Report: Tom Herman to Texas is ‘all but official’

Submitted by boliver46 on

Not sure how reliable Yardbarker is, so consider the source...

but something we've all speculated on - whether Tom Herman will get a big-time job - and where will it be?

Big rumor today is that Tom Herman to #Longhorns is "all but offical." Reliable sources saying what has been suspected for awhile now.

Short and sweet as I'm heading to a meeting - but...

DISCUSS!

***EDIT - seeing more than just Yardbarker reporting it - so guessing this puppy might have some legs.***

I wonder if that would explain Houston's shaky performances lately.  Has he been "Durkining" it lately?

They really should go ahead and make an announcement about Charlie Strong's future first, though.

They've been a solid program for awhile now though - Briles, Sumlin and Herman have all been successful there.  It seems to be one of the better Group of 5 jobs out there.

If I was PJ Fleck, it would still be a job I would like to get.  If Fleck's the real deal, he could use Houston as a stepping stone to a big time job.

Posted this a while ago, but reposting since it seems appropriate: I continue to find it both sad and hilarious that everyone raves about Herman despite the fact he is still in his second year of head coaching - anywhere. He inherited a good situation at Houston and is getting effusive praise for using it in a mostly competent manner (despite getting blown out by a two loss team he mocked over the summer). If I were in the position to hire a new head coach at a prime school, I would prefer someone who has demonstrated success through at least a full recruiting cycle - ideally someone who has brought a team through a down cycle and back to prominence.

It's no secret in these parts that Claeys is in the middle of a one-year audition to prove that he's up to the job.  The results so far have not been encouraging (they barely beat Rutgers last week, for goodness sake!).  But with the incredibly weak schedule they have this year, I suppose winning 2 of the next 5 games and finishing 4-5 in the BIG and 7-5 overall might give him another year.

.... The answer with Claeys may end up with recruiting.  Its proving out to be a productive Freshman class this year but the 2017 recruiting looks pretty poor so far.

Now I will say, I'd be very surprised if he were dropped after one year.

it's likely Claeys gets at least one more season. If he does get axed, though, the Gopher HC job is (IMO) a much better one than Purdue. I can see PJ Fleck being successful there much quicker than at Purdue. Minnesota is the only Power 5 job in that state, while the Boilers lag behind both ND and IU right now in Indiana, with Harbaugh plucking nearly all the best kids out of that talent-starved state.

OK, that list includes Bobby Petrino and............???

Chris Peterson moving on from UDub already after staying at Boise so many years? Doubtful...

Jim McElwain? Is Texas an upward move from Fla?

Jimbo Fisher? " " " "FSU?

I'd nominate Mike MacIntyre, but would you seriously take him over Herman?

Sonny Dykes, if you've got the next Don Brown ready to join him in Austin, whoever that might be?

Chip Kelly will be heading back to college I believe, but more likely to return to Ore than to Austin? I believe so.

I do not know where all these great candidates that have all those qualifications you list are coming from?

He's in a good spot as the only major school in a decent talent producing state. (Navy doesn't look to keep the local talent). He's right next to DC which also produces a lot of talent and doesn't have a local power to compete with. There's additional talent in nearby PA and VA, although there is a lot of local competition for them. I expect him to build MD into a national power within 6 years.

The downside is he'll be in the B1G East, behind UM and OSU perenially and competing with a PSU that I expect will also be a national power again within the next few years. MSU as the 5th best team in the division will make it possibly the toughest division in CFB, competing with the SEC West.

I feel like if he let players and/or staff know, that would've leaked by now. Especially players. 110 guys all had the emotional maturity to not fire off a tweet?

Telling the coaches wouldn't be as big of a deal since he'd likely take many of them with him.

As we've seen with players, Social Media can be a major pain point.

I guess this would speak more to the coaches taking the foot off the gas and/or preparation is lacking.

Ugh.

I would doubt he has told anyone, except maybe a very small number of extremely close confindants.  However, that doesn't meant that his demeanor hasn't changed and others are picking up on it even if only sub-consciously.

No way he tells any coaches, save for a VERY close confidant.  They'll talk amongst themselves about who he's taking, and who he's not taking.  This is how you spell animosity...

I would guess that he's tried to keep it a secret from his players, but this would affect his job performance all the same.  If he's been in negotiations with Texas, that's got to be distracting to him when he's supposed to be preparing for Navy, SMU, etc.  And players can sense when their coach is "off".

to the Big XII. Herman leaving became the inevitable next step. It's hard not to feel for their fanbase. They've gone from being a contender on the rise, looking forward to annual games with Texas and Oklahoma, to an above average Group of 5 team in just a few weeks.

A lot of players, coaches, and admins seem to believe that Dantonio intends to retire in a few years as a Spartan. I would be incredibly surprised to see Dantonio leave MSU I actually think Fleck's best bet would be to wait a year and see if MSU's bad season leads Dantonio into an early retirement, then maybe Fleck can take over Sparty, stay in state and such, unless they manage to bring back Narduzzi or something

Oh I am sure he's retiring soon. Before he ends up with a losing record against UM anyways.

He sees they are going to be back to 8-4/7-5 every year and he can retire and live out his days and go down in history as a winning coach against UM.

He'll never pay for a meal in E. Landfill again.
