Tedford Out at CAL
Glad we didn't hire him.
November 20th, 2012 at 2:38 PM ^
Auburn's hiring. I'd say Tennessee, but i think they're holding out for Lane Kiffin.

Jon Gruden!?
/s
November 20th, 2012 at 2:45 PM ^
I can see Gruden sittin back in his lounger, being entertained by a slew of Auburn and Tennessee SEC "Hostesses" and a couple of Cal-Berkely hippies.... decisions, decisions.

As far as the annual pipe dream coaches go, I gather that Cal's first call will go to Chris Petersen.
November 20th, 2012 at 3:04 PM ^
It wouldn't be a coaching search if fans didn't bring up Chris Peterson and Jon Gruden.
November 20th, 2012 at 3:26 PM ^
...and yes, that's the name blowing up my facebook/twitter feeds.
I've already bet several people rounds of drinks that it won't happen.
November 20th, 2012 at 7:36 PM ^
the only two coaching jobs that Chris Peterson would take a real serious consideration are Oregon and Cal. He may have to wait until the season is over for Oregon job because Chip Kelly is almost as good as gone to the NFL.
November 20th, 2012 at 2:45 PM ^
Cal is an AAU member, has a terrible football team, and is located outside the B1G footprint in a major media market. An obvious target for expansion.
November 20th, 2012 at 3:35 PM ^
Also most people don't care about Cal football.
- Cal alum
November 20th, 2012 at 3:48 PM ^
The saddest part of this is that I'd rather have Cal than Maryland or Rutgers. It's actually a good undergraduate university.
November 20th, 2012 at 5:22 PM ^
as much as anyone, but refering to Berkely as a "good undergraduate university" is breaking new ground even for us.
November 20th, 2012 at 6:07 PM ^
Caltech is a pretty decent school for engineering. I guess.
Cal? Meh, nothing compared to the likes of MSU and Iowa. They just don't fit academically.
November 20th, 2012 at 3:56 PM ^
The SF Bay Area is the #4 media market in the USA. Cal won't deliver that market, any more than Rutgers will deliver the NY market, but much as with Rutgers/NY, there are a boatload of Big Ten alums in the Bay Area who could help deliver some fraction of it. Cal's athletic department is deeply in the red, much as Maryland's is, and they'd love a chance to increase those revenues. Amazingly, going after Cal looks like it makes every bit as much sense as going after Rutgers and Maryland did!

I can't believe Petrino hasn't been rehired yet. Literally. He has no probation, committed no NCAA violation, and is one of the best college coaches in the country. I look at the coaches schools picked over him last year and roflmao. Somebody had better pick him up before their rival school does.
November 20th, 2012 at 3:01 PM ^
Fire Hoke, Hire Petrino!
November 20th, 2012 at 3:02 PM ^
November 20th, 2012 at 3:05 PM ^
He got fired at the last possible moment before the current season, hence the panicked (and unfortunately necessary) promotion of John L Smith to interim head coach. Given the timing of his firing, Petrino hasn't entered into the hiring cycle yet, so no one has passed him over.
November 20th, 2012 at 6:46 PM ^
is Reborn Petrino.
November 20th, 2012 at 3:08 PM ^
We might consider the whole mistress episode to be irrelevant to his ability to coach a football team, but it could really be an issue in conservative states like Tennessee. Cal-Berkeley, on the other hand, doesn't care who you're banging.
November 20th, 2012 at 5:21 PM ^
Having the AD hire her without knowing about their relationship and lying on a police report is harder to overcome. He'll get another chance, but probably it'll be a job beneath his record, like Mike Leach. Leach isn't doing any favors to coaches looking for a second chance either.
November 20th, 2012 at 3:15 PM ^
But it's pretty fair to question his judgement at this point. Besides the reason he's not working today, he had that whole "ditched his team in the middle of the season" thing with the Falcons which rubs real football people the wrong way. Someone who wants to win at all costs will take a chance on him, but there will be some scared off by him.
Plus, if you're a really good program, what makes you think he won't leave the first chance he gets since he did so to an NFL team?
November 20th, 2012 at 3:49 PM ^
.......seems to be prevalent in the SEC. I can see Tennessee being extremely interested in Petrino, and possibly even Auburn, when they fire Chizik. Hell, maybe even Kentucky will take the flier on Petrino, betting that he keeps it in his pants long enough to turn them into more than cannon-fodder for the rest of that conference.
No way, though, that I see Petrino going to Cal. Cal looks over at their main rival Stanford and sees what they want and need in a coach, and will move to get someone similar. Not sure who yet, but it ain't gonna be Petrino.
November 20th, 2012 at 4:49 PM ^
I think your last paragraph is accurate. I went to Cal for undergrad. The mentality there is closer to "don't embarrass the school at all costs". In the AD's statement today, the decline in the graduation rate was mentioned near the top. The alumni would probably run the entire administration out on a rail if Petrino were even brought in for an interview.
November 20th, 2012 at 3:03 PM ^
Narduzzi?
November 20th, 2012 at 6:37 PM ^
I heard Al Borges is Cal's first choice.
November 20th, 2012 at 3:06 PM ^
When you look at the sheer volume of NFL talent he's had versus the performance on the field, it's alarming. Other than 2004, when they went 10-2 with Aaron freaking Rodgers as their quarterback, they were never better than mediocre, and getting worse over time. Here are the records, with the current NFL players resulting.
2012: 3-9 (Projected in first six rounds: Keenan Allen, Aaron Tipoti, Matt Summers-Gavin, Marc Anthony, Zach Maynard; in the conversation: Isi Sofele, Brian Schwneke, Dominic Galas, Josh Hill)
2011: 5-7 (DJ Campbell, Trevor Guyton, Marvin Jones, Mychael Kendricks, Ernst Owusu, Mitchell Schwartz, Bryan Anger)
2010: 5-7 (Cameron Jordan, Shane Vereen, Jeremy Ross, Chris Conte, Mike Mohamed)
2009: 7-5 (Tyson Alualu, Jahvid Best, Mike Tepper, Sydquan Thompson)
2008: 9-4 (Alex Mack, Cameron Morrah, Will Ta'ufo'ou)
2007: 7-6 (Brian de la Puente, Thomas DeCoud, Justin Forsett, Mike Gibson, Lavelle Hawkins, DeSean Jackson, Craig Stevens,)
2006: 10-3 (Desmond Bishop, Dante Hughes, Marshawn Lynch, Brandon Mebane)
2005: 8-4 (Lorenzo Alexander, Ryan O'Callaghan)
2004: 10-2 (Aaron Rodgers, Matt Giordano)
2003: 7-6 (Nnamdi Asomugha, Tully Banta-Cain)
On talent alone, the 2007, 2009, 2010, and 2011 teams have to be four of the most under-performing teams of the last 20 years. Just unbelievably loaded, and they couldn't get it done on the field, ever. Brilliant recruiter and developer of talent. Terrible game-day coach.
November 20th, 2012 at 3:17 PM ^
I think it's tough to conclude that Cal underperformed based solely on that list. Most of those draft classes feature one or two good players but very little depth. I would bet that a lot of mediocre BCS schools feature similar classes. One or two good players doesn't make a team - or have we forgotten that Brandon Graham went 13th overall after playing for 3-9 and 5-7 Michigan teams?
November 20th, 2012 at 3:25 PM ^
That's not a Brandon Graham situation. You're talking about 5-6 NFL starters both years. In 2009 at Michigan, it was Graham and nothing else. In 2007, Cal was pre-season #5 based on what they had done the year before, the returning talent, and the recruiting pipeline. They just didn't do anything on the field. 2010 was very similar.
November 20th, 2012 at 3:39 PM ^
The 2006 team was legitimately good too. Shared the conference title with USC that year.
I think I can pinpoint the exact moment the decline started:
They were a play away from being ranked #1 in 2007. It's pretty much all been downhill since then.
November 20th, 2012 at 9:33 PM ^
I don't see Tedford as a horrible coach. He took an awful program and turned it into something relevant and seriously challenged a USC team that paid its way to the top. This could be a serious Minnesota/Glen Mason situation.

Malzahn?
Ohios coach?

should have a bunch of buzz this offseason. There's also Peterson, mentioned earlier in the thread.

I have a feeling Purdue will go after him.
November 20th, 2012 at 3:47 PM ^
Ohio's coach (solich) is a pretty decent coach. He coached Nebraska after Osbourne retired.
November 20th, 2012 at 8:02 PM ^
Solich is 68 years old. He's at his final coaching stop.
November 20th, 2012 at 3:57 PM ^
Darryl Hazell.
Kent state at 10-1 this year and 7-0 in the MAC with a victory over the B1G's newest member, Rutgers. Of course, their lone loss was to an abyssmal Kentucky, so there's that.

I think the ball is in Louisville's court. They need to join the Big Twelve immediately. If Louisville is in a BCS conference I think Strong stays. From what I hear around the Louisville program, Louisville gave him a shot when no one else would and he wants to prove everyone who passed him over wrong.
November 20th, 2012 at 5:56 PM ^
I would add Diaco, ND's D-coordinator, to that list. With the way their defense is playing someone will give him a head coaching gig.
November 20th, 2012 at 3:34 PM ^
...it had escaped me that Cal vs Stanford a/k/a The Game on the west coast, was moved to mid-season. What an abomination. Let that never, ever happen to us. Let us punish, severely, anyone who speaks of it or even thinks of it. Now there really is only one "The Game." Okay, two:

Kinda like what we're gonna see in the PAC 12... Stanford is playing UCLA this weekend. And again next weekend for the PAC 12 championship.
November 20th, 2012 at 3:39 PM ^
au contraire mon amie......
I predict that the 2015 against OSU will be played mid-season, UTL, and will be done so to avoid the "problem" of potenital back-to-back games to end the season.
I'm calling my shot here....

The other reason will be to showcase the Big Ten on the National Stage.
