Rumor: Harbaugh to be offered $8 million from UM
Edit: The only reason I posted this is to start a discussion on potential compensation. I don't really believe that this ninny has any idea what UM may offer Harbaugh(if it even comes to that).
Edit 2: I deleted the link because the icky feeling I had when I first visited his blog came back with extra intensity. I don't want to give that schmuck anymore clicks than I already did.

I think if a high level tier one guy is taking this job, there is a great chance that he could be the highest paid coach in college. Money is not an object in this search, and getting a guy like Harbaugh will skyrocket season tickets.
December 3rd, 2014 at 2:31 PM ^
$25 million seams reasonable to me for one of the best coaches in the world.. take it jim.

So we don't have to wait.
Harbaugh or self immolation.
End by reading my sig.

it's Harbaugh. But my guy inside Schembechler Hall just texted me - he overheard something in the executive latrine --" I would walk a camel for a Miles...." said it sounded very much like Hackett.
December 3rd, 2014 at 2:36 PM ^
What he said was "I would walk a camel for miles in the burning Sahara rather than let Harbaugh slip away from us."
Repeat to achieve self belief.
December 3rd, 2014 at 3:02 PM ^
Hard to believe someone would have a conversation this sensitive in the "executive latrine."

10 years
100 million
Put it out there first, don't slowplay it. go for the big number. We can afford it, we need this.
December 3rd, 2014 at 2:41 PM ^
And I would jump on he "offer saban 10MM train, but Saban is not Harbaugh. Schissel might bite on the number if it's someone who gives a shi about ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE.

I slightly understand the hesitation in the $8 million amount, but you have to ask how bad you want this guy. I truly believe JH is a once in a generation coach and there is no way we can pass on him because of financial considerations.
That being said, are we capable of hiring a coach on the rise for a more modest salary? I sure as hell hope so with the resources we have in the search process.
December 3rd, 2014 at 2:46 PM ^
what-have-you done-for me lately crowd, in order to justify his future pay if he comes to UM; I believe Harbaugh is second in NFL wins after Belichick these past three years.
December 3rd, 2014 at 2:55 PM ^
His win % is better than Belichick right now.
December 3rd, 2014 at 3:20 PM ^
Which makes SF's ownership and management even more stupid than that of the Bears. Dumbfounded.
December 3rd, 2014 at 2:57 PM ^
Is a great investment. They will get their money back and then some.
December 3rd, 2014 at 3:00 PM ^
8 million per when Michigan economy is still in the toilet and you're rasing tuition may be a recipe for another AD/university PR disaster both exteranlly and internally - just what we need.
Pay him 6 mill or whatever it takes to make him the highest paid coach in the B1G and load it up with incentives. That may strike the balance Schlissel and Hackett proclaim they seek.
December 3rd, 2014 at 3:07 PM ^
department.
December 3rd, 2014 at 3:06 PM ^
I'd offer him a 5 year, $6.5 mil/year contract, final say in the AD hire, and bonuses out the wazoo for Big Ten and National Championships. He'd be the highest paid coach in the conference, a little bit under Saban, with complete control over football and no worries of a meddling AD.

December 3rd, 2014 at 3:48 PM ^
Agreed.
Hell we could get Saban for $8M per. This is astronomical money. I am pretty intrigued how everyone is like fuck it, whatever. If that's the case offer him $15M a year because hey we can do anything we want, money is no object, ROI doesnt fall off appreciably until we get over $30M per season, and no one would say no to $15M.

My son sold some retro Jordan's on ebay. He paid $150 for them. On the last day of bidding, we watched in the last 30 minutes as the bidders just went crazy. The winning bidder ended up paying $600 for them. Yay for my son except for the fact that once the guy got the shoes, he decided they weren't authentic (they were - we had them authenticated) and wanted his money back. Begrudgingly, we gave the money back even though my son had indicated there were no returns. So I guess the lesson is, even though the market dictates, there is a point where you've been had. I thought $600 for shoes sounded crazy, and the buyer who got caught up in the buying frenzy ultimately concluded that, too.

Of moving the entire city of Ann Arbor and U of M to the Bay area. This might all fall apart if the owner of Crazy Jim's doesn't want to move again.

I'd put his base closer to $6M just so show you are #2 in the country, and you can be #1 if you do what Saban did for Bama. It's a carrot. But even at the $5.5M base he'd be #2 in the country.
But since money is no object I'm going with the $15M a year to make sure he doesnt say no. Or $14.95M base and $0.05M bonus for NC.

I am dumbfounded at the salaries football coaches are demanding these days. You are a goddamn football coach.. The President of the United States of America has a $400,000.00 salary.

Name the last president who earned his salary.

The President of the United States of America has a $400,000.00 salary.
The thing is, the United States is not in competition with other countries for our President. We don't need to renegotiate his deal every year and put in a buyout. It's like the pre-free agent era - we "own his rights" and he can't do much about it. And that's good, because it's taxpayers footing the bill, not a private enterprise.
In any event, every ex-President, upon leaving office, quickly goes on to make football coach-type money on the book/lecture circuit.

The use of a mansion, a private weekend retreat, several limousines, a couple of helicopters and two private, rather tricked out 747s.

We aren't a pro team but we are damn close in value to some. With our value fluctuating between #2 and #3 in the nation even during the Hoke years and with the ability to hire a coach like Harbaugh there is no reason to cheap out. Our merchandise sales would skyrocket.
December 3rd, 2014 at 3:22 PM ^
than pay Miles 6 M! If Hoke got 4.5 M, you know a top coach is going to want 6 M or more to coach here!
December 3rd, 2014 at 3:32 PM ^
Sean Peyton already makes $8M and the Pats will soon make BB the highest paid again with something closer to $9M. In his four NFL years JH has the same winning record as BB, who is has the best record in the league over that period. JH has been to 3 NFC title games and a SB. Sean Peyton is close those kind of numbers but not quite. So is JH worth $8M, the NFL market likey will say so. Is he worth less to CFB? Why they are getting a top 5 coach with eilite coaching skills, but we should pay him less than other guys, because other guys in CFB don't make that much, why? He should be paid what he is worth. If that is too expensive for UM then we should move on now.

You guys really think an extra million or two matters to a low key 50-y.o. married guy who has made $5M for several years? Extra couple million doesn't change his lifestyle. Location does. I think our biggest issue is convincing his wife to move from San Fran to Michigan. Bear in mind you're making the pitch when it's a miserable 25 degrees in AA ... currently 70 in SF. I don't care how much Jim he wants the job, the wife and kids are not going to be excited to leave SF. You could offer him $10M per, and it's not going to matter to a pissed off wife.
I would be happy with Les. Love his swagger.
