RIP Carrie Fisher

I knew it was something like that, but I didn't have my Carlin handy... ;-)
Massive losses. Can you imagine the effect on our nation today if we lost 75K going into Afghanistan? Or Iraq?

Then toss in the flu of 1918 that killed millions, including somewhere around 700,000 Americans. I like being around now.

2001?

1861-1865 weren't years of peace in the good old USA. We are a tough resilient nation. Life goes on.

I'm pretty sure those years no celebrities died. Those years have since been known as the "Golden era of no celebrity deaths".
A few other people may have passed away during that time though or so I've heard. But clearly 2016 is the worst year ever - just ask anyone under 25.

Or anyone who failed their World History class(es).

1863 in the US has to be in the running for worst year ever. And probably any year between 1930 and 1936.

Stable doesn't necessarily imply that a patient is doing well. I'm not a medical doctor, but I would think that someone on life support with no brain activity would still be in "stable" condition. At any rate, RIP Carrie. I understand she had a few challenges to overcome in her life.

Always enjoyed her as an actress and loved her spunk and sassiness, she will be missed.
December 27th, 2016 at 1:06 PM ^
That's surprising. Only 60. She's been a consistent force on the screen her entire career.
RIP Princess.

She did a LOT of drugs and drinking. A LOT. That will definitely take its toll.

Got a little choked up seeing the image of 1977 Leia all over again on the big screen. Just like when I was a little dude sitting in the theater, way back when, lettting those iconic images wash over me.
And now, it's even more poignant.
Damn.

That wasn't Carrie Fisher at the end. it was Ingvild Deila. Looked amazing like her though.

Ingvild played the body double, but Fisher's 1977 likeness was digitally superimposed over that. In essence, it WAS 1977 Leia on the screen. So, you're both right and wrong. ;-)
Same thing was done with Peter Cushing/Tarkin.
December 27th, 2016 at 1:23 PM ^
very cool. Didn't know that. I thought she looked amazing like her.
December 27th, 2016 at 1:42 PM ^
Not quite. She has the same facial shape/structure, but looks a helluva lot different. The guy they used for Tarkin was even more impressive -- his long, thin facial structure was nearly identical to Peter Cushing's unique face. And he could actually talk like Tarkin did, too -- so much so, they actually used the body double's own voice.

Damn. She was only 60. Really scary. We all think our parents will live to a nice age of 75 or 80, must be brutal to have one pass away that early.

Most of our parents don't do craploads of cocaine in their 30s and 40s.
Fisher became a wonderful advocate raising awareness of mental health and substance abuse issues, but there's an obvious explanation for why she may have been in worse physical shape than most 60-year-olds.
December 27th, 2016 at 1:53 PM ^
I didn't know about any of that. Can someone please explain specifically how drug use in ones 30s and 40s shortens their life expectancy? I believe it, just don't really get how.
December 27th, 2016 at 2:16 PM ^
She did a lot of coke. Because it's a stimulant, it made her heart do intense things periodically for years. This in turn makes it more likely to fail over time due to the unatural workload placed on it during the period of addiction.
At least that's how I understand it. I will definitely defer to someone who studies it for a better explanation.

cocaine can cause one to develop heart arrythmias or heart failure. Cocaine and other drugs could predispose her to a state where she was more likely to develop blood clots (a reasonable theory is she developed a DVT-leg blood clot-that travelled to her lungs-PE)
