Who Gets Denarded This Offseason

Submitted by bonobojones on

This time last year, how many of you were thinking "I can't wait until next year when Denard Robinson will become one of the most dynamic and statistically dominant offensive players in Michigan history."  Or were you thinking, "Next Year Denard could be a great slot or maybe even a 3rd down/wildcat threat."  The point is, I think we are way to quick at dismissing young players on this board.  This year, since so many starters struggled, the assumption seems to be that every young kid riding the bench must be even worse.  Or even worse, true freshmen who were forced to play and got blown up were written off (ie. Cullen Christian).  Sure, but that is the nature of being a young player, there is the distinct possibly of massive improvement.  So on a more positive note, I just want to start a prediction thread on which young players (2011 underclassmen) will have big break-out seasons next year.

My Picks:

1.  Courtney Avery-  Will become a lock down man coverage corner in the new scheme

2.  Issiah Bell -  Needed extra time after transforming body into linebacker.

3.  Fitz - The big health if.  But if man...if.

As a little side experiment, I will tally all the votes and post results next week.  One thing I want to look for is if there is a correlation between mgopoints and the accuracy of prediction. That will have to wait until next year, but I  always wanted to know if spending this much time on this site makes someone more knowledgeable in a meaningful way.  So don't let me down 10,000+ pointers.

Big butt /no homo, and Hoke apparently shares my bigg butt /no homo philosophy.  That coupled w/ him getting PT at ND before the leg injury.   I'm going to say Wilkins as well, just based on his increase in size, and another offseason to continue to add good weight.

Odoms - on return teams.  Did anyone else think he looked better than anyone has in years during that bowl game?  Confident and quick, one of the few highlights all day.

im not as high on black as some others. i think the line would be too weak against the run with Roh and Black at the end spots.  id much rather have van bergen at DE, but that of course requires one of two things: either one of the blobs in the middle turns into a viable one-tech, or talbott grows enough to play the three-tech. if Van Bergen ends up at the three-tech, Im not so sure black is ur starter at DE next yr.

Now for what this thread is really about:

Defense:

Courtney Avery - I think hes got the cover skills, he just needs to eat something and lift something.

Offense:

Koger - hes got the tools, just needs to catch the damn ball. Both TEs should be getting more looks in the new offense.

and predict Cameron Gordon. If they'd give him a 1980's jersey (think Doug Flutie), his abs would scare anyone from running a route anywhere near him.

One of the three big nose tackles (I'd put my money on Washington right now), one of the running backs (cash on Shaw or a healthy Fitz), and Marvin Robinson at FS.  If those three happen we can be a very good team next year.

With Mattison coaching them up, I predict a leap for:

1) Kenny Demens - We've all seen flashes of good play, but I think Mattison brings out the beast in him.

2) Carvin Johnson - Tough kid with football smarts. He should be a heavy hitter if he stays healthy.

3) Craig Roh - Finally the breakout monster year we've been waiting on.

Is it current mgopoints, bc I plan on having at least 15 grand by the end of next year. There are so many guys to choose from and with so much upside. On offense, I have to go with a running back bc one of them is about to see what its like to be a featured back. So I am going to go with Hopkins. On defense, I am just waiting for Roh to absolutely start shredding through offensive lines.

The one person that I really hope blows up this year is Jake Ryan. If we can solidify our linebacking core with him/demens/and maybe furman/gordon/bell, I think we'll be in for a treat. From everything I've read and heard about Ryan, it seems like his upside is huge and hopefully an off-season of bulking up will help.

i am putting in the effort in the offseason, familiarizing myself with various chart making software and learning to write code to make my posts even more insightful.  and i have been taking improv classes so that my comedic posts will be even more spontaneous and off the wall.  i am shooting for a 8000 mgopoint fall

personal - i would like to see shaw be healthy for a full year, i think he has put in a lot of time and deserves to finally be in the offensive system he originally committed to.

actual - in terms of improvement, i think vinopal takes a big step in the offseason, gets bulkier and becomes a solid special teamer.  he got a ton of time last year, showed a few good things, more bad things, but i think he can be one of those guys that shines as a gunner on punt teams.  in two years he will be a cagey, sure tackling, veteran.

I'm going with Will Campbell.  Back on D where he belongs, being coached by defensive minds that will know what to do with him.  We've seen the occasional 4- and 5-star recruits turn out to be busts, but I refuse to believe Campbell is one of those. Mattison and Co will unleash this man's inner beast and he will hurt fools.

I see Junior really flourishing in the new offense.  He's big, has good hands, and able to stretch the field.  In fact, I think all of the receivers are going to see increased production next year.  Remember that SDSU had two of the top 15 receivers in the nation last year.  Koger is also going to be a huge beneficiary.  My list goes like this:

Offense:

1) Junior Hemingway

2) Kevin Koger

3)Darryl Stonum

Defense:

1) JT Floyd (at FS)

2) Quinton Washington

3) Craig Roh

This seems like fun.

1. Will Campbell - More a prayer than anything else cause his emergence as a beast is key.

2. Darryl Stonum - Obvious because of move to pro-style offense

3. Kevin Koger - See: Stonum, Darryl.

4. Carvin Johnson - Showed a lot of promise at the beginning of the year before the injury.

I think Black, Hopkins, and Avery will all make some significant jumps in their second year. They will have the experience (especially Avery) to become good players for this team. I hope more make a big jump, but those three I see definitely making a bigger impact this fall.

Koger.  He has the potential to be a great weapon in the passing game with his size and speed.  TE was not a big factor in the RR/Magee offense (in fact, they didn't even use one at WVU), other than as a downfield blocker.  He has 36 career receptions in three years.  I wouldn't be surprised if he approached that number in 2011.

Despite the poor play overall from the D, I thought he played well as a Frosh. (position, hips, angles, ect...) I thought he made the most out of the available playing time amongst the other youngsters.

My second pick: Kenny Demens

I can't wait for Demens (barring surgery) to receive some lessons from Mattison & Co.  I think Kenny is gonna be a baller!

P.S. It would not surprise me a bit if Mr. Furman is competing for time on the field.

Will one will surely be a RB, since as now Fred Jackson says, the RB is now again, being part of the offense.  Another will be a WR who will pull away from the pack, based on the offense.  And on defense, perhaps the MLB if he is an underclassman. Maybe Ryan?

I hope that Denard gets Denarded. Does that make any sense at all? Since we have a new offense, I just hope that DRob learns to read defenses and get his footwork right so he will be awesome this Fall. That's why I say Denard. If he can run a pro offense almost as good as he ran the spread, and I said almost. We should be better next year!! Fingers crossed.

In this offense the running back is going to get a lot of yardage and catch a lot of passes.

I'm thinking Mike Shaw or Touissaint.

Then my own brain rebels, kicks my ass and calls me stupid for not remembering about Michigan's 5 year streak of having zero healthy running backs on the field.   Angry RB hating God.  Worship that? Never.

Like Denard a year prior, his inexperience overwhelmed his awesome athletic ability.  a year later, the inexperience is gone, and the awesome athletic ability starts to shine.  Halfway through the year we'll be reminiscing about "when we thought Cam was bad" like in the '10 Notre Dame game.

Like Bo said, (or was it Al McGuire?):  "the best thing about freshman . . . "
