Rudock Challenging Orlovsky for Backup Role

Rudock reportedly doing really well.  I like how he's listed as from Michigan on the roster, NOT Iowa.  We can take the credit.

Hell of a tribute to Harbaugh and Rudock both, for the progress made within a year.

Not sorry if this has already been posted.

Well, Iowa wasn't the school responsible for his NFL career...

Rudock went from "not good enough to start at Iowa" to "second best passing season (by yards) in Michigan history" to "NFL draftee" in the second half of last season. PFF already noticed this, but that was an historic lightbulb moment that Rudock had.

TBH, for the most benefit for his career and long-term success, I damn well hope and pray he gets traded to a competent organization like the Pats - taking over for Brady after his 5TH MF Super Bowl win would be awesome or even the Steelers after Ben.

Too bad they were for the other team.  I'd like to see Rudock be first to replace Stafford on Saturday night and play most or all of the last preseason game.  They should only keep 2 QBs and you know what you get with Orlovsky.  Might as well see if Rudock is ready to be the backup.

Also, I'm sure that if we cut Orlovsky, he'll still be available midseason if necessary.

I can't believe how many games they were tied or leading in the 4th quarter (six).  That doesn't include blowing four other games where they had 10+ point leads in the first half.  That must have been a worse defense than I remember.

I still think that if they didn't put Kitna on IR, which was surprise to him, they probably win a game or two.

The worst part of that season was when Calvin caught a ball over the middle, was hit helmet to helmet but still managed to hold onto the ball while laying on the ground unconscious. The ref calls no penalty and allows the DB to Take the ball from unconscious Johnson as a fumble recovery even though he still had possession. I guess their logic was that he was un conscious. How did he become unconscious? He was hit in the head.

Pretty sure it's standard for everyone to be listed by the college they finished at on NFL rosters.

Orlovsky has been a semi-servicable backup for the Lions, but I think a mixture of age/still being unable to identify defenses has gotten to a point where he can't be a 2nd string QB in the NFL. Honestly, I think Tim Tebow could perform better than Dan O at this point. At least he won't run out of the endzone/throw pick 6s (instead just throw incomplete passes).

I'm a huge Rudock fan and think he has some upside, but I'm not sure if he's ready to be a 2nd string QB in the NFL. But who knows, he needs to go up against 2nd stringers not the 3rd stringers/guys who won't make the team in a preseason game. I'd definately roster him/keep him on the practice squad if i were the Lions.

The bad news is the Lions need to find a second string QB and the market is super tight. That's the only way I can see Orlovsky staying on the roster this year.

Can Ruddock continue taking QB lessons from Harbaugh? It'd sure as hell be nice to see Stafford challenged to keep the starting job for once. I know, I know....huge contract and all that. Still...

For all of last year, every time people would type his name several different ways and now I think it finally has struck me as to what the problem may have been. Clearly, what has been throwing people on this blog the entire time is that the third "d" is silent and sometimes not used in some alternative spellings of the name.

If they are going to keep two guys, then I think you go with Rudock and continue to develop him.

There is enough of a struggle winning games with the supposedly great and proven QB that is the starter.

Regardless I think the Lions max out at 8-8 at best with Stafford.

Jake Rudock wasn't as exciting as Denard. He never got hammered and had to play hurt like Gardner. But he's got admirable determination and heart in his own, quiet way. I'm glad to see him make the most of this opportunity.

He did get hammered multiple times.  Aside from 1 or 2 calls, he had multiple cheap shot and blows to the head go uncalled.

We aren't in position to win double digit wins without Rudock - he did so many underrated things (just having actual compsure and being a leader while playing the position.)

I don't think there is any way we get Gary or numerous other highy rated recruits if we win 7 or 8 games.

Rudock being able to come in, learn and get better while on the job, lead the team and stabilize the program was absolutely huge.

he's destined to head to the practice squad. Dan Orlovsky gets the edge because he knows the offense and has experience.  He gives them an extra eye for the game film breakdowns which is invaluable.

I understand this, but they also used a draft pick on Rudock. They have something already invested in him, I would be surprised and a little annoyed if they just threw him on the practice squad or just cut him. IMO, if your 5th round draft pick isn't even on your depth chart, you're doing it wrong.

All things being equal, or slightly in Orlovsky's favor - keep Rudock. The only reason to put him on the practice squad is if Dan O is clearly the better option. Jake has development and upside ahead of him. Orlovsky is what he appears to be - a marginally viable backup whose career progression is tapped out. If they're even close at this point, ditch Orlovsky.
