We prefer to punish our criminals through life sentences.

Back when the expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers were coached by John McKay, he was asked after yet another loss what he thought of his team's execution. He replied, "I'm in favor of it."

I wonder if any assistants will remain. Fred Jackson may never leave. But I'm curious about RR's guys.
January 1st, 2011 at 11:11 PM ^
If he is gone, I doubt any of his assistants will remain. It wouldn't make much sense considering the struggles. Besides Jackson, of course.
January 1st, 2011 at 11:12 PM ^
for purposes of recruiting. A guy like Tony Dews has great connections in Florida. I realize that this probably won't happen. But if we could take away from these 3 years a strong FL pipeline, it would make me feel better.
January 1st, 2011 at 11:31 PM ^
That is an interesting point. Hypothetically, if Harbaugh comes, California may take the place of Florida. We still would have a bunch of Florida kids on the roster, so that may help down there. I would hate to see the FL pipeline dry.
January 1st, 2011 at 11:45 PM ^
You look at what Muschamp is doing at Florida. He's keeping some on the staff -- primarily for recruiting purposes. Of course, I understand there are very different circumstances in this coaching change.
The one thing about Harbaugh that intrigues me is that he really does have a national recruiting plan. He has big time players from NJ, GA, TX all coming to Stanford. If we can harness that type of plan coupled with our traditional Florida, Michigan, Ohio base, I think this team will be loaded with talent.
January 2nd, 2011 at 12:47 AM ^
fred jackson? but yeah, the rest will probably go with RR to clemson or wherever.

I know I am dreaming but it would be sweet if we retain mcgee and the spread. I really enjoy watching it now and seek out games on saturday with teams that run it.

Thanks, Boyz....
I'm as frustrated and bummed as anyone, but on some level you have to feel for this guy a little. I mean talk about a kick to the balls......
January 1st, 2011 at 11:33 PM ^
Ever noticed that his hair is much grayer now than it was in December '07 when he was hired? It's like watching a President's hair go grey from stress.
January 2nd, 2011 at 3:40 AM ^
This would be so much easier.
January 1st, 2011 at 11:13 PM ^
Yeah, the guy looks pretty wore out. Good news is he may be going on a little vacation starting next week.

I would think Dantonio dreads the day when he has to recruit against Harbaugh.
January 1st, 2011 at 11:52 PM ^
Yeah, I really don't see Dantonio winning a single recruiting battle against Harbaugh.
January 2nd, 2011 at 12:06 AM ^
God I hope we live to see that.
January 2nd, 2011 at 8:09 AM ^
Dantonio probably has the most to lose if Harbaugh comes here because they will be going after the same type of athlete; Brian Kelly may gain the most because of the the type of offense he runs.

Just watching this interview makes you realize what a great guy RR is, and how much he cares about Michigan Football. Whether he's the coach a week from now or not, you can tell he gave it his all and is probably more dissapointed in the last 3 years than any Michigan fan like you or I.
January 1st, 2011 at 11:48 PM ^
second that - glad he came and hope he stays
January 2nd, 2011 at 12:05 AM ^
His record is awful. At some point he has to provide signs that he can succeed here. He has failed to provide data at UM to show that he can.

I feel for the man as well, but his record speaks for itself.
January 2nd, 2011 at 12:17 AM ^
Because I like him and think he is a good coach. If you have a different opinion you are entitled to it
January 2nd, 2011 at 12:23 AM ^
Do you divorce your coach because he started with a pile of shit and did not produce a superteam in 3 years ? I realize JH is avaliable, but what does this tell the world about the stability of your program ?
January 2nd, 2011 at 12:48 AM ^
It tells the world that you are tired of getting your ass-kicked by virtually every team you play that 's not a MAC-level opponent.
January 2nd, 2011 at 3:45 AM ^
We had troubles winning close games against Indiana. Yea, they were fun in all, but...
We're Michigan.
January 2nd, 2011 at 9:32 AM ^
I dont think its the wins vs. losses that is going to lead to RR leaving I think it is the quality of losses. We can not get killed like this against teams like Miss St, OSU, MSU, Wisc. Maybe depth has something to do with it because it seems that the first quarter of the games are close but I thought depth had something to do with the 4th quarter not the 2nd quarters
January 2nd, 2011 at 12:18 AM ^
I agree. You can tell he and his staff gave it their all. Whatever happens I hope he and his family end up in a place they feel welcome and can continue to do the things they love.
January 2nd, 2011 at 3:13 AM ^
Yes, and this may be the experience he needed to fundamentally improve himself as a coach. The B1G has exposed him in some ways. If you read the biography of Bill Belichick, The Making of a Coach (a great book), you learn how important his failure as coach of the Browns was to the success he has been in New England. Rich Rod is a great guy with real ability as a coach. Today is the bottom for his career and he is virtually certain to be fired for what I think is the first time this week. Pretty tough. But strength and resolve come from it.

I kinda feel bad for RR because he looks like he is exhausted and has been through hell. I have also heard that his kids are being harassed at school.....Is this true? I think that it would be good for both parties to reach a agreement to end this marriage and find another coach. I wish it would have worked out but scoring 24 points against Ohio State University in three years is not cutting it.
+ The three losses to Michigan State.

January 2nd, 2011 at 12:02 AM ^
I think RichRod should get his fourth year because of the train wreck we will see in recruiting and a current roster that wont fit a pro style offense. However, this is all his undoing. He came in with a unique offense that would resolute in long struggles with the complete overhaul of the roster. He did not need to change the defense at the same time.
He could have waited until the offense got clicking to change up the defensive philosphy but he wanted to do it all at once. He brought in guys who had never run such a defense and expected it to work. He overreacted on Scott Schaffer (who has turned Syracuse's defense into a top 10 defense) and hired a guy who destroyed a proud football program (which ironically enough turned things around in only two years.)
Not only did the offense continue to struggle, the defense kept getting worst. Players continued to make the same mistakes over and over again. The freshman who were forced to play all year didnt even look like they should have been playing Div 1 football. Everything got progressively worst and the blame is on the coach.
Tough times for Michigan football is ahead.
January 2nd, 2011 at 12:26 AM ^
you did graduate from UM, right ? But since it's midnight there I forgive you.
January 2nd, 2011 at 12:27 AM ^
Tough times do not but but Tough people do!! Coaching at MICHIGAN is no easy task and you can clearly see it in Rod's face.
I want the best for him but i am not to sure that place is MICHIGAN. I mean, just watching the Oklahoma/Uconn game, they were talking about Harbaugh and you know that has to take it's toll on RR. I remember hearing his name while he was coaching Woody Dantzler while at Clemson and i would like to see him there if he does leave.
The thought of Harbaugh is exciting and i will give you one example; Pete Carroll asked Harbaugh, "What is your Problem?" Harbaugh responded with, "What is your problem?" That is the man that i want coaching MICHIGAN!!
WE ARE MICHIGAN!! The future is not yet written but THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT AT MICHIGAN!!
January 2nd, 2011 at 2:44 AM ^
Michigan has a roster now, and a good recruiting class shaping up. A good coach can build it into a good team.

" What's your deal"
And if that is all it takes to win you over, I'm glad you're not making the call.
January 2nd, 2011 at 2:41 AM ^
has done during his time at stanford, but i do think he resume is scary similar to RR's prior to him making his way to AA. My hope is Db keeps RR but mandates a complete overhaul on defensive coaches. We need to bring in a DC and let him hire his own staff. The one thing i think is a problem is GERG defense doesnt have an identity and i am hoping a fresh coaching staff can provide this. This is going to be a long week in AA!
Hail!
January 2nd, 2011 at 3:50 AM ^
You have to give Harbaugh that.
That, and this is the Pac 10, which is most likely the top conference in America this year, it's that good, and JH has Stanford flippin University at 11-1 in said conference, their only loss to the #1 team in the country. His resume is looking pretty darn good.
I won't be glad to see RichRod go... It's just time.

Scary thing it it might be hard to get a quality DC in next year with the job status of RR being unknown.
