USA Today feature on Robinson/Urban Meyer quotes
"Oh, I think he is the best player in the country right now, or one of them," Florida coach Urban Meyer said Monday at his weekly news conference. "I haven't seen everybody play, but I watched that one. That was ridiculous. We recruited him hard, too. We knew he was a dynamic player and a good person."

September 14th, 2010 at 10:23 AM ^
I guess it had to happen to him at least ONCE right??
September 14th, 2010 at 10:06 AM ^
Just because you recruited him hard doesn't mean you recruited him right

on them Indiana nights?

+1 to you sir

Best thing that could have happened to us.

Boy, the meltdown on this board when Beaver decommitted was ridonculous.
September 14th, 2010 at 10:29 AM ^
It was my first post on the board after more than a year of just reading it.
September 14th, 2010 at 10:32 AM ^
on an earlier thread about burning DG's redshirt is not a major concern. There will be other stud QB's recruited. Is there even a remote possibility that every dual-threat stud QB in high school hasn't seen what Denard is doing, and pictured themselves in a winged helmet doing it too? No chance in hell. Indeed there will be more stud QB recruits.
September 14th, 2010 at 10:34 AM ^
People just mourned the loss of a Cox/Beaver backfield combo.
September 14th, 2010 at 10:47 AM ^
I can hear Sean McDonough calling the zone read two ways "and Beaver pulls it away from Cox" or "Cox slips inside of Beaver"
September 14th, 2010 at 12:55 PM ^
But any of Matt Millen's comments would have made me pee in my pants, if only because he would have completely missed the double entendre.
September 14th, 2010 at 10:35 AM ^
It was all your fault, IIRC
LOL
I still remember reading that thread during the Xmas holidays that year. Too funny

and put up the following numbers in 2009
1/3 Passing for 6 yards - 27 rushes for 63 yds (ran for negative yards against New Mexico and ECU)
wonder if he has cable and sees Denard's numbers...
September 14th, 2010 at 12:12 PM ^
pretty evident to me that he was not confident in his ability to earn playing time. Seeing Denard's numbers would probably do nothing for him except reinforce his opinion that he made the right choice.

Meyer may have recruited Denard hard, but when he said he couldn't compete for the QB job, he didn't recruit Denard's heart hard enough.
Funny how the "win at all costs" coach with the "lack of family values" won over a player who may turn out to be one of the best in school and even NCAA history by telling a 17 year-old kid that, yes, he would give him the opportunity to pursue his dream of being a QB at a major college. Also funny how the coach who "does it the right way" stood in the way of that 17 year-old's dream.
I guess it has worked out fine, though. I hope Meyer thinks of Denard every time he sees Brantley struggle. He has imitated RR once; maybe he will imitate him again the next time a kid like Denard tells him he wants to compete for the job at QB instead of being a CB or WR.
September 14th, 2010 at 10:10 AM ^
hopefully he doesn't learn his lesson and we continue to steal amazing QB's out of their backyard.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:47 PM ^
came down to needs rather than "stood in the way" of a kid's dream. I suspect UF thought Denard was a better fit for a position where they needed help, and had the luxury of telling him that, whereas RR had needs everywhere for a skill guy like Robinson, including QB. At the time, if I remember correctly, UF had Cam Newton on the roster waiting behind Tebow and Brantley in the fold already.
I happen to think Brantley will be fine. We may look back in 3 years and say "I bet Urban Meyer wishes he'd had Denard running the show," but it's premature at this point.

Tater;
I not an fan of Urban, but would you have preferred he “not have stood in the way,” of Denard and told him he’d be a QB when he had all the intentions of recruiting him for a different position? I would applaud him for not selling him on false pretenses just so he’d commit and being up front with him so he could make his own decisions. Urban felt he’d be more successful in his system as a CB and RR felt he’d be more successful as a QB. The onus was on Denard to make the right choice and thus far his choice has paid off.

I thought I found the link to this article from here, but I guess I stumbled across it another way... anyway, with that said:
Holy fuck I hate Urban Meyer with the burning of a thousand suns. Herp derp derp we recruited him derp derp. Good job on leaving out the part about recruiting him as a defensive back, jackass.
September 14th, 2010 at 10:20 AM ^
Yes, Urban recruited him hard... for CB.
Yes, RichRod recruited him hard... for QB.
But some in the media (and every Sparty/Buckeye) claim that RichRod "has it easy" with his 1-show-pony and lucked out.
Looks to me like you have to know where a recruit's talents best fit his, and your, agenda.
Rich Rod: "Hey, Denard, do you want to come to Michigan and star in the offense I invented"
Denard: "Yes, sir. My family values, work ethic, and athletic abilities will hopefully help improve your offense (which may I add, you invented) and revitalize Michigan. I'm all in!"
Media, Sparty Bob, and some jerk in a Scarlet Hat and suspenders: "Dick Rod sucks, he so lucked out with this gimmic shit. George Perles and Bruce Earl invented the triple-option bubble screen."
September 14th, 2010 at 1:44 PM ^
There are also those who thought Rich Rod "had it easy" with Pat White at the helm. A coach who routinely "has it easy" is either the luckiest coach in the history of organized sports or, more likley, is a very, very good coach.

Woke up and grabbed some coffee on the way to the brewery and saw Denard's dreads on the cover of the USA Today....whistled out the door. That boy made my morning again. Gas station coffee tasting GOOD.

Referencing college football's most prestigious quarterback and running back awards on a conference call Monday, CBS Sports' Verne Lundquist quipped: "He might become the first guy to win both the Davey O'Brien and the Doak Walker."

Heisman.

I still don't like Urban Meyer
September 14th, 2010 at 10:29 AM ^
You have to give Rich Rod credit. He never wavered in the belief that Denard could and should be a quarterback. Go back to the recruiting services and Denard is listed as an "athelete", which means "not a quarterback in college".

Nice to see some more Yooper representation 'round these parts. I'm from Pickford!
September 14th, 2010 at 12:03 PM ^
rich did the same thing with pat white. other schools (LSU) were recruiting him as an athlete (CB?) and rich got him to wvu saying he could play qb.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:29 PM ^
troy smith and pat white beg to differ.
September 14th, 2010 at 10:31 AM ^
they got Tebow over us. It's our turn with Denard.

...Nicole Auerbach of the Michigan Daily. She also recently had a "special to" piece on SI.com. Good for her!
September 14th, 2010 at 10:46 AM ^
whether Meyer kicks himself when he thinks of the backfield he missed: RS Fresh Robinson and Demps. Would've been scary.
September 14th, 2010 at 10:57 AM ^
God told Urban Meyer to play Denard at CB
September 14th, 2010 at 11:09 AM ^
Urban got the short end of the stick for being a dream-crushing douchebag. He already had 10 150 recruits rated ahead of DNard. He used up all his Verizon minutes to illegally contact recruits and lost interest in a greath athlete.. thanks urban! You missed out on a gem.. Denards speed is like fucking put Chris Rainey at QB for Whorida.. that northern weather makes dilithium more rapid , thus lightning speed.. GO BLUE
September 14th, 2010 at 12:39 PM ^
that northern weather makes dilithium more rapid , thus lightning speed
Actually, I think Michigan Football may have inadvertently discovered cold fusion.
September 14th, 2010 at 1:36 PM ^
I also can't stand Urban Meyer, but its worth noting that he spent Denard's senior year of HS with Tim Tebow at QB, not Nick Sheridan.
I love you, Nick, you're a Michigan Man.
September 14th, 2010 at 2:47 PM ^
Sheridan is the reason we have the Brown Jug in Ann Arbor right now
September 16th, 2010 at 8:27 AM ^
but I'm pretty sure Tim Brewster's ability to suck at coaching helped.
