USC QB to portal, several CBs Caleb Williams to USC
To no surprise.
Caleb Williams IG'd yesterday being at the Rams game in the afternoon, and at the Lakers game at night. This morning USCs projected starting QB entered the transfer portal.
Several crystal ball predictions came out today for Caleb Williams to USC:

United, American, Delta, and Alaska all have hubs at LAX, maybe he just had a long layover. /s
But seriously, if Lincoln Riley can get USC going, I think that's a positive for us if he can lock up West Coast dudes like Chris Olave, Haskell Garrett etc instead of letting them head to OSU or UGA (Bowers).

Yea. Same problem with Texas. Some talent was leaving the state. Dobbins immediately comes to mind, but I know Alabama was able to pick some off too. Waddle I believe is a Texas kid.
Would be nice to make some in-roads with some of the California kids. I think Michigan used be able to pluck a player or two out of from there before. I think Donovan Warren was a 5 star if memory serves.

Teams like OSU and Bama will pull from California even is USC turns around. There is simply too much talent there to lock it all down.
January 10th, 2022 at 9:57 PM ^
Right but if USC pulls a higher proportion of that top tier guys (dudes like Bryce Young, Najee Harris, etc) that will have a leveling effect in that pipeline.
January 10th, 2022 at 10:23 PM ^
As shown with the transfer portal, you always have a second chance.

If Michigan can't get NIL to work, it will be a trickle down effect where OSU, Alabama and such probably get the guys we'd have gotten if USC hadn't got off the ground. The more top tier teams does not make the better for us.
January 10th, 2022 at 9:58 PM ^
Won't competition for Midwest talent become higher if OSU is striking out down south and out west? That is my assumption. Maybe only MSU will suffer under than scenario.
January 11th, 2022 at 9:12 AM ^
Interesting point, so, does NIL potentially bring college football back to being more of a regional sport, with the trend of kids staying closer to home/in their home State?
January 11th, 2022 at 9:39 AM ^
Ahh, the good old days of the mid-2000s when we'd get our teeth kicked in by Ohio State, then get our teeth kicked in by USC in a Rose Bowl that we backed into.
January 10th, 2022 at 8:24 PM ^
Shocker??? LOL!! No...
January 11th, 2022 at 6:35 AM ^
Are you predicting Caleb Williams to Wichita St.?!?
January 10th, 2022 at 8:25 PM ^
USC must be offerering $1 more than EMU.
January 10th, 2022 at 8:33 PM ^
funny
January 10th, 2022 at 8:33 PM ^
Upvoted for the joke, then realized we probably need to do the math because of state income taxes, then realized there's probably an opportunity for good accountants that can deal with college kids.
January 10th, 2022 at 8:25 PM ^
but but but he said Oklahoma was still in play
January 11th, 2022 at 12:17 AM ^
That was before the Dan Gilbert level cringey press release OU put out. Would have shut the door for me if I were him
January 10th, 2022 at 8:28 PM ^
"Dart" is a really good last name for a quarterback though.
January 10th, 2022 at 8:33 PM ^
yeah but "jaxson"
January 10th, 2022 at 11:27 PM ^
Agreed, the S is a bit redundant.
January 11th, 2022 at 10:58 AM ^
What if he's the son of this guy?
January 11th, 2022 at 10:49 AM ^
It is a good name, but nothing beats Chuck Long.
January 10th, 2022 at 9:30 PM ^
Jaxson Dart to OU?
January 10th, 2022 at 9:33 PM ^
Jesus they outbid Eastern Michigan.
CFB is out of control.

I just hate the new College football..I understand and respect those opinions who like it, I get it..it's just so tough to follow when kids can play for a new team each season..we use to equate a name with a school or school with a name..like I say Ron Dayne you say Wiscy monster, NFL bust or I say Charles Woodson, you say UM legend...now I say Caleb Williams, you say QB that followed Oklahomas old coach around...going to take time to get use to

The players get one transfer—and this is the first year of the rule. I wouldn’t imagine every year will have this much QB movement, at least among so many starting QBs. When the grad transfer rule started we saw the game change, but it settled down. Remember: every single kid goes to college to get a job—if a kid wants to be a pro football player, then the portal is there to make their transfers as easy as anyone of us not playing a sport by transferring for our own desires to be more successful than we see our first choice.
OU fans are more impacted by Riley leaving than Williams. The team performance could suffer under Venables and harm CW’s draft evals.
Williams, as example for all student athletes, they shouldn’t have to stay and play for a coach whose program he has no idea about. That’s like asking an astrophysics student to stay at a school he only went to because NGT was there to learn from.

As shown below, they can't play for a new team each season unless they're willing to sit out, which by definition is not "playing for a new team each season." I have friends whose kids have transferred colleges multiple times for various reasons. Why should Caleb Williams have to play for a coach and a system he knows nothing about? Why do coaches get to recruit programs and then up and leave? And why should the players have to stick around in that situation? If you get a new boss at work who you cannot work with or who you think is going to be bad for your career, you leave.

Fore sure this system is better for the players. No doubt.
But why not admit the other side of the coin? It really is not good for the game as a whole.
All sports leagues have to balance the 'fair to the players' vs. 'good for the game' trade-off. And they reach different equilibria. There will always be debate about how to strike the balance. CFB has swung from one extreme to another very suddenly on this balance.
Was the old system (transfer for extenuating circumstances only and no $$) the right balance? Not in my opinion. But that does not mean that the new emerging landscape is ideal either.

It's a big change, for sure. But most players of the caliber of Dayne or Woodson aren't going to transfer. The transfers will almost always be guys who either couldn't quite lock down a starting role, or guys (like Caleb Williams) who were significantly affected by a coaching change. I don't think anybody is too worried about the former transferring to find opportunity, and with the latter, it seems only fair that if a coach can switch schools without penalty, his players can too.
January 10th, 2022 at 10:09 PM ^
Crazy, if Williams goes to USC, it would mean that 3 of the top 12 quarterbacks in the 2021 class passed through USC in less than 2 seasons. Oddly, USC was able to sign both the tenth and twelfth ranked quarterbacks in the class, now the second ranked guy is transferring in.
January 10th, 2022 at 10:34 PM ^
Wild West is west ...and wild.
January 10th, 2022 at 10:34 PM ^
He needs to work on his phone camera focus game.
January 10th, 2022 at 11:23 PM ^
What is stopping schools from signing an unlimited number of players and once they hit the scholarship limit, telling a recruit, “Hey, we want you as a preferred walk on, but talk with this company run by our rich alum. They will give you an NIL deal that will cover tuition room and board, etc. plus an extra $20k per year. Deal?” There’s no need to process players out if scholarships are no longer needed.
January 11th, 2022 at 6:57 AM ^
Nothing. Its already happened at BYU…
January 10th, 2022 at 11:25 PM ^
I'm convinced. Sounds logical to me.
January 11th, 2022 at 10:52 AM ^
USC either gets a 5-star QB with successful starting experience and three years of eligibility left, or they're incredibly screwed at QB.
