Sounds like coach is hunkering down here in AA for the long haul.
Love his attitude and outlook on life. Pure. Honest. Driven. Simple.
We are so lucky to have him here as our coach. Nooo-bodyyyy has it better than us. NOBODY.

Awesome account of Harbaugh's youth in Ann Arbor. Sounds a lot like mine across the state, in Muskegon.

The really interesting thing to me is that Harbaugh seems to have missed the countercultural-ness of Ann Arbor. To him, A2 of the 70s was like the Leave it to Beaver cul-de-sac.

I find what he didn't seem to register as interesting as what he does remember.

She was a kind and generous person.  Back in the day, the University ran an 'experimental' school (University High School, the "Cubs of the Wolverines") out of the School of Education building on South U., and Mrs. Trumm, as we called her, taught us German.  In the two years I took her class, she taught more than German, she taught us about life in Germany in the war years.  As a young woman, she escaped Berlin, as the Russians advanced on it, rolled up in a rug in the back of a truck.  Just one of the many reasons that Ann Arbor was a special place for lots of us to grow up in.

So "Who has it better than we have it"? . . .indeed. No one, insofar as I'm concerned. Just "give us this day our daily recruiting hype." Wednesday fast approacheth, and who's more excited than we?

He would always listen to Tigers games out on the front porch, and when they played the Indians and Vic Power would catch the ball one-handed, Rudy was horrified. He couldn’t stand it when fielders made one-handed catches. It drove him crazy. He wanted to see two hands catching the ball over the head. Every time. - Jim Harbaugh, talking about a former neighbor

I laughed because I had a coach that was the same way, and I actually got into trouble whenever I would attempt flashiness or make diving stops (which I could manage then anyway - maybe not so much now).

Really though, that was a great read and a great insight into the core of Jim Harbaugh and why he chose to come back to the town where he grew up and went to college. They way he shares it is very entertaining too (and it seems so easy for him to share at that level - I envy that in people), but I don't think we would expect anything less from him.

Gem of a topic & thread!  Thanks for sharing this...JH sharing his thoughts about A2 should go a long ways to shutting down future job speculation.

But it's interesting that they gave this vehicle to Harbaugh, when Mike Dantonio took his team to the playoffs this year.  I understand that Jeter may have something to do with it (I think he has an interest in this outlet), but not giving Mike Dantonio a similar bully pulpit strikes me as ... oh, what's the word?

Disrespectful.

Apparently it just wasn't funny.  So I'll take my beating.

But the core point is that this has to infuriate Meyers, Dantonio, Saban, Franklin, and so forth - to have a high prominence "placement piece" that spells out both Harbaugh's values and the things he thinks make Ann Arbor great this close to NSD is quite a coup.  The article reads like a well-done PSA on "why you should go to the University of Michigan".  It's flat-out brilliant.

I love the fact that Harbaugh is taking advantage of these free outlets to re-emphasize the points he undoubtedly makes on the recruiting trail.  And I think that our rivals have noticed and will notice this sort of savvy behavior moving forward.

And I loved to climb trees, so when I was finished, I would climb to the top of the tallest tree in our backyard and lay face down on the highest branch, just looking down, admiring my work.

This explains a thing or two.

Coach Harbaugh is such an inspiration on and off the field. As a father of two wonderful kids, I find JH to be an absolutely wonderful role model. Attack each day, take each thing and make the best out of it. When you live life with such opportunistic optimism, no body will ever have it better.

Having this published the day the dead period before signing day begins is genius. An opportunity to reach the remaining recruits and their families one last time with a positive message, while no other coach can. Who's got it better than us, indeed.

I think this should put to rest any doubt that Jim will retire as the head coach of Michigan football.

Great story. You can just tell Harbaugh loves Michigan and Ann Arbor. This is a job he wanted for a long, long time. And hopefully he stays for a long, long time.

This is what I have such a hard time explaining to people about Ann Arbor. I'm in the process of moving back to Michigan after living elsewhere for 15 years and hoping that we can find a way to end up in Ann Arbor (it makes sense for my job, but may not for my wife's job). I grew up in a different part of Michigan, but Ann Arbor is such a special place.

Great article by our coach. You can tell his passion for Michigan and the love he has for the community and it is contagious. To all those analysts saying Harbaugh wouldn't leave the NFL for the Michigan job, all I have to say is, "Who's got it better than us?

I wonder if this is Jim's response to reports that other schools are negative recruiting UM. Instead of coming out and saying other schools are taking cheapshots. Point out to the public, why you love AA and UM. Brilliant!!!

I wonder if when JH asked Jeter to come to signing of the Stars, having Jim write this article was s counter offer. Mutually beneficial all around, and great to see the team support.

Having lived in Ann Arbor, I get what he talked about. I had a great childhood growing up in a NYC suburb, a commuter town next to Paramus, the epic-center of this year's recruiting class.

I lost my mom just after Christmas but before she passed, i used to love to go visit my mom and dad and talk about growing up in our town, thanking them for what they gave me and how they made my childhood special.

In his story, you read everything you need to know about our coach and how his experience and childhood in Ann Arbor shaped his life, personality and career as a coach, obviously following in his dad's footsteps, creating competition as an everyday opportunity to learn, share and grow into a man learning the importance of appreciating home, family and a wonderful community. Many places in America are like Ann Arbor, but this town is special, and now we know how it shaped our coach.

I mean he cut the grass like he saw it done at the ballpark, he climbed the tree in his backyard to admire his work, he earned money by doing stuff for neighbors. I did all that  too, growing up, and I remember just as fondly. He's right about the universal feeling.

And he's right about the school and Michigan being that home away from home for the rest of your life. Glad he decided to move back for a third time. And anyone who has concerns about him doing the right thing recruiting kids for our team, ought to put the worry to rest.

You know he's doing it the right way, because that's the way he was raised,
