U-M voluntarily disconnects internet to address security concern (not-OT?)

[This may be walking a fine OT line but seems relevant, given “the University of Michigan” and all]

Apparently, U-M’s “Information Assurance” (i.e., cybersecurity) team found sufficiently concerning and credible threats to its network on Sunday that it quickly took the whole thing offline that day. Some critical services (canvas, zoom, dropbox, adobe cloud, etc.) have returned but the rest remain disconnected to give the team its best chance to quickly address the issue.

Hacking? Reminds me of a story:

C.J. Stroud: "Cough, cough [smile on his face]."

Coach Ryan Day: "That's quite a hacking cough you've got, C.J."

Stroud: "Yeah, Coach Day. Some of the other players have it. I don't know about the Michigan game."

Day: "Well, you and the others will just have to pull through. We have to carry on the values Coach Meyer passed on to us."

unrelated but has anyone seen if the scoreboards have been 100% completed? Last week when i saw it they still needed to be filled in along the edges. I've had this irrational fear that they wont be completed in time

Alejandro Zuniga of 247 has been giving weekly updates on the progress but his last one still shows as you said, incomplete on the sides. I trust that’s the easiest part to finish up though and may be just held off as they finished accessing the electronics and such.

I was at Michigan Stadium late last week for a couple prep football games. They had a still graphic on both main screens and only were using the bottom for scoreboard basics (clock, down & distance, and [of course] the game score).  Construction cranes were active on both ends and a lot of workmen climbing on and inside the structures.

Not as of yesterday afternoon.  We drove by there on Stadium Blvd. around 3:30 and there was a big crane, and a bunch of workmen on top of the south scoreboard.  It looked like the outside covering with the large block M was pretty much done.  But I'd guess the boards will be functional one way or the other.

I know of a few large companies that also had no phone/internet service yesterday... maybe there was a major IT vulnerability discovered yesterday?

Michigan should suspend Harbaugh for another game just to be safe.  Maybe a self imposed death penalty to really make sure the NCAA can't come after them. That will show em!

What I think is most relevant about this is that you can't sign into the UM athletics app, so you can't download your tickets to your phone (I can't at least). Hopefully it's all resolved by Saturday.

Looks like it may be a cyber security issue ( only thing that makes sense) and it may not be fixed soon. Ironically US News Report rated UM undergrad cyber security as on of the top programs in the country.

Had some goofy things happen on the Delta Airline site earlier today.

I feel for our new students who are generally clueless about how the campus works. Everything is fine!
