Sam Webb Clarifies the Current Situation

Submitted by Communist Football on November 4th, 2023 at 7:32 AM

Sam Webb ($) has a Webblog up in which he describes Signgate as "at a crossroads." Details as always in the full article, but the core issue is that B1G commisar Tony Pettiti is new at his job, and therefore doesn't have the political standing (or interest) to push back agains the "majority" of other B1G schools that want Harbaugh's head on a platter. Ono, the Regents, and Warde Manuel are on Harbaugh's side, but the other schools don't buy the "rogue staffer" line and want Harbaugh fired.

The problem, from our standpoint, is that Pettiti and the other schools do have the power to unilaterally punish Harbaugh and Michigan over Michigan's opposition. So what happens next? (These are my deductions based on Webb's article, Balas' article, and others.)

  • The Stalions statement exonerating Harbaugh is a welcome development in that it buttresses the rogue staffer argument. I wouldn't be surprised if this was something that Ono/M leadership persuaded Stalions' lawyer to put out.
  • Michigan may agree to suspend Harbaugh for 2 games in order to appease the mob. But they would only do so, I suspect, if it would actually appease the mob. If the mob will only be satiated by Harbaugh being canned, then Michigan will fight that. But Michigan may not win the fight, because the other B1G schools, if united, could force an outcome upon Michigan.
  • Michigan's passive PR strategy ("we can't comment on an ongoing investigation") has been a mistake. Michigan needed to use KGB-like tactics to leak countervailing information to support the rogue staffer argument. It has clearly taken hold among the opposition media and B1G opponents that the entire program was involved in illegal scouting, not just Stalions, and this narrative needs to be rebutted vigorously.

Decisions based on mob rule and bully tactics have always worked out very well if you've studied human history /s. Good leadership won't be pressured into emotional decisions.

Leadership is standing up in the face of adversity.  If Pettiti bows to this pressure, he’ll forever been seen as a doormat that can be influenced by the whims of the mob

Any non-negotiated penalty prior to due process running it’s course requires Michigan to take appropriate action including, but not limited to litigation and possibly leaving the conference.

So my question is can they actually force UM to fire harbaugh or is their limit a very long suspension (like 4-12 games).

if harbaugh got a 10 game suspension then maybe him and UM just part ways, but can they actually force UM to fire him?

They can do a lot of things.  If Michigan won out, they could vote to exclude them from the championship game.  The same could be done with the cfp committee, especially if other conferences refuse to play Michigan.

Stalions doing what he did and being caught on the sidelines is a huge deal and the narrative has been set by ESPN and the mob.

I don't see this ending well for ALL parties involved and really reflects on why their is a process to begin with.  This will hurt the conference.

This is going to get even more ugly...  It's beyond civil at this point and I am here for it.

We will rectify who knew what regarding Stalions

And we will come to grips with this non NCAA investigation.

Lawsuits.  Litigation.  Whatever.

I’ve never seen such weak and pathetic people. You’re getting beat so you want your competitor gone? It won’t happen but this school should leave the conference. Hopefully he danishes the year and we crush whoever is in front of us. I’m sure we’re losing our coach over this but it’s hard to accept punishment for something that’s not proven. I’m getting older and I cannot do another 10-15 year rebuild.

If the conference wants Harbaugh suspended, I don't understand why it has to be as self-punishment. So just fucking suspend him if that's your decision, assholes.

Separately, I don't think there was any other approach for Michigan to take to avoid this. ESPN was never going to treat this any other way. Look at the way Finebaum flipped, it was basically a mandate. ESPN gave the other 13 schools, egged on by OSU, MSU, PSU, the cover to take this ridiculous position. If anything else is to "blame" it's when it was floated that we were continuing with the extension because that's when the other schools really lost their minds. Which means, obviously, they only have one agenda here: Get rid of Harbaugh.

So, what outcomes could they force upon Michigan beyond the suspension, which I thought was the limit of Big Ten power here? If the results of an investigation warrant a suspension, then perhaps visit it then if it is something where the fight isn't worth it (unlikely), but surely they cannot create a situation where Michigan would have no choice but to sack a coach. Maybe I am missing something, but that coach is an employee of the University, not the conference. I guess that, if I am Michigan, I am perfectly willing to test the limits of that theory and play chicken with my own conference at that point, up to and including legal action against them, if it came to that.

This part doesn't make sense to me. How can the other schools force an outcome on Michigan? Beyond 2 games, I mean? I think conference bylaws limited the commissioner to a 2 game suspension at most.

The commissioner can enforce harsher punishments beyond the 2 games and $10k fine by gather a tribal council of ADs to vote Michigan off the island. No doubt they would get the votes.

(Obviously that was a little sarcastic but there really is some vote the ADs hold if they want harsher punishments.)

"The Big Ten" is just a title in today's college football environment. You can only force tradition for so long. Does anyone actually give a shit who plays for the brass spittoon or wooden fucking bucket?  If the B10 can force a member to remove their football coach without an investigation or any actual evidence then its time to go independent for football. People who say go to the SEC are short sighted if they think we would get any better treatment over there. Go independent play whoever you want, whenever you want. There is no more "protected game" for MI. I do not care about msu. I say play one of cmu, wmu, msu or emu a season then schedule similar to ND. Pick matchups vs the clemson, usc, texas etc of the world. I'm to the point where I don't really care if "The Game" is a protected rivalry. Play them in a home and home every few years like we've done with ND.

It’s time for this university to finally reach for their proverbial sack and fight this aggressively. To date that hasn’t happened. Don’t like the momentum the mob is gaining with an apathetic leader in Warde calling most, if not all, the shots at UM to date!

Isn’t it funny how once it became evident to someone (OSU) that Harbaugh won’t be fired and the NCAA is following protocol that all of the sudden there is a coordinated effort through the BIG? It seems desperate imo. Almost like their time to win this thing is fading and they know it.

Ohio state absolutely is desperate. Theyre clinging to some belief in ‘ethics’ or some BS. Their spoiled fanbase has never had to deal with bad football and its an existential crisis for them to be on the wrong side of this rivalry. Ryan Day is desperate for the big ten to bail him out so he doesnt get fired

If the Big Ten pushes out Harbaugh over "spirit of the game" crimes based on their rival's information obtained via actual crimes, there won't be any head coaches left in two years.

Every team will try this kind of thing.  It will be anarchy.

The Big Ten, and especially it's new commissioner, can't afford that.

Michigan's idiotic response approach to this has been frustrating to observe for the duration.  It's shocking to see that it may actually result in Michigan losing it's best coach at least since Bo.

On the other hand, what the hell were they thinking, more or less fiddling while Rome burned?  Where is the leadership in our AD?  We need a replacement for our empty suit of an Athletic Director three months ago but certainly now, like today.  Maybe there is a chance to fire Warde on the spot and hang this around him somehow?  In fact this is what I would do in Ono's role.  "Give the mob a head" is actually the right approach PR-wise at this point, just make it one that looks big but is actually of little value.

Finally, this is proof to me that the sport has to find a way to distribute it's mountain of money to the players.  There is too much money in too few hands with the current TV deals.  So much money that this gamble to destroy Michigan was probably carried out at a cost that was almost negligible.

Appease the mob? Bunch of softies if they do. If I’m Harbaugh, I leave on the spot. Nothing like giving OSU and Day the keys to the castle of the conference.
