SIAP: MGoblog is officially big time....Cited by ESPN 'Insider'

Submitted by bing24 on

Reading through college insider on ESPN, the writer basically ripped Tom's Zeke Pike interview for their own information! Sorry if posted already, I read just about every post while bored at work and didn't see this anywhere...If I missed it, I'm just a tard and delete.

• Touted Class of 2012 quarterback recruit Zeke Pike talked about the Michigan Wolverines with MGoBlog after his visit to Ann Arbor. He had two interesting things to say:

1. "We talked to Coach Hoke for about an hour. We talked about a little of everything. They told me I was the number one guy on their chart and that intrigued me. Then we went on a tour of the Big House, which was pretty awesome. Playing in front of 120,000 people every week is amazing."

2. "I think right now they're trying to use the spread offense because of the quarterbacks they have. They're trying to gradually get to the pro style offense. Those are spread quarterbacks so it makes the position a lot more intriguing and the school a lot more intriguing because they need that true pro style quarterback."

Pike also said that he is "really close friends" with Chris Barnett, who signed with Michigan in the 2011 class.

I know I'm not supposed to post Premium content, but it's not really premium since they took out of Tom's Diary! I'm hearing more and more media outlets(paper, local radio hosts, ESPN, etc) reading this site for their UM information...We're big time boys!

See I don't understand how ESPN can charge people for content that they're ripping straight from a blog. Doesn't make sense to me.

I really find it silly all the hate some have for ESPN.  Ya I get their faults, but when you cover sports and have to 24/7 that is what it will often happen. They have some bad announcers (cough Pam Ward cough) but so does everyone. They obsess over stories but most MSM does--and in fact, readers of this blog, myself included, have no real business criticizing anyone for going overboard or for having too much interest in a story--how many F5's did most of us hit in January? I would watch College Gameday and their coverage of football over BTN every day and twice on Sunday.

Just because you are forced to use something because a viable option does not exist (gas, cable television, sports coverage, etc) does not mean you shouldn't hate aspects of the product/delivery if they are, in fact, bad.

Also, as fans, our job is to have "too much interest in a story".  However, if your goal is to cover all sports for the entire country, you should probably reign it in a bit and not let one or two stories/teams/conferences/yo-yo QB's dominate your coverage.

They also keep me up-to-date on my VERY FAVORITE teams, which are the Yankees and the Red Sox.  Quite often they'll feature meaningless games between the two.

There's more!  If I want coverage of the Redskins or Eagles, I never have to wait too long for updates from Rachel Nichols or Sal Paolantonio (both with classic Northeast reporter cadence at all times).

Yes, I *know* it's a demographic issue and that a huge chunk of their subscribers are out there.  Doesn't mean I can't poke fun at them ...

Your post postulates two levels of MGoDiscourse:  MGoBlog and MGoBoard.  In this context does MGoBlog == front page news and MGoBoard == chat channels?  Do Diaries count as MGoBlog material?  Most of the time diaries are TomVH posts or media items but sometimes something completely random gets slipped in.  I'm genuinely curious about how the board feels about this because as long as full MGoBoard powers are no longer functional on Starship www.mgoblog.com we might as well debate possible wish-list items for better organizing the threads if and when Brian finishes the next software patch.

I have it strictly becaused it comes with the magazine. They have some occasional stuff that is cool, like the 'Biggest Freak Athletes in CFB' or 'Fastest Men in CFB' type thing (Denard was #10 BTW).

I just found it funny that they're straight ripping our info...Haha, looks like we're the new worldwide leader in Michigan Sports!

If they link to it, then it still provides a chance that readers go to MGoBlog and click on ads, or in general provide eyeballs to the site.  Also Brian has chosen the business model for his site, and the content is publicly available.  So as long as the rules of copyright are followed all is good.

You are paying ESPN Insider for the collection of information, not the creation of content.  This is how publishing and reporting has worked before the internet.  For example when a newspaper just copies something from the AP Wire, they are "stealing" the content of another writer.  BUT as long as they link to the APWire and original author as the source, then all is right in the universe.

The internet hasn't really changed anything about the media creation, aside from the speed and volume of the content.  And if anything the filtering has dramatically dropped in quality.

Which may be the true argument here between ESPN and MGoBlog.  I personally prefer the filtering of media done by MGoBlog, especially since the cost to me is dramatically less than the cost of ESPN Insider.

I'm not that enraged, and I'll tell you why. How many members here say "I don't go to ESPN b/c they're just talking heads"? Yet we do get readers who post ESPN content and link to it. If we like it, we'll click on the link. Both add web-views. It's a give-take situation. Now if they didn't provide the link, then I'd be upset. Who knows, having MGoBlog directly linked on the ESPN insider article may actually drive more views and advertisement $$$ to Brian.
