Shouldn't we be playing McNamara?

Submitted by MaizeBlueA2 on November 3rd, 2019 at 3:04 PM

I've been a little puzzled as to why we haven't worked a little harder to get McNamara his 4 games this year.

Patterson is obviously gone after this year and Joe Milton is football's version of Austin Davis where everyone has him transfering if he doesn't beat out McCaffrey. With JD Johnson moving into coaching, that would leave us with TWO scholarship QBs next season...and McCaffrey hasn't been the most durable (not his fault, he's had terrible luck with dirty plays).

Sure we can take on a grad transfer...but who is going to come in just to be a backup (in this situation)?

Just a little confused as to why we're not letting young Cade get a series in these blowouts or when the game is in hand. It's not going to make THE difference in his development but there is some small value to garbage snaps. Especially under Harbaugh because he doesn't make you hand the ball off and take knees. You get to run the offense.

Maybe we kick the tires again on Parker McQuarrie so if this happens we have McCaffrey, McNamara, McQuarrie and McCarthy...and with name, image and likeness about to pass in 2 years they can all get a sponsorship from McDonald's.

Just a thought.

You've missed the point.

The point is simple...he's a freshman with 4 free games and while I don't see it happening, it wouldn't be a surprise to anyone if he was suddenly the backup next year.

It was what...2 years ago when we were on QB #3?

Regardless, injuries aside because they could happen any time. I think you have to look to get him in for a series if you can.

Like I said, I see Milton battling it out until he's got his degree. But if Dylan beat him out and he enters the portal in May...I can't really blame him either. Whether he stays or not...you get him snaps JUST like Milton in HIS true freshman year.

Umm no.  I’d agree with you if you were saying McCaffrey needs more time though.  Harbaugh is playing Shea way too late in these games.  McCaffrey will be starting next year, doesn’t have a redshirt left, and he needs the game experience.

Do you really think more reps are what Shea needs to improve? He's a 4th year senior and a 4th year starter (although that only covered 10 games at Mississippi). Meanwhile, McCaffrey has a long way to go to be ready to start next year. Completing 3-7 for just 25 yards against a weak Maryland team doesn't inspire confidence. I think Patterson should have been mentoring McCaffrey and Milton in the second half.

At this stage of his career, I don't think more game reps are going to strengthen his arm or help him to throw a tighter spiral or find his receivers downfield or get his throws off more quickly. Patterson is what he is at this point. He is capable of having a great game. Hopefully he will against OSU, but additional game reps aren't going to increase the likelihood of that.

I just dont see Milton transferring. McCaffrey hasnt shown the ability to be the starter and is oft injured. Milton will get a ton of pt next year. He might go in 21 if McCarthy beats him out

I don’t think you have enough evidence to support this.  He’s only attempted 20 passes this year, 8 of those were when Harbaugh threw him to the wolves at Wisconsin.  Milton will ‘get a ton of pt next year’?  I don’t think you have any evidence to support this either.

If we're trying to get our 4th string QB some playing time, that sounds like one of those "there are some bigger problems" moments. Say what you will about the QB situation - lord knows there has been plenty of talk about it this year - but we're not QUITE here.

Not sure why Milton would transfer.  It will be a competition to start next year, and injuries seem to happen to Dylan with some frequency.  So even if Dylan wins the job, good chance Milton gets some playing time and a chance to take it away from him.  Seems unlikely a top school would take a flyer on Milton If he transferred given his lack of a body of performances and that he wasn’t a Justin Fields level recruit coming out of HS.

No. He’s not going to learn much in scattered garbage time snaps. He is likely not even getting enough practice reps to even make him a viable game option.

"Joe Milton is football's version of Austin Davis "

This is maybe the weirdest comparison I've ever seen.

I'd have no issue with McNamara getting some snaps in garbage time tbh, but the other guys need reps too

Sunday's are by far and away the worst day on here for stupid ass threads. No matter what the result is on Saturday this place will be a garbage pit on Sunday.

I hope we so completely and  thoroughly destroy Staee that we use every QB on the roster AND the 1st and 2nd string waterboys at QB in that game.

  1. For all the aforementioned reasons, Hell No.

  2. There is no guarantee Milton transfers.  But I'll tell you what--giving reps to McNamar over Milton is a good way to boost those odds.

  3. There is a strong chance we end up with another QB recruit in the 2020 class now that JD Johnson is a medical.

  4. The grad transfer market is pretty viable for the QB position since there can often be very good players that are #2 on the depth chart at their old school.  So it's a pretty good option for us if needed in a pinch.

  5. Combine #2, #3, and #4 above, and the assumption that there will only be 2 scholarship QBs on the roster strikes me as nearly laughable.

In summary, Hell No.

When I saw the post title, I assumed it was sarcastic, but after reading it, it seems maybe not.  Milton might transfer because of lack of playing time, so the solution for that is to bypass him completely for a true freshman?  How would the coaches justify that to the team?

McCaffery is a 1-and-done starter in 2020 and wins the Heisman.  No. 4 pick in 2021 draft

Milton is a 1-and-done starter in 2032 and wins Heisman.  No. 7 pick in 2022 draft.
I just don’t see the concern

You really created a post about your worries that our 4th string QB isn't getting enough PT this year because he might be the backup next year? Wow. Bravo. Upvote for sharing.
