Thoughts on retaining Nuss

Submitted by tjl7386 on

So I have seen in various reports now that Coach Nuss would like to stay on at Michigan and help re-build this team to what he believes it should be. Just was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on this? Would people be up in arms if he was kept on or is that something we would be open to.

I don't know nearly as much as some on this site when it comes to watching the tape and whether last years offense was bad becuase of poor exucution and talent missing at certain posititions or if it just really poor coaching. I just don't see how he could have been so sucessful at Bama and then come here and look that poorly. Would seem to me that there had to be other factors as to why we looked so poorly on that side of the ball.

I would like to see Nuss back. He was not in the best of situations to succeed. Coach Hoke knew what he would have as a offense and knew who his qb would be. Seriously though it wouldn't have made any difference who the qb coach would have been Devin was not a good idea to play qb after high school. And with Brandon supposedly in on all the game planning. His involvement in everything not good.

Clean house. The offense was a complete joke this year and anyone associated with the failed Hoke regime deserves to be gone.

from many posters despite heading an offensive unit in 2014 that had me longing for the days of Borges. Fuck that. Clean the house from top to bottom.

JH tentative staff, based on info/knowledge/rumors, may look something like:

Offensive line coach - Andy Moeller (Cleveland Browns OL)

Defense - Mattison (has ties with Harbaugh family and worked with both dad and brother)

RB coach - Tyrone Wheatley (RB coach at Buffalo Bills)

Offensive Coordinator - Greg Roman (SF OC), Nuss maybe....not sure who else JH would reach for

QB Coach - I would hire Urban Meyer from OSU he works wonders with 1st, second and even third string!  : )

we got Nuss, but after a season of watching him call games, I'm less than impressed. I think he did improve our run game, and that would only continue to get better under him, but it was really frustrating to see him never throw the deep ball, even when safties were completely sold on the run. The few times he was willing to throw the deep ball, it seemed to work very successfully.

I truly believe Nuss is the backup plan. I believe he was told when he was hired that Hoke might be out and they would chase Jim if so, but he would get a year as a interim coach if they couldn't land Harbuagh or Miles.

I don't like it. That's just my gut and has been since he was hired. I thought it was a bit odd to hire on and leave a championship program to go somewhere where the HC is possibly on his way out. I think if Jim don't come home and Miles can't get done (I don't think Stoops is a real candidate) then I think Nuss gets a year to see what he can do.

I didn't really like the offense this year but much of it centered around execution. The play calling wasn't grab-you-by-the-throat-and-squeeze, but Devin really wasn't capable of pulling off an offense like that.

is something my husband still believes, too. I sure hope there are a lot of names on the list ahead of him if JH says no. I think it would be another year or two of nothing special, followed by yet another tormenting coach search, all during which the stadium bleeds out more fans and recruits bolt in other directions.

Not no, hell no.

With largely the same personnel and an improving O-line, we took a step backwards.

I went everyone gone, including Fred Jackson, Funk, etc.

Mattison would be the only person I might give pause to, but even then, I thought he didn't adjust terribly well in the second half. Maybe Mattison could stay.....maybe.

A quick scan of the Big Ten stats.
13th in scoring offense
13th in total offense
7th in rushing offense
11th in passing offense
10th in passing efficiency
9th in sacks against
11th in 4th down conversion
But hey, 7th in all important Time of Possession
I'm not sure what he has done to retain a position on this staff. I think a lot of coaches could have achieved that or better with our personnel

This is where I'm at.  Nuss just didn't seem to do anything that showed him to be the elite level that the program is gunning for with Harbaugh.  Perhaps the payoff of his true abilitites as an OC would bear fruit year two of a team working with his system, and maybe with Hoke gone he would be able to call games more creatively, but I didn't see that evidence so far.

Maybe 1 year wasn't enough to judge Nussmeier's full impact on the offense. There was a lot to fix. That being said, at least one backup QB should have been functional to come in when Gardner was getting beat up.  There wasn't. Not a single guy could come in and keep things moving forward (or even "not backward") for a few downs.

When I compare that to the endless pipeline of champion-class QBs Urban Meyer and Tom Herman have churned out the past couple years, I lean toward showing Nuss the door. I'm not sure Harbaugh, it "it happens", would want him.

I hate to think anything good about the Buckeyes or Meyer, but these kids they keep marching out to glorious victory are damn impressive.  We need someone who can make that happen here.

He was with Michigan for 8 months - and was able to work with our players for about 5 of those months. In our society of instant gratification, we expect him to reach his potential instantly. But it takes longer than that to coach what was by all means a young offense. And frankly, Gardner handcuffed him as well.

I'm a big advocate for continuity. If our new coach believes in him and share his own philosophies too, then why not?

I think maybe making him the QB coach would be a great use of his talents and experience. I thought his play calling was less predictable than Borges but I didn't see any player progression through a season that would indicate he should keep his OC coordinator job. I also think Shane, Speight, Malzone are more of his style than Devin. Call my crazy but I think any of those three could turn into great players if we could develop them decently.

Ultimately the new coach has to decide. Perhaps Nuss gets a trial under the new coach, then can cut ties based on assessment. The transition to a new coach should happen with minimalizing as many bumps. Personally I feel its better to hit reset and put a strong cohesive foundation in place. The new coach will do it methodically his way and setup for success. We need a true QB whisperer :)

Whoever our next HC is will know what to do better than I will. If they want Nuss to stick around, that's fine by me. I look at what he accomplished at Alabama and have to believe he can create success for us as well. But if the new guy wants a clean slate of coaches, that's fine by me too.

I do wonder how much Nuss and Mattison were hampered by Hoke. Both of those guys are proven coaches, so I wonder if bringing in a new HC and keeping them on would bring better results. Who knows?

I'd like to keep him. He didn't become a bad coach overnight, and there clearly were off-the-field problems with this team that were outside Nuss's control. With another year (and a competent OL coach), he can make our offense strong.

Nuss is my #3 choice for OC. #1 is Stitt (probably off the board). #2 is whoever Harbaugh wants (since he's obviously the next coach). But if Stitt is in fact unavailable, and for whatever reason Harbaugh can't get his #1 guy (availability, money, w/e), yeah, keep Nuss. I can't imagine there are many guys who're more successful OCs who're also available. Plus, Nuss minimizes transition costs, both from an on-field perspective and a recruiting perspective.

not with Michigan. If it's determined they are the best candidate then keep them. Someone posted here, or maybe Sam Webb said it, that all the Michigan coaches are quality but they were not good together. It seems like it was a group of nice guys and there was no one to really motivate the players which obviously JH brings to the table.

In the case of Nuss, he proved he didn't have any more answers for the problems of the last two years than Borges but maybe with a different head coach it would work better. The thing is he supposedly left Alabama because he wanted more control than he had with Saban. I'm not sure if JH doesn't beat even Saban in the intensity department.

This past season was more about this teams all around dysfunction than Nuss's poor play calling. I was scratching my head at times with the play calling, but I alsl understand, play calling was the least of our problems. I firmly believe our team wouldnt have been any different even with the best OC in the nation. That being said, I would prefer a different OC, but I would have no problem with him being retained if the new HC chose to do so.

I know the offense took a step back this year, but I'm inclined to give Nuss the benefit of the doubt. He's been successful everywhere else he's been, and we were just a complete clusterfuck last year. He's had a lot of success with QBs and god knows we'll need improved qb play going forward. That being said, if the next coach (please god, be harbaugh) wants to bring in his own guy, I'm cool with that too

That is known for being adaptable with time. I don't care what kind of offense he runs, as long as it is the offense that works with the recruits that we are able to get. I'm ready for someone who knows how to run a solid 2-minute drill, and preferably someone who runs a no huddle.

I would be in favor of Nussmeier staying on. I think a one year sample of his work isn't a good indicator. The O-line improved but the issues with our O are legion. With a competent HC overseeing the team, I think many of our issues would be corrected.

BIGBLUEWORLD

or if our coach is Jim Harbaugh, I expect he'll evaluate Nussmeier and make the right decision.

I'm actually more in favor of retaining Roy Manning, as linebacker coach, than anyone else.

I appreciate that Greg Mattison has done a lot of good for this team, but I think his best times are past.

Magnus

I don't see any problem with keeping Nussmeier on, provided that the new coach doesn't have a right-hand man who has a symbiotic relationship. For example, Rich Rodriguez/Calvin Magee work well together. I wasn't 100% happy with the play calling in 2014, but nobody is ever 100% happy with anyone's play calling.

BleedsBlue

The Ohio State game was easily his playcalling effort of the season. Year two in the system for a returning o-line and two of the three possible qbs have a year of watching and learning under their belt. Things still do take time believe it or not, having a competent/badass head coach will probably help. That way he can concentrate on playcalling and not have to worry about calling timeouts cause the coach isn't wearing a headset and apparently can't see the scoreboard.

I am not sold on Nuss one way or the oher. I do think that regardless of our next head coach, it will help to have as many head-coaches-in-waiting as possible on the next staff. Ultimately it will be Harbaugh's call. Harbaugh.

I haven't been able to confirm much since my source was outted with the last regime. But I can confirm that Nuss wants to stay. It was always believed that if anyone's job was safe under Brandon's regime it was Nuss. I mentioned this to Brian around the Minnesota game that Nuss has pretty much garnered everyone's respect as a coach and even more as a teacher.

Exactly what do people see in Nussmeier?  He is young?  Fuck that the guy sucks as an OC.  He made both Gardner and Morris regress. His play calling is TERRIBLY unimaginative.  He has no fucking clue how to use TEMPO.

Nussmeier is the worst OC in the history of Michigan football.  If he was in any other package....like say...a fat 55 year old all of you would be wanting his ass out of AA.

I hope his ass is already on a bus somewhere South of AA.   He is HORRIBLE and was the primary reason for the 5-7 season.

Magnus

He was pretty darn good at Washington and Alabama. And I'm not sure that Morris and Gardner regressed as much as some people think - Michigan didn't have a single go-to receiver this year (Funchess was a flop), nor did they have a reliable guy in the slot like Drew Dileo. Meanwhile, the running game did improve from 3.3 yards/carry to 4.6 yards/carry, which is a jump from #115 to #47 in the country.
