What's the story here? Guy his caliber doesn't just up and leave a school where he has a good shot to be the QB of a national championship team to go to a school like Maryland just for the hell of it, even if he had a strong relationship with Locksley.

Doesn't want to sit a year behind Mac Jones. This is the transfer portal era.  If you're a top 150 recruit and you're not starting by year 2, you're looking to find a place where you will.  The question will be is he eligible?  I'm not aware of any reason to suggest he warrants a waiver, unless not being named the starter is now one of them.

Mac Jones is the starter unless Bryce Young shows out and passes him. Taulia had no path to start unless Jones and Young both got injured. Bryce Young is the real deal. He's somewhere between Kyler Murray and Lamar Jackson but with better arm talent than both of them imo

Solid player but better arm talent than Murray and Jackson? GTFO - those are at least 2 of the top 5 arms in the NFL right now and dudes are only 4-5 years older than him. Also, let's not forget that Murray was a legit MLB talent (not just got drafted in the 20th round). Young will be a stud, but nothing I see on his film justifies that statement.

"those are at least 2 of the top 5 arms in the NFL right now"

Huh? According to who? A lot of people actually consider Lamar Jackson to be one of the worse arm talents in the NFL. And I've always thought that a lot Murray's throws hang in the air too long while Young has a nice array of balls he can throw

Maryland sure seems unable to get out of their own way. But the champ in that regard is Illinois. They have close access to Chicago and St. Louis. Both prime B1G recruiting areas. And yet Illinois sucking is as certain as death and taxes.

Now that Greg Schiano is back coaching at Rutgers, he might have a better chance of keeping in-state talent for the Scarlet Knights.  Both he and his coaching staff have great connections to New Jersey’s high school football coaches. Two of his assistants are former head coaches at a couple of the top parochial football powers in the state –  Nunzio Campanile (Rutgers’ interim head coach last year coached at Bergen Catholic where one of his brothers is the current head coach) and Augie Hoffman (former NFL player who was head coach at St. Joseph Regional of Montvale until he joined Schiano’s staff this year).

Among New Jersey’s top 14 recruits for the class of 2021, five have committed to Rutgers and two others are projected to commit to Rutgers. LINK

One of Schiano’s defensive assistant coaches is Ross Douglas, former Michigan and Rutgers player who started at linebacker every game during his senior season at Rutgers. LINK

I saw him throw at the Elite 11.

He’s, um, undersized.

Wasn’t going to see the field at Bama.

In fairness... has some talent....

No one will question Locksley’s ability to recruit and lure players in. The question is can he coach.

Theres little evidence suggesting he can. At least not as a HC.

I know a lot of 'Bama fans, their universal reaction to this news was a shrug.  It will be interesting to see what he does in Maryland for sure, but I am not expecting Tua levels of production.
