Student Section - defend yourselves

Submitted by Beaublue on November 12th, 2022 at 10:52 PM

By the start of the third quarter maybe half of you were gone.   By the fourth quarter 2/3 of you were gone and by the end of the game how many were left?  Maybe 300?

This is the level of support you put out for your team?   Pathetic in my opinion.   They used to have some competition for best student fan section.   You guys wouldn't make the cut.

What was it?   A little snow get you down?  I hear college kids have to bring their dog to college now.  Did you have to leave to let Fluffy out for a dump?   They have brought in entertainment to deal with your lack of attention span.  Are you not entertained by the 100 yard dash, the MC, the DJ?  Most of you couldn't even stick around for Mr. Brightside.

The team busts their butt for most of the year to get to where they are today.   Sad that their fellow students can't stick around to show they appreciate it.

I watched the single game rushing record set on a day with similar weather, if you add some freezing rain and sleet. There were only a handful of fans in the stadium. We were there because we were a tough Jr. High School football team, and in those days the bus driver didn't have a cell phone, we had to wait for him. We huddled together in front of the scant protection offered by the old press box. Today I am happy I witnessed the game. Back then, if I had a warm girlfriend waiting I would have been out of there in a heartbeat. Lighten up Francis.

Can I just agree here that I'd love more students to come by kickoff and stick around to the end to support their team, but also say I think the OP is a little out of line with the level of vitriol.

I love being at the game, wish students would stay around even if the game's over. but damn, chill a little

Jeebus.

Calm down OP. There were literally 30 empty seats around me in the chair backs when I arrived with the band. 25 were still empty in the second quarter...The down in front crowd doesn't represent well in inclement weather either.

Kids gonna drink, try to meet other kids etc.

This is such a shitty take, for so many reasons.  I'll try to put them all in one sentence.

Cold, wet, red jacket Full Media Timeout Guy terrorizing the in-person fans, November at UM is an extremely difficult time academically so if there is ever a time to bail early it's when you're wet and freezing and the game is decided, offense only functional in 2nd and 3rd gear the car still spins off the road in higher gears, as opposed to out of towners making a special weekend for one game students get all the games, and this one had a 30 point spread before NU's backup QB got knocked out of the game rendering the competitive part over, on a day like today the students owe others nothing.

You're being selfish, step down from your pulpit and get some perspective.

Go Blue!

Dude, get over yourself. I was there (non-student) and it was a boring ass game that felt like it was taking 12 hours. It was never in doubt. Students have a hell of a lot more fun things to do then sit in the cold watching a game that has 400 media timeouts.

The student section was really bad, worse than I’ve ever seen.  I don’t think OP is totally wrong.  but they’ve made the game experience really unpleasant and given little reason to stay if it’s not competitive (and it’s cold).  The media timeouts were overwhelming to the point that each one was getting booed, and to fill the vast expanses of empty time the cheesy-level has gotten minor-league baseball level, and noticeably worse than even last year. I stayed to almost the end, but only because I’m from out of town and only go once a year, I can’t say I enjoyed it.

Neither team particularly cared at that point so why should the fans? We ran the ball nearly 70% of the time! We were using our 5th string running back in the 3rd quarter!

Blame ABC for this. Game was over the 3 hour mark with about 10 minutes to play. Ridiculous amount of TV timeouts. Pair that with freezing weather and to be frank, a pretty boring game against a team trotting out their 3rd string QB and an interim head coach. Kind of makes sense…

I left at the end of the third, and even then was questioning why I stuck around that long. The students had the right idea at half. It was a two touchdown lead against a clearly hapless opponent.

Now if you wanted to complain about the upper 1/4 being empty at kickoff, I’d be more likely to agree.

Are you actually serious? It’s a trash Nebraska team at a 3:30 kick that should never have been at that time. It was cold and dark and a boring game that appeared much closer than it actually was.

I don’t say this lightly, nor do I do so often: Shut the fuck up.

I'm more pissed about the 4-minute full media timeouts every other play.  At one point, it felt like they had 12 minutes of "full media timeouts" and about 30 seconds of actual football. It was cold out, and the constant stoppages were getting very aggravating.

I was at the game, and have two children who are students at Michigan.

The temperature and snow were “ok” prior to the game.  But, with about five minutes left in the second quarter, it became “very cool” - most likely, if you wore jeans, the jeans were wet, and the temperature drop by a few degrees made a noticeable difference.

The conditions were neither pleasant nor comfortable after halftime.

I hope that game conditions are better for the home season finale on Saturday.

I think this is the state of the program at most schools. Cold weather, fans leave early. Even when MSU was at its peak (2013-15) they had students leave before the 4th quarter during a blowout of Nebraska that turned into a nailbiter.

I was at games 1981-85 and most students stayed until the end or at least until 5 minutes to go of a blowout. We didn't have the gadgets nor did we have the internet and just cable TV (with maybe 1 or 2 other games going on). And yes, it was common to smuggle in rum to go with the Cokes sold at the stadium. People were never searched. Times have changed. Period.
