I'd say by this time next week we'll know.

If not sooner.

It's Vrabel or Coach Harbaugh...

Anyone else and their "fan base" will burn down their building.

If it happens, I’m truly sorry. I’m in Michigan and have been all of my life. My Dad took me to San Diego for a Chargers game in 1979 when I was five and I’ve been a fan ever since.
I’ve been to 14 Chargers games and 208 Michigan games in my lifetime, and I have far greater loyalty to Michigan. I’d certainly hate to see Jim go, and hope that Vrabel or Johnson wind up as the HC for the Bolts.

Seriously tho - think about it (see my post below).

This is the list of the most popular (mens) teams for the greater LA area:

1a. Dodgers

1b. Lakers

3. USC - all sports

4a. Rams

4b. LV Raiders

6. UCLA - all sports

7. Clippers

8. Kings

9. Angels

10. Galaxy

11. Ducks

12. about 25 other NFL teams

13. about 50 other CFB teams

14. about 20 other NBA teams

15. about 20 other MLB teams

16. Chargers

The Chargers are a piss poor franchise by NFL standards with no major assets.  They pay rent to Kroenke.  They own nothing but their name and licensing and a construction company that does work in the central valley - Fresno, Stockton, Modesto.  They are generously the 15th biggest brand in LA.  They don't have the $$ to pay Harbs.

Charger fans are going to go nuts if the pick a flavor of the month guy like that over Harbaugh, who has proven everywhere he’s been that he’s a winner. But picking a guy for Head Coach because he was standing there when a great player showed people he was great is the kind of dumb thinking that is common in the NFL and life, so it would be a very Chargers thing to do. It’s the same kind of thinking that went into hiring the guy they just fired, who got the job because he coordinated the #1 defense.

I keep saying this to anyone who'll listen -

It's just not in the Chargers nature to make a giant hire for huge money.  I followed the team for years until they Bolted (see what I did there).

Their biggest name hires that anyone can remember are Marty Schottenheimer & Norv Turner.  They picked both of those guys off the scrap heap.  Marty was out of coaching for a couple yrs & Norv had been fired as HC a couple times with very little success to show for it other than his OC stint with the Dallas teams.

The Spanos ownership is a family run org and there isn't one person who has final say in how money is spent.  I believe Dean has another brother and sister and for all I know kids (nephews, nieces) might even have some say.  It would be a shock to see them make some big splash with a major contract for a big name HC who's in their prime.  Because it's never happened before.

win a few titles

be the new saban

Just stick around and win a few titles and have a Nick Saban like run?  Oh that's it?

I don't know how to break this to you. There has been one Nick Saban in the history of the sport. Michigan has a much smaller pool of recruits than a Southern school or even Ohio State. And even that guy couldn't win at Michigan State. Your expectations are why I am bolting instantly if I am Harbaugh. 10-3 is hard to do especially with a tougher conference. Michigan won a title  with a composite talent group  based on high school rankings that has been done exactly zero other times. This was a unique set of circumstances with a great group and a great coaching job.

My hope (and I would be thrilled) is if Harbaugh comes back Michigan will be similar to 2015-2019 in an average year with the OCCASSIONAL year like  2021-2023.  That would be a massive win. And it is actually doable, not easily I might add. But doable.

Hiring a coach is a multi-year, multi-million dollar decision, a second round of interviews is just common sense.  Coaches' W-L record are a matter of public record, but the chemistry between a team's ownership and a coach is not something that can be determined in one interview.

A coach and a team both have to determine that the partnership makes sense.  Otherwise, the relationship will end up in failure for both sides.

Specifically, Harbaugh could be passing up a 10-Year, $125 million contract to end up in a job where he gets fired in four years.  For the team, it could end up in a failed hire and being back to where they were now.  Everybody loses.

If we’re sticking with the “Harbaugh wants to feel wanted” narrative, I think it’s hard to imagine that desire is satisfied if you’re going into a second round of interviews with 5 other candidates.

I think Harbaugh’s interest in the NFL is genuine, but I also think there’s a not-insignificant part of him that wants to finish his career out here.

He’s obviously willing to go back to the NFL but only if the situation is perfect for what he’s looking for. That explains the fact that he’s willing to interview and see what they have to offer him, but looking back at his comments on the Vikings job it’s pretty clear he wants there to be a significant level of appreciation for him taking the job and a level of dedication in getting him what he feels he needs to win.

It really seems, and this goes for Michigan also to an extent, he’s waiting for someone to flat out say “You’re our guy, tell us what you need and it’s yours.” Setting up second round interviews, which I agree don’t typically tell you much that you don’t already know, doesn’t really convey that message.

My own observation, which could be completely off target, is that Harbaugh sees the NFL and college arenas very differently. The college job allows coached to build their rosters with the players they choose, so being wanted by the players and school matters, especially when facing a league structure that can throw spitball allegations at a coach and drive unfettered punishment. In the NFL, it's more about control over a roster that is selected by your boss. The league isn't a concern like the NCAA because the rules are more refined and the the league is nothing if not fair in doling out discipline. Very different employment characteristics that Harbaugh well understands, and is trying to maximize.

Exactly.

Saban w/ all of Saban’s players, coaches, and decades of program momentum…

VS.

Ryan Day who’s snagged Caleb Downs and some portal gems…

Somehow third base’s offseason performance means 2024 OSU is to be feared more than 2023 Alabama?

Nah. Let them be offseason champs every year. I’d rather have the B1G championships and CFP bowls.

People need to stop overreacting to this. Michigan was busy doing something...oh yeah, winning the national title. They'll get guys in the portal later

And I'm not gonna outright dismiss OSU, but it's still an uber talented team led by Ryan Day and a good defense from Knowles. It'll be tough as always, but they're always talented. And now they added Bill O'Brien which has everyone in Tuscaloosa cackling. I'll start being worried when they figure out how to run the QB and use a RB

(Also, everyone needs to take a breath and enjoy the national title for the summer before moving onto next season. Savor it. Enjoy it. Rub it in the faces of the MSU and OSU fans in your lives. This only happens once in a generation for Michigan)

The OSU O-line played well against Michigan but crumbled against Missouri with the loss of just one player--rising red-shirt sophomore center Carson Hinzman who seems to have been out for speaking a little too frankly to his hometown paper.

They did get guard Donovan Jackson to forgo the NFL draft.  And for center they got Alabama's Seth McLaugh.

Will the next snap be good?
