Denial, anger, bargaining, grief.
Acceptance will come soon enough.
So sad for DJ and team.

Don't forget what they say! When the going gets tough, the tough get going!
Tell them to stop saying things and instead help Jones.
Amazing how quickly a well seasoned Michigan fan moves through those stages.

You might’ve missed a few steps there. Sometimes it feels like:
dong punch, denial, dong punch, anger, another dong punch, bargaining, yet another dong punch, etc...

Shitballs!

Collins, next man up. The stage us yours young man.
But damn, this truly hurts if true. The boys better make sure they get to Saturday and beyond if need be, so Jones can get his Tournament start.
I'd love for Bufkin to get more minutes.

If it's concussion protocol, that does not take very long to clear, no?
I'm sure if they find out he's OK tonight, they can get him on a plane to indy; it's not very far away.
How long it takes depends on whether he's suffering from the effects a concussion. I feel like you must know this.
It's really difficult to say how long it will take to clear a concussion protocol as each case is different. It's a 'protocol' because it's not set on a timeline, you have to be able to clear a baseline of different cognitive tests so it takes as long as it takes. Hopefully, he'll recover quickly and be able to play Saturday. Lets hope that Frankie is ready to lead the team to a win against CSU.

I might be the only one who can’t wait to see Frankie Collins take the wheel. Jones is a great scorer, but I feel like he looks to get his own too often and forgets about the rest of the offense. Obviously he has had some great performances, he won the Ohio state game. But I think he’s too turn over prone & average at best defensively. Really excited to see Frankie get big minutes bc the only chance this team has to make a deep run is if JH realizes he has quality players on the bench and decides to utilize them.
He has to get his own at times because no one else on the team is capable of doing that.
That's how poorly built this roster is.
A fifth year Brooks and a grad transfer from Coastal Carolina were the glue holding this thing together from totally cratering.
Does he take a few extra wild or necessary shots mixed in there, absolutely.
Collins might be quicker and more potential on defense, but is he gonna pick up stupid fouls like Jones was doing earlier in the year?
Collins also can't shoot AT ALL. Not even free throws. Jones was great at those Free points.
Michigan has a size advantage in this game and Dickinson needs to get 20+ and Diabate doing something.
Offensive boards should be available.
Collins can probably help us win the game.
He MUST have the Basketball IQ to realize that there is now ZERO depth. He can't pick up moronic touch fouls or really many in general.
He's got talent, but if he plays his usual free wheeling style, that's not gonna work.
He's got to be THEE guy and that means thinking the game.
It has to be burned into his HEAD that he has to play under control and not pick up stupid fouls.
Eli can play point sporadically and Bufkin can handle. CSU does not play extreme pressure defense where getting into sets will be a problem. Need 25 from Dickinson. I still like us in the first round but Tennessee will undress Michigan if Jones can’t play.

Geez--if you cared so much you could have stuck around for another year.
If this injury is true, I hope Frankie plays a great game. But looking forward to a PG who can't shoot 3s (13%) or free throws (45%) and has a 1:1 Assist to Turnover ratio (as opposed to Jones' 2:1) getting 25-30 minutes is not a typical recipe for success in the NCAA tourney.
Frankie didn't play more this year b/c he wasn't ready; his play showed that. Hopefully he (and Kobe) can be ready for Thursday.
The best hope is that he can feed the post.
He needs to drive the ball to the basket too.
Collins has shown all season that he's not ready. He plays too fast and out of control. Unless he's improved by leaps and bounds over the last week, this is an ominous development for Michigan.
I wonder if anyone's available on the waiver wire?
I still wanted Zeb.

maybe Michigan can get him off the portal
/s
Thought Frankie was fantastic outside the early portion of the game when the team was unsettled as a whole. If they’re to win multiple games he needs to give Devante a breather every now n then. Fresh legs and take care of the ball.
Probably true, but hope it's not. Hate seeing that happen to players. Hopefully, the team can find a way to advance and he can come back in time to be a part of it.
This really sucks - for both DeVante and Michigan. There's no saying when anyone can clear a concussion protocol, and Frankie isn't ready to run the team on his own. He might have a good game against CSU (feed Hunter and get out of the way), but NCAA tournament runs are based on point guard play - they always have been.
Far from the most important point, but concussions aren't contagious. Is there a reason he can't at least travel? The poor kid has worked his whole life to make an NCAA tournament.

It would entirely depend on his symptoms. One of the important things during concussion recovery is limiting neural stimulation. Rest, low light, quiet atmosphere. doing simple tasks that don’t require a lot of thought, etc... all may play a role in recovery. So pretty much the opposite of a college basketball environment. I obviously don’t know any of his symptoms, but generally speaking, he may be missing the game in the best interest of his own personal health and recovery (as enormous of a bummer that may be for him).
This is a big blow if true. I thought Jones really started to play some good basketball towards the end of the season, and especially the Martelli games .
The 2nd half of Indiana his play was bizzare, I do wonder if the concussion happened then.
It is not unusual for situations like this to work out favorably-one of the great ironies/oddities of sports. How about we let these young men play and see what happens-if, indeed, it even happens.
Agreed. That being said, I think I'll update my bracket anyways.
How about on a Michigan blog, we talk about losing our starting PG, just hours before our first NCAA tourney game?
Also, discussing it has zero impact on "letting them play". I assume Juwan isn't preparing a pretty white flag to wave from South Campus.
This is beyond a worthy topic of discussion and a topic of serious concern for a big time Michigan sports program that many care about. The fact that its now 2 years in a row (and the McGary missed tourney), makes it feel like we're "often" not going in at our best. The flip, of course, are the 2 B10 tourney titles.
Teams do rally, of course, but that doesnt mean we'd PREFER not having our starting PG. Also, regardless of what happens tmrw, Tennessee seems like a slaughter waiting to happen.

User Name checks out...
Imma have to change my name from Ferg0dsakes to Ferf_cksakes....
I think Williams starts and Brooks slides to the 1
March 16th, 2022 at 10:27 AM ^
Williams is not a 2 Guard in this offense. More than likely its going to be Frankie Collins at the point and Eli as the combo guard.
This sucks for Jones as he was really turning it on the past few weeks, but its also a great opportunity for Frankie.
If, and a BIG IF, Frankie can play under control, it opens up a lot of different possibilities. His speed is undeniable and will really be able to break down the defense in a way Jones sometimes can struggle with.
If they can, I would really like to see some time with Collins at the Point and Moose at the 5. That could be a "Lob City" kind of offense.
With our size advantage in this game, if we had to lose Jones for a game, this would be the game to do it.
March 16th, 2022 at 10:38 AM ^
i agree - and i think houstan can slide into the 2 spot. I don't love his ball handling, but we have such a short bench, you need to get effective players on the court. Terrance at the 3, moussa at the 4.
I'm not saying its ideal, but terrance has much more real world experience than frankie. id rathrer frankie not be looked at as a savior PG starting his first tourney after being moderately used all year.
March 16th, 2022 at 10:28 AM ^
This is my thought process as well…you already have the size advantage, why not take it to the next level.
Terrible news, but its now Frankie's time to shine.
Next man up, Go Blue!
That sucks. Guy played himself into the tournament and could miss it. Hope he recovers and the team will just have to figure out how to compensate.
Move Eli to PG and start Chaundee at SG…oops, wrong season.
Really feel for Jones, essentially had his opportunity snatched away from him.
Collins, its go time, my friend.
Have to imagine this means not only a big bump in minutes for Frankie but Kobe as well. Brooks is our only other option to play point when Frankie is not in.
The one thing I was worried about, if we beat CSU, was Brooks playing all 40 minutes and being zapped against TN. This pretty much guarantees that now. Our guard depth is awful, got worse when Zeb decided to leave, and it’s definitely worse without Jones. a rotation of Brooks, Frankie and Kobe will be ok but Eli won’t come off the floor most likely.
I hate it for him because it was his dream to play in the tournament, so hopefully he will make it back in time to play.
Will suck if true, for Michigan and for Jones! Seeing a lot of Frankie noise on this thread and it may be the obvious/right choice. But with this teams proven shooting woes, would it be better to go with Brooks at the the 1 and bring in Bufkin at the 2? Bufkin can be a defensive liability but he is a better shooter! Maybe play more zone?
5 Hunter/Diabate
4 Diabate/Tournament Johns/Houstan
3 Houstan/TWIll
2 Bufkin/Brooks/Collins
1 Brooks/Collins
If Jones can’t go, you’ll see some of that regardless. Frankie is probably likely going to have to play 25-30 minutes, but that’s 10-15 minutes where the backcourt would have to be Brooks/Bufkin.
If any of those three have foul or injury trouble, who’s up next? Nunez?
March 16th, 2022 at 10:00 PM ^
Yeah or go big with Williams at 3 and Houston at 2.
Hoping this rumor isn't true. just listened to Martelli on WTKA and Sam asked him what getting into the tourney meant to Jones and he was talking matter of fact of how overjoyed Jones is. Didn't sense anything in his voice talking about him 🤞🏼
That's really encouraging.
The rumors have been... odd? It seems like a couple people on twitter and it just went from there?
I agree here. Jones was the person interviewed for the Detroit News after they got in also. If he is out of the game and not traveling they do have a funny way of showing it.
He's been very vocal about how excited he is to play in the tournament. It seems strange he'd be so public if he was having lingering concussion issues.
Edit: confirmed it was at practice.
As I mentioned, it never really made sense if it was something suffered in the IU game.
I feel really bad for him if true. I also think his loss isn’t as big as losing Livers. I think Collins and Bufkin can bridge the gap and Brooks can even swing over and run it. I’d like to think we won’t be bogged down as much. We will miss his scoring but not his propensity to turn the ball over in head scratching ways. I’d like to see if the young guns can bring it for next year’s sake.
