Interesting point, the Board of Regents had their meeting earlier this month in New York City. Very well could have been to have the final deliberation in private and out of the spotlight in Ann Arbor.......or was it to meet with a candidate in NYC?
Come on....I'm trying to provoke someone into saying Bollinger!
January 23rd, 2014 at 7:07 PM ^
Usually the regents hold one "Meeting" in a city with a high volume of alumni for $$ purposes. They do not discuss much at this meeting; it's really more for fundraising.
January 23rd, 2014 at 8:49 PM ^
I'm not sure I'd want Bollinger. Yeah, he invited the students to his house after the '97 PSU game. But he was the Nick Saban of university presidents, always looking for another job.
January 23rd, 2014 at 9:34 PM ^
He went after two jobs, Columbia (which is his alma mater) and Harvard (which is Harvard). I have a hard time blaming him for either.

My fellow Americans. As a young boy, I dreamed of being a baseball; but tonight I say, we must move forward, not backward; upward, not forward; and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom!

I would be careful what you wish for. A president who hates Brandon might simply hate athletics, like Duderstadt did.
January 23rd, 2014 at 4:59 PM ^
Duderstadt gave all of us Michigan engineering graduates who love U-M sports a bad name.
January 23rd, 2014 at 5:28 PM ^
You can like sports and not like Brandon.
Maybe the new president will be someone who just might not like someone who raises ticket prices so he can fly first class to NYC (where he and his staff ride around in limos), fly skywriting planes and fly empty chartered planes to throw off media reports during coaching searches.
Or one who flagerantly disregards city code when he builds his big and loud marquee on Stadium Boulevard.
David Brandon simply does not belong anywhere near a public university. His presence here is fundamentally offensive.
January 23rd, 2014 at 7:44 PM ^
Media reports have been known to negatively impact coaching searches, especially when you're courting candidates who are already employed in a similar capacity.
January 23rd, 2014 at 8:27 PM ^
But isn't it irresponsible - fiscally and socially - to send chartered jets around the sky for purposes other than transportation? He talks about this like it's no big deal. It's a very elitist, self-centered view of the world. That will always turn people off.
January 24th, 2014 at 8:50 AM ^
He was doing his job. The money spent on those planes was a drop in the bucket when compared to the salaries involved. Having a hire fall through because of a meeting getting leaked is a big deal, potentially much more expensive. Maybe it wasn't completely necessary, but it wasn't frivolous either. You might give Brandon a little credit for learning from the history of coaching searches.
You would prefer to criticize him for flying first class. That comes off as extremely petty and lacking in perspective. I guarantee that hiring a president who thinks that way would be very bad for Michigan sports fans. Trying to avoid conflicts is one thing (such as the sign at Crisler). A focus on cutting expenses by nickel and diming the AD is quite another.
January 23rd, 2014 at 11:03 PM ^
You don't have to hate athletics to hate Brandon. I love athletics.
I like my odds.

Huh?!?
I'd happily take Brandon on that Board of Regents, over most of the current occupants...
January 23rd, 2014 at 11:04 PM ^
I accept! Put Brandon back on the Regents (have to be appointed somehow, couldn't get voted back) and out of his current office! Yes! Thanks!

Vote for Pedro!

Agree. I'd guess that whether or not potential presidents would be a friend of Brandon is a key item for many who wield influence on this decision. He's a divisive figure and it's hard to see that ever changing.
January 23rd, 2014 at 11:07 PM ^
I agree, but even sooner. Even under a President that likes him, DB would never stay till 2017. I am thinking DB will not see 2015. To paraphrase Nema above....he does not belong anywhere near a public university.
January 23rd, 2014 at 4:51 PM ^
i wasn't going to tell you guys, but it's me.
January 23rd, 2014 at 4:53 PM ^
I had heard they had honed in on someone but weren't anywhere near closing the deal. Something must have changed in the last week. Dying to see.

January 23rd, 2014 at 5:37 PM ^
You'd have to be a serious higher ed nerd/professor/administrator to not have to immediately scramble to google to figure out details beyond whatever post the person currently holds.
I hope to be said nerd and scramble to google immediately.
Anyone dare to throw down some serious names (Beyond cartoon characters and Brandon)? I'm putting my money on one of three:
a) My hopeful: Earl Lewis, President of Mellon Foundation, prior Provost at Emory
b) My most likely: Phyllis Chin from Illinois
c) My darkhorse: Lou Anna Simon from State
January 23rd, 2014 at 7:15 PM ^
You could add College of Engineering Dean David Munson.
From what I hear it's most likely him or Phyllis Wise (Not Chin), who is Chancellor of Illinois-Urbana Champaign. She has her phD from Michigan and it would be a promotion because she would be president of the whole system as opposed to one campus, plus Michigan is a more prestigous gig than Illinois.
Then again, who knows?

Great guy.
Very energetic.
Superb Dean.
Never gonna happen (Prez). I feel very much like Brian Cook right now; "There is a zero point zero chance..." lol.
January 23rd, 2014 at 9:54 PM ^
The regents have been very quiet, so it's really all speculation, but there is a significant (nonzero) chance they decide to promote from within, and if they do, it seems like Munson is the guy.
January 23rd, 2014 at 10:52 PM ^
I saw Dean Munson just this morning. He was coming into Lurie from the parking lot at 10:30am ... a little late to be showing up to work, unless you had special meetings on Central Campus during the morning?

January 23rd, 2014 at 5:18 PM ^
I'm with you Bando. Feels like a few weeks ago with the whole Borges/Who Will Replace?/Nussmeier thing except this won't get a fraction of the coverage and likely won't get the literal minute by minute leaks that led to the disclosure mere hours after the position opened.
Probably have to wait until the morning although for the Board of Regents to be meeting, its done, this is just to formalize so it could leak. Regents decide everything before the meetings actually happen so whomever it is, its done.

I mean, I meant it as more of a joke, so...
The Dude's keeping an eye on you.
January 23rd, 2014 at 5:28 PM ^
I was a student in the Dude era and had to "go before the Dude" for something a group I was involved with did. Ended peacefully but I've seen that look.
January 23rd, 2014 at 6:39 PM ^
I took a class with the Dude last semester. He asked us to research and suggest some names for the next prez, and he said he'd pass along the good ones. Interested to see who came out on top.
