What would happen if Turner and Witty don't qualify?

Submitted by Magnus on
It's possible that Adrian Witty and Justin Turner won't get past the Clearinghouse. I like to think about hypotheticals, so what do you think the team would do to fix the depth issues at cornerback? Our only three scholarship cornerbacks would be Boubacar Cissoko, Donovan Warren, and J.T. Floyd. After that it would be Zach Johnson, probably. Would we move Woolfolk back to CB? Would we move James Rogers back to CB? Would we stick with what we've got. Personally, I think moving Rogers would have the least negative effect on the team. He's not getting much playing time on offense, and he would have some time to adjust back to playing cornerback. If cornerbacks get hurt, it's usually a quad or hamstring strain, since they're not quite as physically involved as many other players; therefore, Cissoko and Warren are less likely to get injured than, say, a defensive lineman, offensive lineman, or running back. Zach Johnson is also a good special teams player, so I think he could be adequate as a corner as long as Greg Robinson doesn't leave him on an island. Hypothetical depth chart (that I hope isn't necessary): Warren Cissoko Floyd Rogers Johnson Woolfolk (if there are massive injuries)

If JT Turner doesn't qualify I would expect Michael Williams to play the nickel back spot while rotating in another safety (assuming he even starts at safety). If Cissoko or Warren get hurt though, we're probably screwed given that Williams is probably not suited to play out and out corner.

does not qualify, then Woolfork would slide back to CB and our safeties would be Williams and Vlad. Or Woolfork remains at safety and he slides down to nickel back when Williams/Vlad come on the field and replace him at safety. Either of these could work as long as Woolfork doen't seem overwhelmed if he has to move back and forth. Hopefully Woolfork is an intelligent football player who knows the responsibilities of the entire secondary.

Florida recruited him as a db. If it's late in the season and one of Cissoko/Warren get injured he'd probably be give a shot. Only if its late in the season and Tate wins the QB job outright.

I don't see that happening unless it is clear to the coaches that he won't pan out at QB, and Sheridan/Furrha is way ahead in the battle for #2. He would have very little knowledge of the defense and zero practice as a DB. If it was late in the season he probably wouldn't see the field for the rest of the year anyway.

every able-bodied man will go through a Barwis-ian workout after which they will be assigned a position that they will work at for a term of 1 year. Sacrifice for your school.

What about Anderson? RR sounded like he thought that they'd both make it. Denard could be a two way player. He'll probably only get a few snaps a game so he wouldn't be too tired to play corner. I don't know if you can move Woolfolk back. Safety is just as bad. Then we'd have to move Brown back to safety.

In all seriousness, I can see Stevie Brown and Brandon Smith moving back to safety, and some of those WR commits move to the other side of the ball.

With next year's WR class... and Rogers at the #6 WR this year... move him back now. NOW!!!! Maybe Vlad is pushed into the starting safety spot, allowing Woolfolk to be a back-up S/CB. But that doesn't do much for our over-all DB depth Has Babb got on the plane yet?

Well, this leaves our 4th CB as a walk-on. If we moved Woolfolk, our 4th S would be a walk-on. We'd have to move Rogers, I guess.

Cam Gordon is probably a Linebacker on D. I don't see this being an issue. RR didn't seem too concerned about Turner. Witty on the other hand seems like he could go either way.

If secondary depth gets any thinner there will be consequences not only on Saturdays, but on the scout team too. It can't help our receivers to go up against walk-ons and each other in practice, only to face Spievey or Chekwa when it counts.

the results of the test Turner had to pass were supposed to come out today or very soon. Him not being at practice today doesn't mean he hasn't qualified, but yeah, if he and Witty both did not qualify we are fucked with a capital F

Simply put if they don't make it we will be screwed in the secondary. Isn't Floyd Simmons still at corner as a walk-on too. If they don't make it our depth chart would be: Warren Cissoko Floyd Simmons(if he is still at corner) Anderson Rogers???Woolfolk??? If we got both of them which I'm really hoping we do it would be this: Warren Cissoko Floyd/Turner Turner/Floyd(don't know who would be the third or fouth) Witty Simmons Anderson That to me leaves some depth issues still but is certainly much better than the first option.

a few different solutions (I mean band aid solutions here) but the only ones that make any degree of sense is moving some of the many WR's to DB. Moving anyone in the DB is not going to work because we are thin at all positions there. As for our WR's, there are only a couple who could make the switch. As I said....this is a band aid solution for a massive laceration with an arterial bleed........we're in some shit!

Seriously. Witty may be Charles Fucking Woodson. I don't know. But there has not been a single practice held since he would have arrived in AA.

FWIW, Sam Webb doesn't think JT Turner will have any trouble making it in. He seems to think it's more of a paperwork issue, whereas Witty is waiting on a test score.
