Rank your Fanhood.

Submitted by Smoothitron on

I thought it might be interesting to see how people weigh their loyalties to the various teams they follow.

If you want something a little more concrete, rank the teams you follow in order of how happy you would be if they won a championship.  I'm thinking specifically pro and college big 4 sports teams, but feel free to throw in national teams or non-revenue sports teams as well if that's your bag.

For me:

1.  Michigan Basketball

Spending the late 90s and early 00s as the only UM basketball fan in my school was tough, but that makes the current success that much better.

2a. Indiana Pacers

Indiana kid's gonna Indiana.  I spend about 5 minutes as part of my morning routine seething about the fact Reggie Miller(and Austin Croshere) never got a ring, but I have that slight disdain for pro sports holding be back from calling them #2 alone.

2b. Michigan Football

I had the great pleasure of getting into sports right after UM won the football title in 97, so I haven't gotten the good pleasure of enjoying a championship as it happened.

4. Indianapolis Colts

Of course the team I care least about is the only one that has won a championship while I've been following them.  All hail St. Peyton.  All hail St. Andrew.

5. Any team representing the USA in international competition.

U-S-A, U-S-A!!!

Share yours so that I know who to downvote reflexively if you like teams that I don't.

I was raised on Michigan sports, but 17 years in Starkville with 11 years of teaching has led to an eventual change in top loyalty. I have 20 current or former students on the Mississippi State Football 2-deep and have a 1.5 mile golf cart ride to the stadium to see the guys I know play Alabama, LSU, and Ole Miss.

Air Force(Football, Basketball, Hockey) - went there for undergrad

Michigan(Football, Basketball, Hockey) - went here for grad school

UCLA(Football, Basketball, Baseball) - raised a Bruins fan

Dodgers - raised a Dodger fan

Tottenham Hotspur - like soccer and wanted an EPL team and Spurs history spoke to me. Plus Red is naughty.

Tigers - figure I can root for an AL team and lived in Michigan for six years

Lakers - raised a Lakers fan

Lions - stopped following the NFL when I was stationed in Japan, when I came back the Lions became the home town team.

USMNT -  USA USA USA!

Red Wings - never really had hometown team and then I moved to Michigan.

Probably too long a list but I love sports.  Although to be honest I really follow.college, the EPL, and baseball and the rest are more of a notice when there is time kind of a deal.

They have a long and pretty illustrious history and in the EPL they've been good with a chance to break through but just can't buy whoever the hell they want. Makes them a more interesting follow than the Big Five, plus this way I don't feel like a soul-less band wagoner(as I assume any fan of the big five must feel like). I've been following them since the 2006/2007 season, but it's been more fun than following a team led by a Frenchman who keeps mysteriously being struck blind when one of his players does something egregious.

Spurs spent more than Arsenal  the last 2 seasons combined, even with Sanchez and Ozil added. You can't use the "we don't spend" excuse. Just giving you a  friendly ribbing, though. And you can't be soulless for choosing a team because of Bergkamp, can ya? The man was a magician. Had to root for the Gunners, as an 8 year-old, after seing Dennis.

I have a few tiers of fandom.  Teams within are ranked by the "if both teams were hypothetically playing at the same time, which game would I watch" measure.

The "I live and die by games" tier

Michigan Football

Michigan Basketball

The "I care about the games, but it doesn't ruin my day if they lose unless it's the playoffs" tier (i.e. my main team in the 4 pro leagues)

Detroit Red Wings

Minnesota Vikings

Chicago Cubs

Detroit Pistons

The "Oh cool, the ___ won" tier (i.e. the other random teams I cheer for)

Detroit Tigers

San Diego Chargers

San Diego Padres

Oklahoma City Thunder

1) Michigan football, basketball, and softball. USMNT for important games

2) Cincinnati Reds, I have to admit, if Tiger gets in contention again, he will be here (if not in #1), random odd sport guy: recently it has been Usain Bolt, UM hockey in the NCAA

3) Bengals, most other UM teams, Miami (NTM) teams

I have another category that is admittedly too big, and often just as passionate. That's the anti-version of categories 1 and 2. Those are the 'anybody playing.....' teams.

1) OSU football, MSU basketball
2) MSU football, Steelers, Browns, Chicago Cubs, LeBron's team
