Snap Count Depth Chart - NIU

Submitted by trueblueintexas on September 20th, 2021 at 1:55 PM

Here is the NIU snap counts in depth chart format. I've also added a freshman games played tracking chart.

A couple of notes:

  • The depth chart for DE goes Hutchinson, Upshaw and Harrell, Morris. That is it. They have not played any other backups to those four. They have played back up DT's in those spots to fill out the line when needed late in games.
  • I noticed Mike Morris was in late against NIU but still only had 19 snap counts. That number is either wrong or they pulled him early and decided to put him back in to get a few more snaps.
  • RJ Moten Did not play much compared to the other starters. Not sure if he was dinged up or they really wanted to get other guys some snaps. The beneficiary was Makari Page.
  • Haskins had fewer snaps than Edwards.
  • Junior Colson did not play much

Here's the NIU Chart (sorry it posted smaller this week, there were a lot of guys who played. 53 on offense and 42 on defense throw in special teams and Harbaugh was accurate saying they played 100 guys):

A couple notes about the Freshman:

  • I'm pretty sure I saw DE's Kechaun Bennett and TJ Guy in the game against NIU. I did not notice Dominick Guidice.
  • The guys who have played in 3 games already are: Greg Crippen, Donovan Edwards, Junior Colson, and Rod Moore. I'm guessing those three are part of the standard depth chart for the rest of the year.
  • Andrel Anthony & JJ McCarthy will also be in the lineup when game situation dictates and will most likely surpass the 4 game redshirt limit.

Here's the chart:

Perhaps the most nit-picky Michigan fan comment ever: but if accurate that Henning only saw 5 snaps, kind of tipping their hand when he enters the game.

He needs to be on the field more.  Loved that guy's high school film, reminded me of Golden Tate.  Perhaps he is not as good of a blocker as Sainristil?

In any case, if and when JJ takes over I would imagine he'll see a lot more snaps to take advantage of the Illinois mind meld

I was wondering if Henning has problems catching in practice or something but what you said does make sense. As much as we run the ball, if you can't block on the outside you're not going to get in as much.

As the season progresses, I would love to see us hit him on some crossing routes and watch him outrun the secondary.

On the podcast, Brian or Seth speculated that maybe the coaches intentionally kept Henning off the field when JJ was playing b/c they wanted to break JJ's habit of using Henning as his security blanket.

I agree though....I absolutely love Henning & hope the staff schemes more ways to use him. He's super effective, but I'm afraid that if he's only used in sweeps/end runs, his effectiveness will take a major drop & he'll become a novelty act like Eddie McDooooooooooooooom a few years ago.

Thanks for doing this. I'm a depth chart obsessive (though apparently not to the extent you are :-) and this is by far the best thing of its kind I've ever seen.

I also noticed that about Henning getting five snaps. I hope that increases, for obvious reasons. My guess is what's holding him back is that he's a poor blocker. There's no other plausible explanation.

Rumler was credited with 6 snaps in the WMU game and has not played the last two.

For the NIU game I'm guessing he was either injured, or in the unfortunate position of being stuck in-between the coaches not needing to get him 2nd team snaps and then wanting to get guys who typically would never get to play a chance to play. It will be interesting to see if he gets any play during, hopefully, a few conference blowouts.

Of all the position groups the deep bench at WR is the most full of guys I had never heard of before.

Also, what does this say about guys who didn't see any action -- I saw Stewart get in on the OL and was confused (I forgot about Noah Stewart - I though maybe Jack had flipped back from the DL) - no PT for Jack Stewart.  Or Nolan Rumler, or some other guys.

I like what we're doing in these early games with rotating players. Not only does it give us more depth and experience to the young players, but it also gives our studs less risk of injury. My understanding is that to date, we only have 1 significant injury (Bell). Any other injuries from this past game?

Also, wanted to note that I saw that CJ Stroud is playing with shoulder pain/soreness and they just lost their LG. The big ten is a slog- really wonder what the condition of our teams will be by the end of November.

Yep, I saw the same with Filiaga in place of Keegan earlier than the others in game. Man, if there was someone I thought was not real good based on last year, it's Filiaga. Even though he isn't starting he can play anywhere on the line and not look out of place.

My guess would be he's around even with most of the guys, except Zinter and Hayes but with less upside. Great to have a 6th man like him.

I counted 95 players on that chart. I imagine we had a couple kickers and maybe someone got in on kick return or as a holder? Can someone smarter then me identify which healthy players (if any) didn't play?

Did Christian Boivin really get a snap? I keep seeing in the stats on ESPN and MGOBLUE that he had a carry. But he and Leon Franklin are the same number, are they just mistaking the wrong #2?

Only 5 offensive snaps for Henning? If he's going to be one of our go tos on jet sweeps, then I'd like to get him a few more snaps in the slot as well. Otherwise teams can key on him more easily.

Glad to see Daylen Baldwin with 30+ snaps.   He was hyped a bit pre-season but then seemed to not see the field much.    Have learned he was recovering from an ankle injury.

A couple thoughts:

  • I guess you're not WRONG about the DE comment, but "Rush OLB" is the same thing so there are two more names there.
  • Guy definitely played a couple of snaps.
  • People have pointed out the lack of Rumler, but I was also surprised about the lack of CB Green-Warren.
  • I'm not sure about Anthony and his game count....probably going to be a "wait and see" with him.  Losing Bell means he's likely to exceed 4 games but I suspect they'd limit him to 4 if they can since there are five WR ahead of him.
  • I have no memory of the two walk-on QBs seeing the field.  None.

Agree, Ojabo is basically the weak side DE. From the snap count I was surprised that it seems like Harrell has maybe passed him(?), or maybe just the opposing personnel for this game.

then yeah no Green-Warren and no Eamonn Dennis or Sammy Faustin. Plus is Phil Paea didn’t get in I don’t think we will see him ever.

Appreciate the time and effort you put into these. Obviously a game like this past Sat is going to look a bit funny due to starters be rested so early.

My only nitpick on the chart is Haskins is clearly above Edwards on the depth chart.

Also noticed Filiaga in for Keegan very early in the same some as someone mentioned, I’m curious if that’s injury related or perhaps they’re still battling it out at that position.

Odjabo doesn’t get a ton of snaps relatively speaking. He’s going to be our new Uche isn’t he?

Idk. Knowing Harbaugh's treatment of QBs, the only way I see him burning his redshirt (5+ game appearances) is if he thinks he can win the starting job before season's end. I don't think he's ever had a QB who didn't redshirt at some point, not even at Stanford.

These are different times. This is different circumstance regarding McCarthy “the only way I see him burning his redshirt (5+ game appearances) is if he thinks he can win the starting job before season's end.”

McCarthy very unlikely to play 5 years of college football, so why should coaches look to RS him. More importantly,  McCarthy clearly (at worst) is the number 2 QB on the roster. He’s one snap away from being the starting QB

Always interesting information. Thanks!

Looking at the chart really brought home how thin Michigan is at DE. That could be a problem. (Hope not!)

Also made me think how great the D would be if we had landed Karlaftis. (And we were close!) Imagine how disruptive he and Hutchinson would be on the field at the same time. They both require double and triple attention but nobody could afford to try that. (And they each defeat even double teams fairly regularly.
