What Were You Wrong About?

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

No season ever goes as expected, but heading into this one, we each had a boatload of expectations and predictions. Big picture, we probably expected anywhere from 6-6 to 12-0, although the median was likely 8-4 or 7-5. I personally didn't see 10-3 coming. But what other SPECIFIC things were you wrong about this year? I'll start with three:

1. Our kicking game would be a hot mess. I thought we'd be pining for the early years of RichRod. Instead, we got Kenny Allen, Mr. Automatic.

2. Wayne Lyons would be a major part of the defense. He was not.

3. Ty Isaac would emerge as the man. He did not.

I actually was completely correct on the record. I thought we'd go 9-3 and win the bowl game.

However, I was not correct in how exactly that 9-3 would happen. I figured we'd lose to Utah and then one of our rivals, as well as a game we weren't supposed to lose.

Instead, we won all the games we were "supposed" to win, but lost to both rivals. While I certainly would trade the close Indiana win for a loss if it mean flipping the close MSU loss, it is pretty encouraging that it firmly seems as though we are no longer in a stage where we will be losing often to teams much worse than us.

Harbaugh still has to prove he can win the really big games, but step 1 was proving we can handle the bulk of our mediocre to decent opponents easliy and often with dominant authority (BYU, Maryland, Northwestern, Florida). Nice to return to that.

Have a feeling the wins over good rivals will start coming real soon.

I thought that the running game, if not perfect, would at least be the go-to workhorse of the team, with Rudock game-managing and the receivers doing nothing remarkable. I also didn't think the defense would be as good as it was.

I really thought we would beat OSU. In fact, I knew we were going to beat OSU. I figured that after what happened on 10/17, we would be rewarded with a good ole fashion, John Cooper era, ass whooping.

I thought we'd win, at best 8 games, and we'd lose all three rivalry games. I said Morris would beat out Rudock, and Green would start over Smith. This all in July would've been my Prediction. Disregard any predictions I make moving forward, because I was completely wrong.

our RB's would be better, for most of the year they simply weren't very good.

I also thought our receiving core was going to be bad, but they turned out to be good, even very good and reliable.

2 games better than I thought in the win column, wish we had beaten State, thought we could but they turned out better than I thought too.

I also thought we'd beat State, which, yeah. I would have been wrong about more stuff, but I prefer to just let things play out instead of prognosticating. I was pleasantly surprised with the extent of the team's improvement in all 3 phases.

1) Jake Rudock would bomb and we'd finish the season riding Shane Morris

2) We'd finish with 6-7 wins

3) Our offense would be unbelievably and our INT's would double our TD's

4) Ty Isaac/Derrick Green would be our only shining light in our O.

5) I'd rather not go on since I'm only embarrassing myself now...

Before the season I predicted 7-5. I thought that the team would lose some games that they should have won, but win against MSU and OSU. Instead, they took care of business - although they did win some games with much larger margins than predicted (3 game shutout streak, Florida). We were pretty close to losing against Minnesota and Indiana though: losing would have resulted in a 7-5 regular season as predicted with a much weaker narrative. Thankfully we didn't and reached 10 wins.

I thought we would win 7 games, lose a few in embarassing fashion, and that our QB play would be average at best.  Instead, my cheeks are flush with giddiness for the coming years.

I was one of the few to report from the "open" practice (400 students instead of 40000 Harbaugh starved rabid fans-- damn you submarine). I commented on Ruddock looking good and was chastised heavily for not knowing how to spell our heir apparent's name. In my defense there were no names on the jerseys, no rosters, the whole precedent of "Chronicles of Riddick", I'll have the haddock with a baked potato, etc.

which, of course, speaks to Jim's complete mastery of the head coaching position and his ability to recognize and hire many of the best teachers of the game.

I was aware we had recruited some of the highest rated OLmen but the fact that a freshman was able to step in last season and be recognized as our best speaks volumes to how poorly the rest of that unit had been instructed. Drevno was able to get the pass protection drastically improved prior to the start of the season. Due to a couple of our RBs seeming lack of motivation and injuries to a couple of others, the rushing attack was not what I expected. However, the execution the unit showed in the final game of the season vs. probably the second best defense we faced all year proved just how effective Drevno is at his craft and what he accomplished from time he set down in AA through season's end was simply magnificent.

Same is true of every other member of this staff. Producing three AAs where there were none was impressive. The odds of having at least three receivers that will be playing on Sunday were so preposterous such a thought never entered my mind.

I did know Jim was a great get for us, but given the above, together with completing a first season that can only be regarded as exceptional while putting together a freakishly good recruiting class, all at the same time, exceeded any expectations I had and my expectations were very high.
