Where Will MBB Land In Polls This Week?

Submitted by bigike on November 29th, 2019 at 6:08 PM

This team is obviously under-rated. With wins over two top 10 teams this weekend, where do we end up when the new poll is released? Can we climb into the top 15....10?

I'm going to guess around 15.  We should be higher based on our resume, but I dont think polls will want to over-correct too badly.

Beat Louisville and we may be top 5.  Lose and we will be 20-25.

Honestly I see us in the top 10.  We're undefeated with two (quite impressive) wins over top-10 teams, and a couple wins over solid teams as well (Creighton and Iowa St).  I don't see how we're behind either of the teams we beat this weekend.

As a follow up, there are 3 teams in the country right now with 2 or more (but no one has more) wins against top 25 teams: Us (2-0), Florida St (also 2-0) and Oregon (2-2).  Oregon is automatically out because they have the two losses and although they're against good teams, we have beaten both of them.  FSU should be ranked relatively high, though their two wins are to far inferior teams than ours and they have the loss to Pitt.

To sum up what many others have said, our resume is by far the best in the country.

High.

Polls don't matter and I don't pay much attention to them, but... well, there's not much going on this afternoon, so I looked and here we are. This week's AP poll:

1. Duke (BAINNNNNN)
2. Louisville (it was a block)
3. Michigan State (hahahahaha)
4. Kansas (won their tournament, does have a loss this year)
5. Maryland (hasn't played anybody)
6. North Carolina (hahahahaha)
7. Virginia (undefeated)
8. Gonzaga (hahahahaha)
9. Kentucky (that Evansville loss, but has beaten MSU)
10. Ohio State (undefeated)
Oregon, Texas Tech, Seton Hall the next three.

A couple teams have individual big wins just as big as ours, though without looking closely I don't think anybody has two wins as good as our two.

There's no telling what voters will do when they just drop us in there. MSU now has two losses and teams like Maryland haven't even been tested. I'm guessing that we'll be late top ten, ahead of the teams we just smoked and maaaaybe OSU and MSU; we won't jump teams like Virginia, and Maryland probably gets the benefit of the doubt.

But who knows?

That Louisville game could, indeed, launch us to #1. It doesn't matter what we're ranked, of course, but just like last year the expectations are changing rapidly and seeding becomes a major consideration.

**********

BTW, hindsight is 50/50 or something. Last year Michigan started red-hot, but we had some serious offensive weaknesses that were exposed later. Specifically, there wasn't much outside shooting, and Iggy couldn't pass to save his life when he put the ball on the floor. Nobody that could efficiently create their own shot.

But I feel like this team is much sloppier than last year's team at the same time... and deeper with far fewer offensive weaknesses. DeJulius and Brooks can both shoot and drive. Franz can shoot, and in that one drive to get us to 47 points he looked like he could be deadly driving to the basket. Simpson can drive both ways. Livers can bomb from distance and is fleshing out the rest of his game.

And we've got incredible depth.

This team might be really, really, what-are-final-four-tickets-going-for-on-stubhub good.

I'll say #8.  They will keep Duke, Louisville, Kansas, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, and OSU ahead of us.  No way they can keep 2-loss MSU or two teams we just smoked ahead of us.

If we beat Louisville and Iowa, I can't see how anyone could vote us anywhere but #1.  If we lose to Louisville but beat Iowa, we should stay around #8.

My guess is 12th or 13th.  College basketball polls are pretty useless so nobody seems to get bent out of shape when they take a while to correct themselves.

MSU 4-2 with not top 10 wins and a loss to an unranked team.

UM 7-0 with 2 wins over top 10 teams.

MSU will drop to like 7and UM will be around 15.  Because Izzo is the greatest coach in all the land.

AP voters are not as dumb, generally speaking, as coach rankings. I suppose anything is possible, but I will be absolutely shocked if Michigan is around 15 in the AP poll. There is no way you look, even at a cursory level, at those convincing wins over multiple Top 12 teams and rank UM any lower than #6.

I think that's where UM will end up, behind Louisville, Maryland, Virginia, Kansas and some other team (probably Duke).

UM should be #4. No matter what, zero chance they'll be behind a two-loss MSU team that has struggled even in some of their wins.

We should be top 10 at a minimum. We beat all three teams convincingly. The media has hyped us up a lot, and our returning starters are big time winners in Simpson, Teske, and Livers. Juwan can coach. If we beat Louisville on Tuesday which is a big if, we will jump to number 1 without a doubt.

If we beat Louisville and Iowa we will be #1, and likely darn near unanimous as #1.

It's insane that this team only had a few top 25 votes to start the season, but I never expected them to play this well, particularly in the offensive side of the ball. It's pretty awesome.

Is say that rankings are for those who can’t get it done.  7-0 undefeated and unranked, we’ve done well without all of the pomp and circumstance, no. 1!!!

If Iowa St can beat Seton Hall, that only improves the quality of our resume, given our wins include 2 transitive wins over Oregon and Seton Hall.

Lot of season left, and polls don't really matter, but it would be cool to beat the record for biggest jump from unranked to highest rank.  Apparently, Kansas jumped from NR to #4 in 89-90.

I'm good with being 2 or 3 heading into Filthville.

CBS sports updated their rankings yesterday after we beat UNC (their #4). They dropped to #13, then we were ranked #7, coming up from #26.

They had the Zags at #5 entering our game with them, so seems like we could be at least top 5, with Louisville, Kansas, MD, UVA as the 4 ahead of us - seems reasonable

Based on resume, they should be at least top 5, possibly #1.  They have a better record and better wins than anybody in the country.  They should be above MSU, Kentucky and Duke since all have very bad losses.

I suspect they may end up #6-10 though due to bias.
