What Fathers Day Plans, Best/Worst Gifts, and is it OK to Get your Own Gift?

Submitted by xtramelanin on June 18th, 2020 at 9:11 PM

Mates,

Like most I have been busy, but I realized that Fathers Day is nearly upon us.  When you are little you draw your dad a cute picture that is probably indecipherable, or make him a cake with mom and give him some 'dad' gift like handkerchiefs or a shaving kit.  But you get older, maybe even have your own kids, and things change.  Time is more important that 'stuff', but its still nice to get him something - problem is that dads have 'stuff' already so it can be tough to get them something that they might actually need or want.  And if you're a dad, well, maybe its time to indulge yourself with something that you know you want but that the family really doesn't have the know-how to pick out properly.

And if you're a dad, how about getting yourself a gift?  I personally have been coveting a new chain saw for quite some time, and Saturday my 23 yr old Husqvarna died - it could be time to re-up for another saw.

Questions about Fathers Day:

1.  Any Fathers Day plans?

2.  Best/worst Fathers Day gifts you ever gave or got?

3.  Is it okay to get yourself a gift, you know, because you're a dad and its your day?

Happy Fathers Day to all the mgodads, a few days early,

XM

i don't think i ever have bought my self a fathers day gift, but the chainsaw thing has been on my mind.  then my ultra-trusty saw died on saturday in the middle of bucking up a couple of bigger trees.  so, maybe, a new husqvarna in my future....

I loves me some Husqvarna!  My trimmer starts on pull #4, and my leaf blower on #1, consistently.  Even if they've been sitting in the garage all winter.  Just solid.

However, Poulan is owned by Husqvarna, and generally use Husqvarna engines.  It might be worth it to research whichever saw you want, and see if a lower cost might work out for you?  But if you use it a lot (and it seems like you do), its always safer to spend the money for a good quality pro-series machine...

bought the 550 XP with a 20" bar.  was the best power/wgt ratio and the size for our needs.  the 572 is a fine saw but we no longer live in the UP and i just don't fell that many trees in a year to justify the expense.  and i'd use a buddy's regular mill as opposed to my saw, if necessary.

Happy Father's Day XM.

1.  We don't have any plans that I know of except church.

2.  The best Father's Day gift for me is spending time with family.  I don't remember a bad gift.

3.  I don't know if it's ok...but I may have to get a new cell phone because my battery is dying.

God bless you and your family!

I have to work this Sunday

It sucks because it's pretty reasonable to assume that this will be my Dad's last father's day.

I'm actually going thru some therapy with regards to some things I've experienced and the one thing I've learned is no matter how pissed off at my father I am, I love him with my whole heart.

I haven’t spoken to my biological father but once in 20 years.  He can fuck right off to I don’t give a shit where.

My dad tho (step dad technically) .... my dad is the awesomest, most generous person.  He’s been in my life since I was 4 and always treated me like his own.  I am going to try to model “how to be a grandpa” after him once my kids start having kids.  I miss him ... we usually golf every Father’s Day but can’t this year.

Happy Father's Day to you, XM! You seem like an exemplary father, and your family is fortunate to have you.

On Father's Day, I'll go to church with my family and then take my daughter to her softball practice. (My son asked me if I was mad that she had a 2-hour practice on Father's Day. I told him the only thing that bothered me was that it wasn't a 3-hour practice.)

My lovely bride has already promised me a steak dinner. (She is an EXCELLENT cook.) As for gifts, I really don't need any stuff, so my kids got me a subscription to The Athletic last year. It's the perfect Father's Day gift for me -- something that I really enjoy.

Happy Father's Day to all of the MGoDads out there. Since our first child was born, I always thought that being a good parent was the most challenging -- yet most rewarding -- thing I've ever done. It has been a blast.

i reply: if my family saw that sentence they'd say 'oh brother!' accompanied with eye rolls.  we were just reading and discussing Prov 3:11-12 at the dinner table.  i will say they took it well.

Baby’s first birthday today, then my first Father’s Day and our anniversary on the same day. Very eventful few days.

My gift will be standing at the grill, uninterrupted, cooking up some filets and lobster tails.  Will have to draw out the time making the sides.  Just so blessed, I can barely stand it!

XM, what’s your best gift?

congrats on the first fathers day, and glad you are atoning for your missed opportunity to grill lobster tails.  a fine menu line-up, all 5*s.

no 'best' gift that i recollect. just 'time' as many here have said.  i know my time with all the kids home ends very soon, this might be the last one with oldest going into her senior year at college.  trying to enjoy it for the short time we are blessed with these things.

EDIT: i do remember one 'best gift' from a couple of decades ago that we still own and use.  dear wife bought me a maul.  extremely useful in our neck of the woods.

1. No plans really. The wife and kids are still back in Georgia, while I'm out here in Colorado getting the new house in order. I'll probably have a few beers, grill a bit, and work a few hours.

2. Wife and kids got me a new Dewalt Impact Driver this year w/ a 40 piece bit set. Great gift and certainly will come in handy with the new house.

3. I plan on buying myself a nice bone-in 2" ribeye from the local butcher and a 6 pack to enjoy with it. So, yes, I think it's acceptable to get yourself something to enjoy.

Happy early father's day to all the other dads here.

1 - Time, spend time with the 93 year old pops.

2 - Tools are always the best, but my son got me a knife a few years back that I love.

3 - I am thinking of getting myself some sort of spirits that I don't normally drink. Suggestions for something in the fermented corn charred oak barrel category?

logged in just to upvote and comment.  Squeeze on your pops, you're lucky to still have him.  My entire life the past 13 years since my dad passed is like a daily Field of Dreams scene.   Miss the shit out of my dad every single day.

Headed up to Burt tomorrow.  Playing golf with a vendor on the way out of GR in the morning, the boat will be parked on the rocks across from Colonial by 6 pm, hopeful to bang a few walleyes before dark.

The kids are coming up to hang for 3-4 days with us.  Can't wait.

sounds like an outstanding weekend.

dad would be 95 if he was still with us.  he passed 8/16/11.  his last visit was on fathers day, 2011.  that was a story in itself - i got him out of a ticket in my little rural township.  funny.   i also recorded some of his life story as he told it to the kids (with my peppering him with questions). i made copies of that phone/video and sent it to all my siblings for Christmas that year after he'd passed.  he was a very special and talented guy.  i wish he could see all of his grandkids, and that they could see him.

I discovered a new coffee pot in the back of my wife's car while moving the car seat a few days ago. I pretended not to see it but she realized it was there later on so I've been using it the last two mornings and it's been great.

I don't feel like doing much of anything on Sunday so we'll get take out.

I've had 5 of them now, and can't remember a single gift, but my birthday is so close to fathers day that they are generally combined into one gift that I buy myself!

On a side note if anyone wants to gift me a 14or 16hp single cylinder Kohler k-series for my John Deere 314, I'd gladly take it.

One of my daughters invited me a couple days ago to their place for father's day.  I'll probably get up early for church, come home for a light breakfast and more coffee, then head there for the day.

Most memorable father's days were 1) the one about a half-dozen years ago when my 3 kids and granddaughter took me to Binder Park Zoo, and 2) 9 years ago when I spent the entire day with my dad, his last father's day (he passed away 6 months later ---f cancer!)

I hadn't thought until now of gifting myself anything for father's day, thanks for pointing out that loophole, XM!

Goin’ to the old man’s place. I usually go with a restaurant gift card to a place I know the old man likes. I’m a new dad and I told my wife just get me paint supplies and paint so I can paint the bedroom, as my father’s day gift. She’s like IDK what you need to paint, you get that stuff. I’m like me not having to get it is “the gift.”

My family is taking me out for a nice steak downtown San Diego. We will early to walk the harbor and maybe little Italy.

gifts: not sure what they have in store for me. But the true gift is being a dad to my kids.

I’ll call my dad who loves in Michigan. I am sure he will get at least 27 holes in.

happy fathers day to all the dads and father figures out there.

I’m traveling to FL to surprise visit my dad. I’m picking up some Whistlepig 15 year rye whiskey and some beef plate ribs aka dinosaur bones to put in the smoker.
We’ll probably just sit outside by the smoker pretending to know what we’re doing, play chess, drink our rye, and talk.

Impressive your last saw made it 23 yrs. Speaks to your Zen and the Art of Chainsaw Maintenance.

1- None, we've got a 4 yr old and a newborn, so maybe a walk or something

2 - Similar, too young with kids and Dad is 60s and stepdad is 70s. Just starting to reach peak Fathers Day time

3- Of course! Life is short--if something other than quality time has a chance to make you happy and you've got the means, why not?

I'll probably grab a bottle of Ardbeg or if the price is right Laphroig

4yr olds start to draw pictures of dad and give them to you as fathers day cards.  if that happens, i always put the year that i got them and, as is sometimes necessary, the 'interpretation' of the drawing.  something like, 'this is daddy, flying an airplane' or whatever your 4 yr old told you the drawing was.

that saw cut down a lot of trees, especially when we lived in the UP.  a lot.

Happy Father's Day XM and thanks for inspiring us with stories of the time you spend with your kids.

My son turns 2 next week and is already into hiking, so on Sunday we might try out something more ambitious than the hills behind our house. Maybe "7 Trees" at Brand Park in Glendale.

In 1987, at age 12, I bought my Dad tickets to the last Tigers game of the season, just thinking it might be a fun, random game to check out. Turned out to be the high-stakes pennant-or-bust game vs. the Blue Jays. Frank Tanana pitched a shutout and the Tigers won 1-0. Great father-son memory.

This year I bought myself some UM gear from the M-Den special someone posted about (thanks for the tip!) I like all these bourbon/whiskey suggestions, may need to do that, too.

Happy Father's Day to all the MGoDads, and love to all those who have lost their Dads.
