The early signing period has also had unintended consequences as well.  Programs and coaches need to make the moves beforehand to help recruit for the next season.  They can also use the bowl game and the practices to make changes, then use the bowl game as an exhibition for the next season.

Locksley has said that the upcoming bowl game represents the start of the 2022 season. The practices heading into this game should help the team develop. The next step, Locksley said, is for bowl appearances to become the norm and for the Terps to build on that expectation. Locksley expects his team to have between 12 and 14 practices, and so, “it almost becomes another spring practice for us,” he said.

Whenever guys get mad at opt-outs, I look at it as an opportunity for the younger players to get valuable practice/playing time. I know people give Harbaugh crap for his bowl record, but outside of the CFP/Rose Bowl, the final score only matters for conference bragging rights and immediate feel goods.

The best part is the extra practice time/game experience for underclassmen. Losing to Alabama sucked, but there's a number of guys on the team who won't be intimidated because they've gone up against the SEC's best before and played them to a one-possession game for three quarters.

Not weird...he's got to get to work. Time to go find a QB and try to finish out their recruiting class. He can't be worried about Pitt at this point.

Obviously he wouldn't be able to recruit at Pitt...that would've been awkward with the game so far away.

That said, if Gattis left and coaches the semifinals, I can't say I'd be mad. I dunno, just a strange situation all around.

Objectively, this is a good hire for them. Their defense was decent this year and if Whipple can make their offense go to the next level, Nebraska can get out of the bottom of the big ten at least. Gonna be weird to see someone else besides Martinez as their QB but the freshman looked decent against iowa

I actually liked the idea behind their offense.  A modern triple option with a mobile QB like Martinez could be lethal (look how well they played us, Michigan State, and Ohio State).  Their biggest problem was simply mental mistakes, miscues, and awful special teams.  I don't think they need to reinvent the wheel, they just need someone to give them a solid foundation in the basics and learn how not to shoot themselves in the foot over and over again.

Maybe that's Whipple.  If he can get that offense humming and the defense stays near where it's been, Nebraska may actually end up being a major pain in the ass (they're our crossover game, replacing Wisconsin, for the next 6 years or whatever)

Four of their losses came when they outgained their opponent. The turnovers and the mistakes were too much to overcome, though.

This is a team that gave up three safeties without getting a punt blocked. The first was on a fumble after a horrible decision to return a punt from the end zone against Illinois; Martinez and Smothers were tackled in the end zone for the other two.

Clean up some of that and they're in a bowl game. I'm not saying they'd be great, but they really should have been better than they were.

The one issue next year is they apparently lose a ton off that defense so it could be a situation where they have a pretty good offense but a brand-new defense that leaves them in a bunch of shootouts they lose 42-37 or something.

I'm not saying I'm "pulling" for Nebraska but they do seem cursed to a degree that almost feels unfair at this point.  I do hope they get back to at least not being total butt.

Fortunately for them, they trade the hardest possible cross division games (Michigan, MSU, OSU) for Michigan, Indiana and Rutgers. And aside from Oklahoma (which itself is less formidable than it was two weeks ago) they have an easy non conference slate. Bowl should be easy (it probably won’t be easy).

Neither JJ nor Cade is hitting the portal any time soon, since neither has reason to do so. Whichever QB loses the QB1 battle in the summer -- it's hard to imagine Harbaugh declaring a starter before then -- could conceivably transfer, especially if the runner-up is Cade. But that's something for the future.

If I was McCarthy, I’d want a commitment from Harbaugh that it’ll be an open competition next season. If not, I’m gone now. If I’m Harbaugh and I know I’m leaning toward the more talented McCarthy, I’d be honest with McNamara, because I’d want to be fair to a guy who’s contributed as much as he has.

Agree.   It is very unlikely that both Cade and JJ finish their college careers at Michigan.   The most likely scenario to me is that JJ starts next year and Cade serves without complaint as the backup and then hits the portal.    Both are quality young men and great QBs and both deserve to start at a major college.

But as you said that's a "problem" for the future and will work itself out in the best way for all parties.

Bowman is a strong candidate to transfer again. He went from being the projected starter (only in Phil Steele's publication) to 4th string behind Villari.

I thought Harbaugh did a great job of sprinkling in some snaps for McCarthy. He got a chance to show what he could do while McNamara remained the unquestioned leader. It is going to be interesting to see how the battle for QB1 develops next season.

Welp, back to he offensive drawing board for Frosty. No bowl work for Mr. Whipple. He's going to whip Nebraska's offense into passing shape. We'll see his handiwork in Ann Arbor next season.

Came to post this...  Was surfing through the comments to make sure I didn't double post it!

But yeah, offense and defense seems okay out there, but ST provided some serious heartache.  They literally had the game won in East Lansing, all they had to do was punt to the correct side of the field!  OMG...

This is a bit strange to me. I can’t imagine why a guy in his 60s would want to leave a job where he built a great offense and is on top of the conference for a lateral position starting over for a 3-9 team. Not to mention to leave Pittsburgh for Lincoln. I’d assume he was offered a significant raise but why wouldn’t Pitt match to keep a star coordinator?

I liked Mark Whipple when he called plays for Miami years back, but this is a very weird fit scheme wise.  I think Frost may be throwing out the best part of his team, which is his option attack.
