Sugar Bowl Open Thread - 2nd Half

Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on

I'm in the liveblog, so this goes up with 2:33 to go in the 2nd quarter.

GO BLUE!

EDIT: I shall pass the bowl thread creation baton after tonight, but hopefully the rest of the BCS bowls are as entertaining as ours is turning out to be.

Game alternates between "Yakety Sax", "Sabotage" and "We Will Rock You"

It's like a three-song iPod on shuffle, except the shuffle's broken, so it skips and switches songs at random.

If the other team's faster than you, you basically have to make a controlled retreat, giving up the middle if necessary to take away the big plays, until being in the red zone shortens the field.  Eventually the receivers are in the end zone (without the ball) and there's not much to do besides scramble around.  They may get open, but it's tough for the QB to see them because they're not part of any timed route anymore.  The overmatched secondary can then play a more aggressive zone without worry of getting burned for 50 yards because there isn't any 50 yards left to take.

This isn't to be confused with a prevent defense, which is designed to bleed clock.  However, fast guys are a nightmare to defend in space.  So you take the space away the only way you can -- let them in the red zone.  Michigan's secondary can't beat these guys on speed, so this is probably the only way to do it.

I have seen him a lot tonight. Its not a good thing for a corner to he in on that many plays but he seems to flow to the ball well on runs. If we can fill some key spots this defense will be really good for a long time.
