CONMEBOL would kill us. Sure the level of competition is higher, but the sport would die if we went another generation without qualifying for the World Cup. Plus, the travel would be horrific. And you think the CCL is bad? Imagine MLS teams in the Libertadores.

The solution to this problem is getting the USMNT invited to the Copa America with the same frequency as Mexico.

...the Copa America into the Copa Americas.

The 2015 Copa America could for the first time include the entire American continent, after North American governing body CONCACAF made a formal request to FIFA to be included in the South American tournament.

Under preliminary proposals, six North and Central American teams would join the 10 CONMEBOL members in the cup, which could be renamed the Copa Americas.

CONCACAF head Chuck Blazer confirmed in an interview with Sports Illustrated that the idea had been considered for a long time in the organisation, but that this was the first time it had been officially approved and put forward. The official however also stated that the economic interests of North American sides would also have to be protected.

“Other configurations might lend themselves to being possible,” he said. “Economic parameters would need to be met. The Gold Cup is the main source of revenue to support the youth programs and competitions that we do. If we did [a Copa Americas], we would have to see how it would replace what currently exists.”

To make that happen, the Gold Cup would have to be moved to even numbered (Olympic) years.

According to Argentina website Infobae, there is some discomfort among officials with the quality of play in the current Copa America, which has been widely criticized. This has happened especially after Paraguay reached the final after not having won any games outright. One option is to add more teams and have only two from each group pass to the second round, eliminating the best third-place option.

One of the immediate problems of this plan is that the Gold Cup would have to be moved to even-number years, which would make it coincide with the Summer Olympics.

Another problem is economic, because the U.S. and Mexico would look to have more participation in T.V. rights, marketing, and ticketing, since they would no longer be simply invitees.

The guy is from Germany!  And he is coaching a team from the USA!  I understand that this is not new a phenomenon is sports (US gymnastics comes to mind), but does anyone else find this odd?

I want a guy who bleeds red, white and blue, and understands soccer's place in America!

End rant

Teams regularly have coaches from other countries and backgrounds... Coaches even lead multiple teams to WC births, etc. This is nothing new.

Also juergen lives in Cali, and has been on and off on this job since he coached Germany.

Awesome shit.

I'm all for German vision and assertion.  Klinnsman is the entire package with a hands-on approach.  From what I understand, he'd only take the job if he can control every part of the program.

Apparently Gulati is willing to give him the keys to the entire program.  It's about time IMHE.  This team needs an all encompassing vision.

However, you need elite players to win championships and compete for the World Cup. Until we have guys who can do the following, it wouldn't matter if Jesus was coaching:

First, why is this not OT? This is not a soccer message board, it's a Michigan one. Second, it makes no difference. Soccer is still pathetic, and no one in this country cares. Landon Donovan and his good time Nancy boys are still a non factor. Hopefully we disband the USMNT soon.

It's a Michigan board. I don't go to soccer boards and complain about them talking soccer. If people want to be horribly off topic and talk about a glorified version of kick the can, they should expect the overwhelming majority of us who hate soccer to tell them to GTFO.

...who has repeatedly written about the USMNT and actually deemed the USMNT not-OT (at least during the 2010 WC).

Congrats for hating soccer. You're not alone. Now go find some others who share that opinion and bitch about it there.

You do know Brian is like a mega, mega USMNT fan right? And that he blogs about soccer with some regularity here?

of course you don't because you're a cockbag who strokes his two incher to Boytaur on a regular basis while praying that your cousin-wife never finds out that you lust after four legged man-stallions.
