Searching for the Upside, Folks

Not really throwing up in my mouth next time I see the Kordell Stewart bomb?  Seems so trivial now.

I was there for that game as well, and I have to say that this feels 1000x worse. The positive for this loss (if there can be such a thing) versus the Colorado loss is that we get a chance every year in the future to redeem ourselves. Small consolation now, but 10 years from now, this game will be a bizarre anomaly in what really was the start of a new streak of Michigan owning MSU. MSU needed a miracle to beat a team that they were probably better than. The coaching gap between Harbaugh and Dantonio is real, and we're going to see proof of that in the future.

Although I grew up in Ann Arbor, I attended and graduated from MSU. Despite this fact, I have never been, nor will I ever be, a Spartans fan. I am a loyal Michigan fan and intend to stay that way. IMHO this loss sucks more than any other loss I have experienced. It sucks more than losses to Notre Dame in 1981, 1989, and 1990, more than any of several close losses to OSU in the 1970's. More than the Colorado and Appalachian Sate losses, more than losing to MSU in 1991. There is no upside to losing to MSU, ever, I HATE losing to State!

MSU did not beat us like the last few years. Us getting back to the top 10 might come sooner then I thought, 2-3 years was my guess. We were the better team today.

Especially when you lose one like this! I'm not really confident that Michigan will be that good until we get a good QB, and by the time we get a good QB and offense may be serviceable but our great defense talent all graduates. It may take a while for Harbaugh to get this team in phase, may be 4 years until we are real contenders for the B1G championship, but I'm willing to wait and watch Harbuagh build us into a great team again.

The upside is that I can maintain a normal sleep schedule over here in Europe, because after that bullshit I'm not watching another game live till OSU, and I'm only watching that one live if we haven't lost again going into it.

After years in the wilderness, we're finally back to playing Michigan football, and we still lose to fucking Mork, that classless shitstain. Anybody watch his press conference? The prick called us "weak sisters" then immediately started talking about trying to win the right way and having respect for the other team and (of course) themselves. The reckoning can't come soon enough.

In the presser he called us "weak sisters"?

They were technically out played and behind the entire game. The only lead they ever got in the game was in the final second of the game on a rare fluke and dumb luck.

I am looking so forward to the future of Michigan Football when it is back to the good old days of how it used to be when we complained about Sparty ruining a perfect season rather than getting pummeled on the field as it has been the past few years. That did not happen today, not even close. It was a good solid poorly officiated football game. "Normal" I am beginning to feel that officiating should be 2 out of 3 instead of a single person making the final decision.

I'm super bummed on the way it all ended.. But I loving watching this version of Wolverines. The Harbaugh Wolverines. Next year in East Lansing is gonna be wild. But, before we get there we've got at least 5 more games with this crew. Go Blue. Beat bye week!

The upside is we don't even have to bother getting our hopes up or thinking that we have even a prayer of beating OSU. Our secondary is going to get torn to shreds and humiliated in front of the whole country, as urban's smug stupid shit head face goes on to win a second straight title.

But, at least now it won't catch us off guard when that happens, so...upside.

Maybe there isn't always an upside, and maybe that's not a bad thing. Maybe it was just a bad game that relates neither to the games before nor to those after. Maybe we should stop looking for answers or explanations and just look forward. Next.

I'll be more concise here:

"We should have won that game" = our team is good and was in position to win at the end

"We suck" = our team is awful & miles behind our rivals

The way we lost to MSU today was a fluke, not a pattern. We cheer for a very, very good football team, led by the best coach and staff in the nation. Those kids can ball with anyone.

That is the upside.

Logged in to upvote this.  It was a fluke and this team is so much better and better coached.  After the initial, "Oh fuck," reaction its hard for me to stay too  upset about this.  Every team has games stolen at some time or another  on a fluke play.  "Welcome to football," as Coach Harbaugh said.

Those losses left me in a daryl funk for days, weeks, months. This is an aberration, that's college FB. Next year we return with a serious passing game, no disrespect meant to Rudock but next year we have guys with two years of learning the play book, we'll see the offense open up and easily win these games our defense keeps us in now.

My upside is I didn't break my hand on the last play - when I roundhouse punched the side of the couch I was on - & hit a board under the cushion. I apologized to the couch owner at the party btw.

Nothing is worse than turning off the TV in the 3rd qrt and realize that we don't stand a chance vs MSU in the past two years. That is worse feeling without doubt. A close lose never will be any worse than a blow out lose to a rivalry.

I think Harbaugh will never forget this game in his rest of his life, and bring us back to domimance to state starting from next year. As long as we find a above average QB, we should be fine. Rudock is smart, but he just can't throw a long pass, he just doesn't has a touch.

My one upside is that I know my brain is somehow currently protecting itself right now. I know this because The Victors is stuck in my head at the moment. I don't know why or how. The Sparty fight song is not what's looping in my mind. That final play is not either. The only two things I have right now are an empty numb feeling... and The Victors. This I think is what's keeping me numb and preventing me from going into deeper levels of sadness. There's some comfort in that.

The upside?

One year ago when Hoke was apologizing (still don't understand that) if you told me that this year Michigan would be 5-2 after a last second fumble by the punter led to Sparty taking their only lead of the day... and Jim Harbaugh is and will be the coach, I would take it.

Go Blue.

Upside: Poor Minnesota. Can't wait to watch that. OSU better freaking get their awesome back quick because they are going to face a determined and pissed off UM squad. Wouldn't feel so confident of this except that Harbaugh is our coach. Also.. Peppers on offense. I cannot wait to watch more of that. GOOD LUCK TO ALL FUTURE HARBAUGH OPPONENTS THIS SEASON. YOU WILL NEED IT.

Our defense played ok considering that MSU got their tackles back, but it isn't as dominant as it looked the last 3 weeks.

Offensively we couldn't run, and we couldn't throw it consistently enough to exploit MSU's weak secondary.

The only aspect of the team that looks better than it did yesterday is the placekicking.

We just have to suck it up and try to beat Minnesota.

I just remember it begin so close...

and then us killing them the next year. We didn't get pushed around or beat down this year. And with their tackles back we did beat a good Spartan team.

is real and its going to be beautiful.  Instead of in a close game that can hinge on a stupid play we'll be driving home the TD's to salt the game away to win by 20 in do time.

State is at their prime, Michigan is not. We are still in year 1, 2 months ago we didn't think we had a chance to win. Well, we did, until the Worst and Most Unlikely out come happended, this will make is Better. Its all good, state will lose a game and we will be playing osu for the championship..... GO BLUE

So much worse than this. Anger and disgust. Didn't watch the replay for 10 years. Already saw it tonight. This was a gift that was bad defense. Alabama- Auburn 2 years ago is your comparison. Get over yourselves and move on. They did so can we.

We had a residency training program reunion this week. Many years ago at that glorious UTL game, a colleague who is a Notre Dame graduate underwent that up and down rollercoaster. He really thought the Fighting Irish were going to hang on and beat the Wolverines when they scored with little left. Then the miracle of Denard to Jeremy Gallon happened and he went from elation to the lowest depth of despair.

Today I understood exactly how that felt.

There is one positive side however; the team was clearly much better than past years and yes I'm claiming some form of moral victory here. Under Harbaugh they will bounce back and polish off the rest of the lesser teams, and the big game against OSU is till there.

So lift those chins up and look forward and upward because that is where this team is going.

Go Blue!

Here's a hint:  There is no upside to today.  There just is no way that rational people can spin this as having an upside.

That is not pessimism or bitterness.  That is just the way it is.

M will win a lot more games this year and beyond.  But today, with the way they lost, there is no upside.

Michigan was getting too much attention way too fast anyway. It's been almost too easy for Michigan  fans. (Yeah, I know, I know, but you know what I mean- playing devil's advocate here, the way a coach might try to spin it to his wounded players).

Now players, coaches- and hopefully fans- will never take success and the details and fundamentals for granted ever again. Even great teams under a great coach and staff can lose under the wrong circumstances.

I honestly don't think this team is really ready for a playoff appearance this year. The lesson here this makes it more likely to ensure they'll prepare even more diligently be ready for anything and have sustained success into the future.  Would hate to be Minnesota right now.

There, gave it my best shot.  Doesn't mean it doesn't still hurt.
