UPDATE: Saban suspends OL indefinitely for DUI

Submitted by ska4punkkid on

Alabama starting OL Alphonse Taylor was arrested on a DUI charge Sunday. Started all 15 games last year for Saban and was named a preseason 2nd team All-SEC pick last week.

With Saban's record though, I'm sure there is no doubt Alphonse will play in the opener against USC. Can't wait till Paul Finebaum asks him about this...

UPDATE: ESPN is reporting that Saban has suspended Taylor indefinitely following his arrest.

As of the last update, Alabama is still just the third-highest SEC team in the Fulmer Cup standings, at least among participants still eligible, with Georgia and Auburn ahead of them. It's pretty clear that Alabama is going to make a late run here but they definitely have some work to do yet. Colorado is still the comfortable overall leader as of the last update, although by percentage the SEC is in the lead for offenses committed as a conference.

this is why you should open your season with a cupcake and why I don't like opening with ND in two years. Summer is too long, too many chances to get in trouble.

that should make it a little easier to stay out of trouble.  I personally think that's a good thing.  Yes, it shortens your "at home" time, but it also extends the amount of time you have with people who share similar goals for the short and long term.

I have a hunch that this will be a pretty focused team with ND to start the season.  Only way I'd be concerned is if a couple national titles have the boys feeling a bit immortal.  I'll take that concern.

Not saying it was pre-planned, but it's kind of like Harbaugh trying to set up satellite camps in AL without permission from the sovereign leader for that U.S. territory. Fuck the rules. I was duly elected to run this state and I'll decide what does and does not happen here. I don't think an emergency meeting of the legislature was needed, but then again I don't live there. I believe Paul would make the sacrifice. Even though he was born in TN, it's clear he has adapted Bama as his home state and nobody crosses The Man there.

You just watch. If Collins does decide to commit to MI, Saban will have his passport terminated, not allowing him to leave the territory. Certain things you do and don't do in CFB. At the top of the list is forget who the hell runs the game and establishes the rules.

Saban's news conference today:

See, the first two didn't count because they were arrested in Lousianna and clearly there was a rivalry issue...blah, blah, blah...won't be suspended and will be handeled internally.

Now, this past weekend, that was simply an issue of a rivalry, see? That must have been an Auburn fan police cop who pulled him over in...Tuscaloosa. Crap.

He's suspended for the first drive against USC.  By the way, when we win the coin toss, we will be going on defense first and that is officially the first drive.

Their local media doesn't give a flying fuck so this won't be analyzed very much.  Most local medias try and protect their team by going silent and doing next to no reporting on the issue. They won't do anything to actively hurt them.

Anyone with half a brain could do a little investigating and see all the violations -a media that sabotages a local team is rare.

Not sure if serious, but if you are, Graham Glasgow. If memory serves, I'm pretty sure he was a repeat offender too.

Glass house, my friend. Every team, from Alabama on down to Purdue, has its share of guys who will make bonehead decisions. The difference will lie in whether or not you have a coaching staff who will actually hold these guys accountable for their actions.

So let me see if I read that correctly ...

MICHIGAN needs a softer OOC schedule - esp for games 1 & 2 - so that the impact of any players getting in trouble during the off-season/summer and being suspended is lessened?

Did I really read that on a MICHIGAN board?

You'll see him take the field against USC. You can take that one to the bank.

Winning buys you a lot of things. Not having to give a shit about what the media or general public might say when they get up on their moral/ethical high horse is one of them.

Now, if this kid was a repeat offender, that might force Saban's hand, but for a first-time offense like this (and, thankfully, he didn't injure/kill anyone), Saban can get away with basically saying "do you want to suspend him, or do you want to win?" At that point, with the threat of losing a game and a shot at another title at the forefront, most everyone shuts their mouth and goes about their business. "Well, Saban knows what's best for his team," or the more popular "As long as Saban wins, and his players aren't murdering anyone, then I don't care." That line of thinking occurs at many places outside of Tuscaloosa, and I'd bet my bottom dollar there are folks on this board who'd say the same thing about Harbaugh and his team.

I'm not saying its right, but again, winning buys you a lotttt of leniency with the masses when, if you were a perennial loser, everyone is looking for any excuse they can find to get your ass run out of town.

Glass houses...there's still way too much time between now and fall camp for one of our guys to fuck up.

And right now is always the WORST part of the summer, where there's nothing on TV, it's hot as balls in most of the country, any summer job is now just boring, and you want to squeeze the last little bit of "fun" out before school starts.

I'm not celebrating ANYONE's misfortune.
