I'd say by this time next week we'll know.
If not sooner.
It's Vrabel or Coach Harbaugh...
Anyone else and their "fan base" will burn down their building.
January 20th, 2024 at 12:30 PM ^
What fan base?
January 20th, 2024 at 12:56 PM ^
IF they were to hire JMFH, the combination of curious Michigan fans and Harbaugh hate watchers could double their ratings.
January 20th, 2024 at 12:58 PM ^
As a Chargers fan, I’d love to have 10 more of us.
January 20th, 2024 at 1:19 PM ^
Move back to San Diego.
January 20th, 2024 at 5:25 PM ^
Sooooo..... uferfan.... we are going to blame it on you for taking our coach.... shame on you!!
January 20th, 2024 at 6:51 PM ^
If it happens, I’m truly sorry. I’m in Michigan and have been all of my life. My Dad took me to San Diego for a Chargers game in 1979 when I was five and I’ve been a fan ever since.
I’ve been to 14 Chargers games and 208 Michigan games in my lifetime, and I have far greater loyalty to Michigan. I’d certainly hate to see Jim go, and hope that Vrabel or Johnson wind up as the HC for the Bolts.
January 20th, 2024 at 7:48 PM ^
LOL. There are no Chargers fans. They are renting from the Rams and have the worst owner int eh NFL. Harbaugh doesn’t want that.
January 20th, 2024 at 9:17 PM ^
The NFL Clippers.
January 20th, 2024 at 1:46 PM ^
Both of them.
January 20th, 2024 at 2:08 PM ^
What building?
January 20th, 2024 at 2:26 PM ^
Rams stadium.
January 20th, 2024 at 10:19 PM ^
Right, they do not own a building to burn down.
January 20th, 2024 at 4:05 PM ^
Seriously tho - think about it (see my post below).
This is the list of the most popular (mens) teams for the greater LA area:
1a. Dodgers
1b. Lakers
3. USC - all sports
4a. Rams
4b. LV Raiders
6. UCLA - all sports
7. Clippers
8. Kings
9. Angels
10. Galaxy
11. Ducks
12. about 25 other NFL teams
13. about 50 other CFB teams
14. about 20 other NBA teams
15. about 20 other MLB teams
16. Chargers
The Chargers are a piss poor franchise by NFL standards with no major assets. They pay rent to Kroenke. They own nothing but their name and licensing and a construction company that does work in the central valley - Fresno, Stockton, Modesto. They are generously the 15th biggest brand in LA. They don't have the $$ to pay Harbs.
January 20th, 2024 at 9:21 PM ^
Maybe it's changed since the Super Bowl victory, but I would have guessed Raiders, UCLA, and the Clippers ahead of the Rams.
January 22nd, 2024 at 4:41 AM ^
You forgot 49ers 1c.
seriously you wouldnt believe it until you went to a LA vs 9ers game at SoFi.
January 20th, 2024 at 6:51 PM ^
Exactly
January 20th, 2024 at 12:53 PM ^
I think Ben Johnson and Bobby Slowik both make a lot of sense -- given that they're trying to maximize Herbert's abilities.
January 20th, 2024 at 1:04 PM ^
Bobby Slowik took a rookie QB to the playoffs and won their first round game. That’s who I’d go with - especially being in the Shanahan coaching tree which is pretty well proven by now.
January 20th, 2024 at 3:59 PM ^
Charger fans are going to go nuts if the pick a flavor of the month guy like that over Harbaugh, who has proven everywhere he’s been that he’s a winner. But picking a guy for Head Coach because he was standing there when a great player showed people he was great is the kind of dumb thinking that is common in the NFL and life, so it would be a very Chargers thing to do. It’s the same kind of thinking that went into hiring the guy they just fired, who got the job because he coordinated the #1 defense.
January 20th, 2024 at 1:29 PM ^
I keep saying this to anyone who'll listen -
It's just not in the Chargers nature to make a giant hire for huge money. I followed the team for years until they Bolted (see what I did there).
Their biggest name hires that anyone can remember are Marty Schottenheimer & Norv Turner. They picked both of those guys off the scrap heap. Marty was out of coaching for a couple yrs & Norv had been fired as HC a couple times with very little success to show for it other than his OC stint with the Dallas teams.
The Spanos ownership is a family run org and there isn't one person who has final say in how money is spent. I believe Dean has another brother and sister and for all I know kids (nephews, nieces) might even have some say. It would be a shock to see them make some big splash with a major contract for a big name HC who's in their prime. Because it's never happened before.
January 20th, 2024 at 1:40 PM ^
If JH doesn't get hired this year, I don't see it happening ever. The Chargers are the absolute perfect fit for him.
January 20th, 2024 at 4:01 PM ^
thats ridiculous...seriously.... far better to stay and be the new saban another 4 years and maybe win a few titles, then go to a nfl team with good cap space, in your twilight. chargers a 100M over cap and thats not nothing.
January 20th, 2024 at 5:02 PM ^
win a few titles
be the new saban
Just stick around and win a few titles and have a Nick Saban like run? Oh that's it?
I don't know how to break this to you. There has been one Nick Saban in the history of the sport. Michigan has a much smaller pool of recruits than a Southern school or even Ohio State. And even that guy couldn't win at Michigan State. Your expectations are why I am bolting instantly if I am Harbaugh. 10-3 is hard to do especially with a tougher conference. Michigan won a title with a composite talent group based on high school rankings that has been done exactly zero other times. This was a unique set of circumstances with a great group and a great coaching job.
My hope (and I would be thrilled) is if Harbaugh comes back Michigan will be similar to 2015-2019 in an average year with the OCCASSIONAL year like 2021-2023. That would be a massive win. And it is actually doable, not easily I might add. But doable.
January 20th, 2024 at 12:30 PM ^
Sources say they aim to hire someone by memorial day
January 20th, 2024 at 12:34 PM ^
I'm genuinely curious if Harbaugh had the NFL interview process in mind when he mentioned pushing back spring practice by a month. lol
January 20th, 2024 at 1:03 PM ^
I wondered about that too but also was curious if a second round of interviews was a turnoff for Harbaugh. More so being like, you know what you're getting with him. Why would you need a second round interview? What else would that tell you?
January 20th, 2024 at 1:22 PM ^
I think Harbaugh wants the NFL job bad enough to show up for a second round. Just my take.
January 20th, 2024 at 1:32 PM ^
Hiring a coach is a multi-year, multi-million dollar decision, a second round of interviews is just common sense. Coaches' W-L record are a matter of public record, but the chemistry between a team's ownership and a coach is not something that can be determined in one interview.
A coach and a team both have to determine that the partnership makes sense. Otherwise, the relationship will end up in failure for both sides.
Specifically, Harbaugh could be passing up a 10-Year, $125 million contract to end up in a job where he gets fired in four years. For the team, it could end up in a failed hire and being back to where they were now. Everybody loses.
January 20th, 2024 at 4:02 PM ^
With Harbaugh’s track record, it’s just a demonstration that they’re a poorly run organization that has a hard time making decisions, or they’re playing game to try to assuage fan anger when they don’t hire Harbaugh.
January 20th, 2024 at 2:03 PM ^
If we’re sticking with the “Harbaugh wants to feel wanted” narrative, I think it’s hard to imagine that desire is satisfied if you’re going into a second round of interviews with 5 other candidates.
I think Harbaugh’s interest in the NFL is genuine, but I also think there’s a not-insignificant part of him that wants to finish his career out here.
He’s obviously willing to go back to the NFL but only if the situation is perfect for what he’s looking for. That explains the fact that he’s willing to interview and see what they have to offer him, but looking back at his comments on the Vikings job it’s pretty clear he wants there to be a significant level of appreciation for him taking the job and a level of dedication in getting him what he feels he needs to win.
It really seems, and this goes for Michigan also to an extent, he’s waiting for someone to flat out say “You’re our guy, tell us what you need and it’s yours.” Setting up second round interviews, which I agree don’t typically tell you much that you don’t already know, doesn’t really convey that message.
January 20th, 2024 at 7:11 PM ^
He only wants to “feel wanted” by Michigan. When it comes to NFL teams, he’ll take any job he can get lol.
January 21st, 2024 at 3:23 AM ^
Based on what? It seems pretty clear that Harbaugh is being selective and demanding
January 21st, 2024 at 7:56 AM ^
My own observation, which could be completely off target, is that Harbaugh sees the NFL and college arenas very differently. The college job allows coached to build their rosters with the players they choose, so being wanted by the players and school matters, especially when facing a league structure that can throw spitball allegations at a coach and drive unfettered punishment. In the NFL, it's more about control over a roster that is selected by your boss. The league isn't a concern like the NCAA because the rules are more refined and the the league is nothing if not fair in doling out discipline. Very different employment characteristics that Harbaugh well understands, and is trying to maximize.
January 20th, 2024 at 1:50 PM ^
He absolutely did, the way the NFL is moving a lot of these jobs will not be filled until February.
January 20th, 2024 at 12:30 PM ^
OSU is blowing past us so far this off season, getting Downs was huge
We need to get moving forward
January 20th, 2024 at 12:33 PM ^
Ohio State wins every off season. How’s that worked out for them under Day? Agree we’re in neutral right now but not gonna fret about that
January 20th, 2024 at 4:06 PM ^
Exactly.
Saban w/ all of Saban’s players, coaches, and decades of program momentum…
VS.
Ryan Day who’s snagged Caleb Downs and some portal gems…
Somehow third base’s offseason performance means 2024 OSU is to be feared more than 2023 Alabama?
Nah. Let them be offseason champs every year. I’d rather have the B1G championships and CFP bowls.
January 20th, 2024 at 12:34 PM ^
People need to stop overreacting to this. Michigan was busy doing something...oh yeah, winning the national title. They'll get guys in the portal later
And I'm not gonna outright dismiss OSU, but it's still an uber talented team led by Ryan Day and a good defense from Knowles. It'll be tough as always, but they're always talented. And now they added Bill O'Brien which has everyone in Tuscaloosa cackling. I'll start being worried when they figure out how to run the QB and use a RB
(Also, everyone needs to take a breath and enjoy the national title for the summer before moving onto next season. Savor it. Enjoy it. Rub it in the faces of the MSU and OSU fans in your lives. This only happens once in a generation for Michigan)
January 20th, 2024 at 1:05 PM ^
Yes, rub it in. Point this out to OSU: in the last 50 years OSU & UM have both won two national championships in football. Despite all the bags and flashy cars for OSU.
January 20th, 2024 at 2:22 PM ^
This is honestly really pretty remarkable given the very different ways the two programs have operated over that span.
January 20th, 2024 at 12:36 PM ^
Again, OSU hasn't added to their biggest needs - lineman, specifically O Linemen. They've also downgraded at QB. This is Iowa on steroids
January 20th, 2024 at 1:03 PM ^
The OSU O-line played well against Michigan but crumbled against Missouri with the loss of just one player--rising red-shirt sophomore center Carson Hinzman who seems to have been out for speaking a little too frankly to his hometown paper.
They did get guard Donovan Jackson to forgo the NFL draft. And for center they got Alabama's Seth McLaugh.
Will the next snap be good?
January 20th, 2024 at 1:10 PM ^
OSU also downgraded at WR. This should be the weakest OSU wide receiver room in the past 5-6 seasons.
January 20th, 2024 at 1:18 PM ^
We beat them when they had Stroud, Marv and a hundred other 5-stars. They no longer have Stroud or Marv. Net win for the good guys. And they will lose at Oregon.
January 20th, 2024 at 7:48 PM ^
I agree with that, but also Tate is going to be a freaking boss. So it’ll be a step down, but probably still the best receiver room in college football.
January 20th, 2024 at 2:10 PM ^
Isn't Michigan kind of Iowa on steroids too? UM's philosophy is we're going to beat you with our running game and defense. We'll mix in some passing and if we get behind, we'll throw it some more.
January 20th, 2024 at 2:29 PM ^
No. Michigan’s offense is far more mature than what Iowa does. It’s not even close.
January 20th, 2024 at 3:30 PM ^
Iowa is more like "We're going to beat you with our punter"
January 20th, 2024 at 12:36 PM ^
We were never going to pursue Caleb Downs. We have two 5th year senior safeties coming back.
