We Are Blimp Worthy Again
The new maize and blue Goodyear blimp Wingfoot three will be here for the Wisconsin game. It will be be flying out of Grosse Ile Airport so the downriver folks should get some good views of the airship.
I remember many Notre Dame home game weekends driving home in the '90's and '00's and seeing the blimp cruising over downtown A2. When was the last time we were blimp worthy? UTL II?

FYI it’s almost impossible. There are only 14 actively flying blimps in the world and the cabins are tiny - only the crew fits in. There are more astronauts than blimp pilots. Washington Post says there are only 17 full time blimp pilots, 13 of whom work for Goodyear.

Impressive Blimp industry knowledge you have bestowed upon us. There are probably only 17 people people alive who would have known this. Are you one of the Blimp pilots? :)

Edit.

Zeppelin rides are available in Germany. And they're pretty cheap!

Are they still using Hydrogen? If so, no thank you. . .

Oh, the huge manatee

Too soon? Nope you're good
October 10th, 2018 at 9:17 AM ^
I'd SO much rather ride in a Zeppelin than a blimp.
Blimps are for pussies!
October 10th, 2018 at 10:42 AM ^
Just make sure you have your ticket at the ready!

This feels like a monopoly. We should probably get the government to look into it.
October 10th, 2018 at 8:03 AM ^
Looks like it is possible to get a blimp ride, although you'd be in very select company:

Thank you for your interest in submitting a request for a ride certificate on the Goodyear Blimp from The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. Each year, the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company receives hundreds of requests for ride certificates for our world-famous Goodyear blimps. The opportunities for charitable ride certificates are very limited because the blimps are often flying to deliver value for Goodyear.

Man....they make it sound like a very dangerous thing to do. I'm guessing probably because it is...

"The opportunities for charitable ride certificates are very limited because the blimps are often flying to deliver value for Goodyear"
Well, I guess we know where Dave Brandon's golden parachute landed?
Right on the Goodyear tarmac.

I remember as a kid in the 90s the blimp would land at the AA airport next to our ball fields and they would let you hop on for a minute if you were lucky (while it was teathered). Good ol' pre 9/11 lack of security.

Coming out of school (in '93) I was reasonably far along the path of interviewing with Goodyear. One thing they told me when I was in Akron for onsite interviews was, "Don't even ask about a ride in the blimp. Blimp rides are by invitation only."
Back then at least, there were some spots for passengers, but very, very few.

We booked a flight on the FujiFilm blimp over the Bay Area 20 some years ago. Not sure if it is still around. As I recall, there were approximately a dozen or so paying passengers on board, which constituted a full load.

MGoBlimp.

I didn't realize the Blimp was still a thing? Are they allowed to fly anywhere near a stadium?
October 10th, 2018 at 8:29 AM ^
No one here said you didn't realize that.

What is wrong with you? Chill bro

All I did was answer his first question. He had a question that needed answering. Good grief, people.

You should take a solo flight in one, with a fire pit.

Did I answer your first question? I hope I did. I was trying to be helpful.

The FAA allows it.

Great post !
"Blimp-worthy" defines the resurgence of Meeeeeeeechigan Football. We are back.

October 10th, 2018 at 7:59 AM ^
I even saw the likes of the Goodyear blimp.
October 10th, 2018 at 8:06 AM ^
What did it read?
October 10th, 2018 at 8:15 AM ^
ICE CUBE'S A PIMP
October 10th, 2018 at 9:23 AM ^
So does that mean Saturday will be a good day?
October 10th, 2018 at 8:58 AM ^
Care to share what it read?
October 10th, 2018 at 8:13 AM ^
It's been years since the GY Blimp was in Ann Arbor. I think we've seen some other lame imitation (like a Sprint one or some company like that), but it will be great to see the "real thing" again. It will add even more to what should be a great atmosphere for the game on Saturday. Can't wait.

I believe it was Fuji that had a different blimp, which has been seen in AA. Surprised they are flying it in from Grosse Ile when usually it is done from the AA Airport.
October 10th, 2018 at 10:36 AM ^
I remember going to the AA airport as a kid to check out the blimp when it was parked there the week before big football games.
Of course, I had an onion tied to my belt, as was the style at the time...
October 10th, 2018 at 8:15 AM ^
There is hardly a more enjoyable-to-say-word in the English language than "blimp".
October 10th, 2018 at 8:43 AM ^
Only thing I can think of is its favorite cousin...the blumpkin.
October 10th, 2018 at 8:49 AM ^
My wife gave me a blumpkin once. Said it was a shitty experience

Even in Ohio

It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girl dies In a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.
October 10th, 2018 at 9:09 AM ^
Was it a good year?
October 10th, 2018 at 9:12 AM ^
No, the worst.
October 10th, 2018 at 9:24 AM ^
I'm surprised Goodyear's colors look suspiciously like Maize and Blue given that it was founded and is still headquartered in Ohio.

Ice Cube's a pimp.
