RIP Carrie Fisher

I had the exact same thought. Nothing like having someone who hasn't experienced any real difficulty in life telling others that life is hard. Come back in twenty years, when you have had some real struggles in life, then preach to me.

Especially when he claims to not know a single David Bowie song. That's either breathtaking or (more likely) a bit of a troll.
But let's face it. Popular music celebrity skyrocketed about 50 years ago with artists who were largely in their 20s and 30s. Guess what? A bunch of them are going to die in the coming years. They're getting old, and most did not lead exemplary lifestyles. So the coming years are going to be similar, I think, to 2016 just because of the volume of musicians in their 70s and 80s now who will be passing away.
And more to the point, you'll get more of these deaths just due to the sheer volume of well-known musicians compared to a couple of generations ago. The spread of FM radio, album-oriented rock, multiple genre stations, R&B into the mainstream ... . That had a big multiplier effect on who was a musical star compared to the 1960s and before.
Bowie and Prince were hard to take in part because they were genre benders who had influence across an incredibly broad musical spectrum. So 2016 has been rough in that sense. That said, I suspect that we'll lose many more pop superstars in the next few years. So folks might as well get used to it, and celebrate the lives of the musicians that we're losing.
And the fact that Keith Richards is still alive and kicking! NEVER bet against Keith.*
*This is an opportunity for WD to reply "Keith Richards? The Rolling Stones? Couldn't name a single song by them!"

Honestly, I'm surprised there are as many rock stars as there are still alive . . . and still touring fergodsake.
I would have thought that their lifestyles would have killed them long ago. How are guys like Steven Tyler and Mick Jagger not 20 years dead by now?

People are going to be so disappointed when celebrities continue to die in 2017. RIP Leia.

You're not even going to give credit to the reddit poster you ripped that off of?
December 27th, 2016 at 1:19 PM ^
Somehow I doubt that Reddit post yesterday was the first time anyone had ever said that.
December 27th, 2016 at 1:40 PM ^
Those aren't even the same words.
December 27th, 2016 at 1:55 PM ^
You're right, should have phrased it differently. Very similar though.

You're right. I should have posted the Reddit link rather than commenting. Is there a way to give back my 9 upvotes?

Is there a way I can donate these to a needy mgoblogger? I feel like they've been stolen, not earned.

Now this is just ridiculous. I'm sitting on upwards of +14 that isn't rightfully mine. I'll go seek him out. I need to find a good non-profit to link in my profile now.

If 2016 is the worst year in humanity, my history teachers lied their asses off.
RIP to Fisher, in any event.

I'm guessing you are very young and/or didn't pay attention to history (or have a history lesson). There have been many years much worse than 2016 - look up any war, plague, famine, massacre, etc.
Your response has to be a joke. Family and friends pass all the time. My condolensces for her friends and family but her passing doesn't make this year one of the all time crappy years. It's called perspective.

Not at all presumptive. Trying to make sense how you could categorize this year (even with "trying") as one of the worst years ever. Frankly, I was simply asking how you could say that... either you don't know history or are too young to understand. I thought they were logical assumptions given your hyperbole.

Dude, stop posting until you:
(1) get your humor meter fixed, and
(2) get that stick surgically removed from so far up your ass.
The comment was obviously a throw-away joke.

Not quite. He insulted the poster snarling wolverine on his failure of reading comprehension. That doesn't sound like humor to me but a direct insult, which it was (hence "trying" in his response)
Insulting posters is not humor.

Globally, severe poverty and hunger are at some of the lowest levels in recorded history.
But some celebrities died, so OK, this year is "trying" hard to be the worst.

1347 thru 1352 were some tough years in Europe. I bet some celebrities died then too.

1914-1918 - that war still has effects that ring through to this day.
IIRC in one of the early battles the French lost 75K men in like 3 days. That in an era when national populations were much smaller.
And while these celebrity deaths are tragic, and I feel for their families, I also thank God every day I'm not in Aleppo or Northern Iraq.

Yeah, people given their age, have forgotten how terrible trench warfare was (and the introduction of mustard gas).
December 27th, 2016 at 2:41 PM ^
And the Brits lost 10,000 men dead in about 10 minutes on the first morning of the Somme.
When the generals heard of that failed first wave, they immediately sent another wave and lost 10,000 more men dead in another 10 minutes.
Lost more than a million more in a few months, to gain about 10 miles of territory.
Brutal disregard for soldier's lives back then. They were just "inventory" to be used up.
