I said set a few people off and it turned into a neg-bang.

You call me pissy?  Look at the votes on my posts.  These aren't even bad posts.  I've called people much worse and I've been a much bigger prick in other threads THIS WEEK.  But people are all bent out of shape over God knows what.  And I see it all the time.  You see a post with 4 up and 15 down, people hit down before they even read.  Sheep mentality man.

So I'm pissy.  Cool.  Eat a full-fledged bag of dicks, ska4punkkid.  And if you don't know what I'm talking about, I'm not talking like a quart-sized ziplock with a couple little baby penises that you try to carry on at the airport.  I'm talking about an industrial-sized, Home Depot lawn bag full of girthy, hairy cocks, filled right to the brim.  Where you look at it and you're like, "I gotta eat all those dicks?  How are they not spilling out of the top?"  And I'm like, oh yeah, even the uncircumsized ones.   That's my pissy wish for you.

Have a great weekend everybody!  <3

I looked at your previous posts this week, and I couldn't find other threads in which you were a bigger prick. It's just in this thread. Sorry to burst your bubble.

He likes Adidas, he prefers half-empty stadiums, he's a fan of terrifying wind storms, he enjoys salsa music, he's alergic to snow, he likes Cuban food, Vinnie Testeverde said he should, and Mark Richt told him he coached up Kellen Winslow.

Halfway through this message I was going to give him an upvote for trying, but I guess some people can't help themselves. And it's not worth a separate post, but his next message only affirmed it. The only thing more dickish than a dick is one that won't shut up.

Remember that time you tried to make a joke about Steve Fisher taking over for Berenson and not a single person found it funny enough to even upvote? Yeah, neither does anybody else. Dont refer to me in the 3rd person like you're on the team or something. Nobody cares about your posts. (Edit: Hey I got you an upvote! You're welcome. Nobody will ever know it was pity.) Is that dick enough for you?

LOL I am so confused??? It was Gucci's point! I came back and said the same was true of Harbaugh at Michigan (therefore it is not a distinguishing, negative factor for Miami/Richt).

Yeah you really sent some people into a conniption here.

Miami's leading tight end had more yards and touchdowns than Butt and their second leading tight end had over 300 yards recieving? Further, unless someone on the roster leaves early, we will have more returning tight ends than Miami does?

All of you guys are missing the point of my comment which is to say it doesn't matter why he's choosing Miami. Reddog (?) , or whomever I responded to, has asked 5 times in this thread and the one he linked whether we cooled or we lost. I was responding to say we probably will never know and I don't know why I should care.

Without suggesting that Mallory is dumb if he doesn;t choose Michigan. If you'd made your comment this way in the first place, you probably would not be getting all the negs. i don't care what his reasons are either, I just don't see the need to criticize the kid.

If I knew everybody was going to throw a hissy fit anout the most unimportant and tongue-in-cheek line in the post, i would've skipped it. Seriously, I dont think Mallory's own mother would react this way. Oh well.

You suggested a number of reasonable reasons to go to Michigan and a bunch of pretty silly reasons to go to Miami. It's hard to read your post and not think that you were saying the smart choice was Michigan and the stupid choice Miami. I just found it a dickish way to characterize an 18 year old's decision making process. You may also want to consider that if a bunch of people react to your post like you're being a dick, you are in fact being a dick and they are not just throwing hissy fits. Instead of continuing to blame others, maybe you should take a deep breathe and move on.

Pepto Bismol

April 21st, 2017 at 7:47 PM ^

That's because I'm a Michigan fan on a Michigan forum. The smart choice is Michigan every time, for every recruit, regardless of competition or depth chart. That's not reality, of course, but every single person that I fired back at missed the tongue-in-cheek tone in the first place and went "high horse" on a nonsense comment. I also said he might choose Miami because he likes boobs. Every person who thinks I'm a dick here is somebody who missed the joke in the first place, and i couldn't care less about their feelings. There are upvotes on every one of my posts -- Those guys got it and probably had a good chuckle with me watching how absurd this entire exchange became. Instead of reading for themselves, guys like you saw the neg-fest happening and were inclined to fire their own "I'm smart" shots at me. I said Mallory would choose Miami because he's dumb or he likes boobs. And so far about 30 people took that seriously and actually got mad about it. The reaction is hilarious and a fantastic example of mob mentality. I'm not the one that needs to take the breath, dc. Up above, some guy quoted The Big Lebowski that hes calmer than I am, to which I replied the next line from the movie about waiving a gun around. It was a movie quote exchange and im getting negged because people either dont get the joke or are having a neg-bang hissy-fit. Its comical. I dont need to take a breath. Before I left work, above, a guy jokingly asked me to give him 7 or 8 more examples of why Mallory would go Miami. I couldnt at the time, and got negged, but just edited that post to add 8 more ridiculous reasons to go to Miami. It's a joke. It's funny, or at least not-offensive in any way. It continues to get down-voted. Why? Because people are throwing a temper-tantrum and they probably couldn't even tell you why. I'm not the one that needs to take a breath. Have a good night.

Because other people are, I'm negging you because, contrary to your opinion of me, I've read your posts and I think you're acting like an ass.

Pepto Bismol is way off on his post and very ignorant for putting that it has to be one of his three reasons:

  • He is from Florida (yeah it's the opposite end, but it is Driveable). Michigan is not. Maybe he wants to stay somewhat close to home.
  • Maybe he hates the cold. Some southern kids don't want to live in Michigan winters. I wouldn't blame him and it Doesn't mean he is dumb!!
  • Even though we didn't take a TE, our TE position is not automatic playing time. When He steps on campus you will have , RS Sen Ian Bunting, RS Junior Gentry, RS Junior Wheatley, RS Soph Nick Eubanks, RS Soph Sean McKeon. Plus on top of that, Michigan could take 3 TE's this class. Playing early would not be a given. And actually I am not super familiar with Miami's roster. But a quick search shows they don't have many TE's on their roster. They are a pro-style offense that also uses their TE's. So Playing time actually could be easier there.
  • Not sure why people are so hung up on his dad played here. My dad graduated from Michigan St, but I never wanted to go there. Where my dad went to college didn't play a roll in any sort of way when I was picking my college.

That last point is the case for A LOT of people (me included). Not sure why people get so hung up on it when it comes to student athletes. I'm sure Mallory isn't the only person with a scholarship to Michigan and a parent who went there and didn't end up attending Michigan. I just watched GRIII on Highly Questionable...he didn't follow his dad and it worked in Michigan's favor.

I agree with your general sentiment, but I think it's the fact that the Mallory connection goes well beyond "Will has scholarship offer, Dad went to Michigan" or even "Will has scholarship, Dad played at Michigan" that made me think it was highly likely Will would wind up at Michigan.  Beyond his Dad playing at Michigan, both of Dad's brothers also played at Michigan, and one of them also coached at Michigan.  Plus, Dad played at Michigan with Jim Harbaugh.  That's an awful lot of family affinity for Michigan football plus a connection to our head coach that seems exceedingly rare for a recruit.

Willing to make an unpeeled pineapple bet that he doesn't choose Miami over Michigan. His whole family is Michigan.

I think he moved it up to secure a spot, as we most likely gained a silent commitment from Mustapha Muhammad last weekend and are looking good for Jeremy Ruckert.

DrMantisToboggan

Fuck, I mean I could be wrong. I've never claimed to be a smart man. It would just really, really surprise me, given everything about him. Even with his recent visit to Miami.

Edit: Also, with a commitment to anyone but Michigan tonight, I highly doubt we would stop recruiting a 4-star legacy TE.
