Visitors (Calling out Magnus)

Submitted by Hoek on October 28th, 2022 at 9:29 AM

Calling out Magnus, what recruits are visiting for the game this weekend? Are they all official visits?

What is the difference between official and un-official? For example if it's un-official can that recruit go into the locker room? meet with the coaches? Try on a uniform and have a picture taken? Go on the field? What can a recruit on a official visit do? Can they have food? Meet with Professors? Who pays for the tickets?

I have always been curious on this topic, now I'm very unmotivated sitting at my desk. Need more MGOBLOG content to read!!!

I respectively suggest that calling on Magnus would have been better phrasing since calling out Magnus sounds like you're challenging him to a duel.

Steve Lorenz of 247 has a good article up on the visitors ($): https://247sports.com/college/michigan/Article/A-thought-on-every-confirmed-recruiting-visitor-this-weekend-196242482/

The vast majority (18) are from the Class of 2024, including 5-stars QB Jadyn Davis, WR Ryan Wingo, DL Justin Scott. 8 visitors are from the class of 2025, including 5-star QB Bryce Underwood. The 2023 visitors are:

Four-star OL Spencer Fano

Four-star OL DJ Chester

Four-star OL Caleb Lomu

Three-star WR/ATH Ryan Mooney

Three-star WR Chance Fitzgerald

I look at maizenbrew, but it is sort of like going to an Applebees instead of a cool local diner.  All the cool kids go to MGoBlog and Touchthebanner.  I don't think Touchthebanner is really competitive with MGoBlog (no offense), but Maizenbrew does seem like a competitor and it is sort of uncool to link to it.   I'm just sayin'.

I kinda agree!  I sniff around maizenbrew every so often, but it always reminds me of a fan's blog.  By that, I mean something generated and curated for general redneck-y fans of sports.  Not something maintained by overtly knowledgeable students of the game curating content for people interested in the details and intricacies of the various games inside sports.  Maybe its like superficial coverage vs detailed analysis?

In any case, I prefer MGoBlog because superficial coverage is for schmucks.

That's a monumentally dumb take. You've been around long enough to know about the "golden age" of Michigan blogs. Just because there is not a "friends of the blog" sidebar anymore doesn't mean MGoBlog "competes" with other Michigan blogs and that it's inappropriate to link to them.

The whole "cool kids" thing is also arrogant and immature. Perhaps you were just being facetious, but it's not as if your fandom is any better than someone else's because you frequent MGB and someone frequents MnB.

How ridiculous.

There's no way to say this without potentially offending the recruits or our coaches but, as a whole, that list is a little less than encouraging. I just don't understand how, following our best season in 20 years, our recruiting got worse?! Is it simply the NIL factor?

While I know some of these kids will prove to be undervalued and our coaches will turn them into blue-chippers, is it really too much to ask to have a couple top-100 prospects be interested in us?

Is it concerning anyone else about the lack of 2023 visitors for this game, and for that fact, for a lot of the home games so far this year? I've got the faith in Jim, but also should we be bracing for a down year in recruiting and looking forward to 2024? That seems to be where the focus lies now.

No.  The 2023 cycle is winding down, most croots will have used up their official visits.  Most are committed somewhere.  Signing day is just around the corner.  You'll get a handful of uncommitted guys, locals who can afford to travel on their own dime and guys who want a better offer but you're not going to get a ton of 2023s here.

Yeah the 2023 cycle is winding down, but UM is still in the mix for some big names.

Jyiare Hill - 4 Star CB who is rumored to be leaning towards UM but Illinois is pushing hard

Kayden McDonald - 4 star DL who I would assume stays in SEC country

Arion Carter - 4 star LB who is committed to Memphis.....

Add in the 3 OT prospects visiting this weekend.

If they hit on Hill, Carter, and one of the OTs that would be great. If Harbor signs thats even better. I wouldnt be surprised if a recruit flips and we sign some who are not even on our radar.

If the team finishes strong again we will do well in the coaching musical chairs period before early signing day.  Guys we've been out of for months and portal targets will pop back up on the board.  Just last year off the top of my head, this is how we got in with Olu (transfer, obviously), Clemons, Moore, Sabb and Gentry, all huge pickups.

My impression is that the staff has narrowed down the remaining recruits for the 2023 class and is just working those guys hard for commits. This fall they have tried to have one or two key guys on campus for certain games. I think they are also looking for some late flips from guys committed elsewhere as they got last year. Looking at you, Notre Dame!

may also be that with (a) some young guys showing out and taking starter snaps this year and (b) a really deeeply talented 2024 class at some positions of need that they are gonna take the best guys they can get in this class and leverage open spots to make next years class bigger

part of it could be numbers the Covid year screwed up scholarships and there might not be a ton of room for a big class.  Especially true with the I line as all the starters save Olu will still have eligibility after this season.  Could see some go to NFL but depending on what they’re gettin in NIL those guys could stay and get another year.  I remember Wisconsin trotting out entire lines of 5 year 23-24 year old seniors.

It wasn't my intention to take clicks away from his site, (forgive me I didn't even know he had a site) however I have went there now, It's also pinned on my computer for the future. I still would like his insight into some of these questions regarding the inner workings of recruits and their visits.

I don’t understand the visitor count concern. I recommend clicking on the visitor link above. We have 5 2023 commits coming, and 3 4* OT prospects at this game. This is in addition to 22 2024 prospects, and 7 2025 prospects. While 37 prospects isn’t a huge number, it isn’t bad. I believe our 2023 class will be small-ish.

As for official vs non-official visits, it is about who pays for travel, food and accommodation expenses. You only get one official (paid) visit per school.
