Thursday Football Open Thread

Submitted by maizeonblueaction on

Even though we do not play until Saturday, there finally is some actual football going on. Big games are South Carolina v. UNC, and USC v. Hawaii. In B1G action, Indiana plays Indiana State, and Minnesota plays UNLV.

So I'm watching the battle of the Carolinas and my dad walks in and says, "are they talking about superman yet?  what color cape is he wearing?"  [This after both of us spent the afternoon nauseated at all the Clowney-mania on ESPN... My dad has a pretty good sense of humor.]

Best case scenario: UNC pulls out the upset W and Clowney still blow some poor kid up and gives ESPN someting new to talk about.  It looks like that first part ain't happenin'..

Well, this match between the Carolinas might get out of hand, now that the Gamecocks have established that they can get first downs even on dumpoff passes and then score on the very next play. No need for them to go to the edge...it's not like anyone with "NC" on the helmet is up the middle on most plays.

So, let's peruse the box score after one quarter, fellow MGoBloggers...

Yards on offense - South Carolina: 203, North Carolina: 35

Lord this is bad.  I haven't been watching the whole time but pretty much whenever SC has scored (and the plays preceding).  UNC sucks.  SC is a good SEC team and all, but UNC is not ready.

I'm not quite ready to exclaim College Football is here, because UNC looks like a highschool team.  Okay I'm done Tar Heel bashing for now.

So happy to see "college football open thread" again. This is so great. Lots of games tonight, too.

Know how I know that Jadaveon Clowney is really good or has a cooling system in his pads? Because the announcers have said it EIGHT GAJILLION FUCKING TIMES. Call the damn game, not try to boost some overrated defensive end's Heisman campaign

Our fathers, who art on the gridiron
Hallowed be thy game
Thy kickoff come, thy will be done
In the game as it is in practice
Give us this play our desired yardage
And forgive us our neutral zone infractions, as we forgive those who commit penalties against us
And lead us not into a trap game, but deliver us from the pain of defeat at the hands of our rival
For thine is the zone, the power-I, and the counter forever
Amen

Football's back y'all!

But Brandon Graham just sacked Matt Simms (in for the Jets because no one else is healthy) for a safety in the Jets' very first series.  And this after Simms was sacked by someone else as Graham was pushing one of his OL out of the way.

Good to see when the new coaching staff changed his position.
