Sparty Schadenfreude: Chris Frey left off Butkus Watchlist

Submitted by BakkerUSMC on
Typical Sparty disrespekt, Chris Frey is the latest Spartan to be left off a major award watchlist. Hilarious bonus quote: "[Frey] plays with no regard for human life..." makes one wonder where he picked up that attitude.. link: https://spartanavenue.com/2017/07/19/michigan-state-football-chris-frey…

I learned a few moments ago that their slogan for the 2017 season is "1 FOCUS". I can think of several that would have been better...

"NO ARRESTS 2017* (*From this point forward, at least)"

"NO MEANS NO"

"REDLOCK-FREE SINCE JULY 2017"

"However, the Butkus Award watch list was released earlier this week, and there was a glaring omission. Frey’s name was not listed among the dozens of linebackers who could take home the award, which was a travesty."

Being the only competent LB on a team does not mean you're one of the best nationally lol. That would be like saying "it's a travesty that Rutgers' best QB was left off the Maxwell watchlist" Also, are we sure Frey isn't the only scholarship player left on defense for Sparty??

I remember him getting that targeting penalty a couple years ago against us, which is the only reason I know who he is.  Why the hell is this post worthy?  MSU football is quickly becoming obsolete...maybe it is time to treat it as such on this board.

Story time! I went to the same high school in Columbus as Frey and saw him exactly one time at school. He was sitting in the middle of a hallway staring at a wall, no books or backpack with him, just staring. Strange kid. His whole family is a bunch of spartan slappies too and his siblings were very obnoxious. Nevertheless the reaction the family had on social media after MSU stunned 0su in 2015 was priceless as they essentially tried to take on the whole city of Columbus while two of their kids were still in a Columbus public high school. Needless to say the kids were not received well in school after that

This guy is below average. He gets the occasional big hit and is a decent tackler but he is poor decision-maker and bad in space. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up not even being the best LB on a mediocre MSU unit.

No he's their best.  He's limited athletically, and he plays smaller than his listed height/weight.  But he's tough as nails, attacks blocks with effort, and plays his tail off.  Yes he's bad in space, but if you paired him with two other good LBs he could be part of a good unit.

MSU has another decent player in Dowell, but their MLB replacement for Bullough was below average last year.

I agree it's a huge blow. But the middle of their DL should be the strength of their team, such as it is. They have 3 promising interior guys that they like, though I'm still not sold on Panasiuk as anything other than a gap plugger. Their DEs are really in trouble, and if Cooper gets booted that are defcon highest whatever level that is. Bowers is their other guy and he was rumored to be in trouble. After that it's walkons and crickets. Agree on the DBs
