Snowflakes Thread: Offense

Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on

Again, I know they are not universally liked, but it heads off issues later and in the case of a win, I am not worried anyway really.

This is your thread for the various snowflakes about the offense and the offensive playcalling.

back with vision and the ability to hit holes and make cuts. Kudos to Drake Johnson and the Oline.

Nice game on offense, other than the usual suspect play from Gardner in the first half. I think Devin acquitted himself well for the most part.

I have no idea why Michigan kept throwing the sideline out without once faking it and going deep or running variations off it. Or maybe I mistook the repetition of these plays, but it's always been my impression that you run plays to get a reaction and then capitalize on how the defense reacts so you can counter it. Not just continually make the same call ovef and over in hopes the defense will make a mistake when that play was continually well-defended.

I don't know that there's a lot to critically dissect here this evening -

Total yards: 404 yards

Passing: 220 yards over a 22-29 performance, good for a solid 10 yards per completion and 7.59 yards per attempt with 1 INT mixed in there.

Rushing: 184 yards rushing over 35 carries, or 5.28 yards per carry. Notably, DRAKE! 122 yards, 16 carries and 2 TDs. Very nice indeed.

Receiving: Darboh rage on that one stiff arm was nice. I could stand to see more of that.

It's refreshing to have a back with burst and vision to make the line look better. These guys are not going to open up gaping holes so a back finding a seam for positive yards is a plus. It is Indiana though.

They sucked me back in a little today.  Damn.

Still not a Gardner fan, but man does having a RB with speed and cutting ability take pressure off Gardner.

Yes it is Indiana, do it against OSU and we got something.  But Deveon Smith plays at 33 rpm and DMFJ plays at 78 RPM's.  If Smith takes one step sideways or hesitates, game over.  Not so with DMFJ.

The OL had wonder wtf?

I am happy on a Saturday, it feels weird.  I know Hoke is gone, OSU is gonna kill us, but my god that was a dimension we have not had in so long.  Take Denard out because he was a QB, but maybe since Brandon Minor?

Standing ovation for the offense today. Good job Devin, Amarah, Drake, and the whole team. It was nice to finally see this team move the ball even against Indiana.

Can't tell if it's because we played Indiana and this needs to be stored in the same department as the Miami and App State games but Drake looked really good. He showed more juke moves during this game than any of our RBs have all year. Really liked the way he ran with great speed. Darboh demolishing that CB was also great

a kind-of Sustained Probing Action with RunPlays--  and then a Pass Game that at Critical Times will often look to Darboh.

the Darboh Thing is actually Critical--  because Darboh is 2ndary-WR.  But with 3rd-down 5s&8s, Funchess will get Double Coverage and Darboh will get Single-Cover for the most part.

And so the offense showed this above kind-of Steady Dynamic--  this actually IS something out of The Old Mch-OC Lineage, and it is encouraging that Nuss is finding his way to this

Great pass blocking by the RB's today. I noticed Hayes especially getting several key blocks when Indiana blitzed...they were able to give Gardner tons of time to throw.

We barely scraped 100 rushing yards against a team who's defense has been bad for years. Gardner continues to stare down his receivers. If we played a halfway decent defense, today would likely be a different story.

I know I'm a pessimist and I hate being that way, but I'm calling it like I see it.

Wins a win, I guess.

IU gave UofM a short field on a couple of occasions; kind of difficult to wrack up the yards given the circumstances. I still don't think the offense is great, but I think judging their performance based on rushing yardage against Indiana through 3 quarters is grasping at straws to fit the "offense is bad" narrative.

This game was progress, albeit with a lot caveats.  I am really interested to see how they respond to going to Northwestern.  If they can keep improving in that game, this could get interesting.  The schedule sets them up nicely for progression, capping it off with Ohio.  here's to hoping they can pull off a strong finish by improving one game at a time.

Drake Johnson in the 4th masked an average rushing attack through 3 qtrs. until the last two drives, the UM rushing attack was 22-89 w most of those runs getting stuffed. 4 carries for 55 yds in the first half helps. Which means there were 18 carries for a paltry 34 yds. Granted, the yds count, but people praising the 184 yds are a bit excited due to o we all saw a when The Drake was doing his thing in the 4th. The Drake had 2 carries for 19 yds (one carry for 18) in the first half.

Without TheDrake, UM RB's were 20-70 in 1st half.

with the DBs-LBs create in effect a 9-Box 9-Man Front.

Everyone thinks that DB-Fire and LB-Stunt are PASS-D ONLY schemes, but they ALSO can can make O-Runplays VERY difficult.

There are PLENTY of questions here--  would Drake 1st-Qtr have made Mch-rungame better.

Did Ind-D simply Wear Down down 4th-qtr, with all the running around they were doing with DB-Fire LB-Stunt.

Who knows--  Im inclined to think the Ind-D wore down
