Randy Shannon to Interview with UT
Apparently, Randy Shannon has intereviewed with and was considering a job with Kentucky. That seemes strange. Why go to a school that won't be able to recruit and hasn't been able to compete? As a defensive coordinator?
With Muschamp now at Florida, apparently he has interest in becoming the Texas DC. This may make some sense for Shannon. I suppose it makes some sense for UT as well, coming off a horrible season.
Where does Michigan fit in? Has Calvin Magee and Rodriguez and/or Brandon already spoken with Chuck Heater? Have they already spoken to Shannon and did he decline interest based on Rodriguez tenuous tenure?
"When" Rodriguez is kept on, I don't see any way for Robinson to continue without Ann Arbor Torch and Pitchfork having a record setting day of sales.

was close to going to UT maybe five years ago as DC. I think this will happen.
December 13th, 2010 at 2:26 PM ^
Of how waiting till after the new year is a problem, if say, we want a new DC on staff here? Hold that timeline Dave!
December 13th, 2010 at 2:37 PM ^
My thoughts exactly.
December 13th, 2010 at 4:21 PM ^
Hope you don't mind me squeezing in here. Couldn't agree more. A small part of me thinks that maybe he enjoys the attention. The other part fears that he is going to blow up what took 3 years to finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. The part that is left realizes this is all speculation and wish he would just let me know what is going on. Oh well.
December 13th, 2010 at 4:45 PM ^
Let me first say that I think he knows what he's going to do. I don't buy the fact that he is waiting to evaluate. If he is, then he probably needs to rethink this career. My worry is that if he does keep RR, he has handicapped him by hurting recruiting and leaving canidates out there instead of just making a decision.
December 13th, 2010 at 2:37 PM ^
My thoughts exactly.
December 13th, 2010 at 2:55 PM ^
My thoughts exactly too!
December 13th, 2010 at 2:42 PM ^
Unless he isn't actually "waiting" at all.
December 13th, 2010 at 3:02 PM ^
Will Muschamp was making ~$1mill a year. GERG has been settling for $275k. UM doesn't pay coordinators like they do in the SEC and parts of the B12. The DC at UK made $315,100.
UM will not likely be in the discussion for guys that might command that kind of pay. You know, the candidates that everyone is upset that we're not in the discussion for. Maybe that will change with DB, but I think it's hamstrung the past couple hires.
December 13th, 2010 at 4:14 PM ^
My understanding was that Muschamp was being paid that crazy high number because he was the "coach-in-waiting" to succeed Mack Brown. Guess that didn't work out so well for Texas...
But yeah, agree with your point. A high-quality DC will cost some money.
December 13th, 2010 at 4:56 PM ^
I don't think they will pay Shannon that much ($900K-$1M) but I think he is looking for more than $275K a year as well.
It would be great for recruiting in Florida or whichever program he picks.
RR on offense and RS on defense is just too good to consider.
December 13th, 2010 at 4:58 PM ^
Shannon, prior to dismissal, had signed an extension...I wonder what amount he was paid out (thus softening the blow substantially in terms of his latent salary expectations I am sure.
December 13th, 2010 at 2:29 PM ^
He is a class act, and UT would be a good place for him
December 13th, 2010 at 2:33 PM ^
I really wanted Shannon or at least the possibility Shannon coming. I love the way he coaches defense. You still need players, but he stops my top pet peeve on defense.............cushion. He is always up in the WR's face.
December 13th, 2010 at 2:42 PM ^
I am looking forward to the day when Michigan fans, who claim to be so knowledgeable about football, can spell our offensive coordinator's damn name correctly.
It's "Calvin Magee."
December 13th, 2010 at 2:49 PM ^
Pretty high expectations, there, Magnus.
Still, amen.
December 13th, 2010 at 3:08 PM ^
McGee vs MaGee gets you that upset? Life must be tough for you Magnus.
December 13th, 2010 at 4:49 PM ^
The board has reached a level of stupid that is difficult to tolerate.
The OP's misnomer is pretty innocent but subtle miscues aren't getting the benefit of the doubt anymore thanks to the degeneration of average post quality.
December 13th, 2010 at 3:12 PM ^
because s/he spelled his name wrong means they don't know anything about football. Stop being a jerk dude.
December 13th, 2010 at 3:41 PM ^
Done.
December 13th, 2010 at 4:06 PM ^
OC? Hell, people are still struggling with the proper spelling of Coach Rodriguez's name; you may want to lower your expectations, unless you enjoy disappointment.
It's like they enjoy the letter 'q' or something.
December 13th, 2010 at 4:56 PM ^
That god damn Robgribez better do a better job in the bowl this year. His DC Rogbinsen has been pretty UNAPPECTABLE as well.
December 13th, 2010 at 2:44 PM ^
you meant tu
December 13th, 2010 at 3:11 PM ^
University of Texas at Austin = UT. I haven't heard that Shannon is interested in Tulane, but maybe he is.
December 13th, 2010 at 5:01 PM ^
I don't know if I would be using the tu form with Randy Shannon. He deserves all the respect of the usted form, I think.
December 13th, 2010 at 3:00 PM ^
I don't know what will happen in the future, but it is not certain what will happen to Greg Robinson. AATP won't decide who will be the defensive coordinator. Dave Brandon and Rich Rodriguez will.
December 13th, 2010 at 3:10 PM ^
Robinson SHOULD be replaced. However conventional wisdom here and elsewhere have Robinson moving on. Brandon commented on the Groban song as "it was different". What do you think his comment would be on the fuzzy wolverine? As you and "we" all know, the discontent with coaching staff is alarming. I believe that Brandon will "force" a change on defense for several reasons, including to placate a large poriton of the fanbase. The substantive reasons to do it, include the inability of the D staff to decide on and plan a scheme (43 or 335) and to run it correctly. The biggest reason is that the defense (at least until the first half of the OSU game) showed no signs of improvement. So,yeah, if the staff comes back exactly as is (which won't happen) then torch and pitchfork customers may stop buying tickets and suites.
December 13th, 2010 at 3:13 PM ^
I thought that is where he'd go if he went back to a DC role.
Mack Brown needs top-flight guys to make him look good.
December 13th, 2010 at 3:29 PM ^
as our DC next year. He can coach a defense. Good luck where ever he goes though, guy is a class act!
December 13th, 2010 at 3:55 PM ^
what are the chances of him defecting to Florida or Texas as an OC? Muschamp needs a spread guy to run the O down there and Mack Brown just got rid of his OC. Not to be negative, but with the "twisting in then wind" for the next 20 days, this staff must be thinking aout themselves as well. If that were to happen, we'd have dags and cats living together, mass hysteria, real wrath of God type stuff.
If DB really is going to "wait" until after Jan.1 to make any decisions, theremight not be a staff to hold onto or a new coach to get if he goes the other way.
December 13th, 2010 at 6:02 PM ^
Wait, McGee interviewed somewhere? This was confirmed and not wild speculation based on him being somewhere after Meyer quit?
December 13th, 2010 at 6:44 PM ^
I thought wild speculation was considered confirmation around here.
No?
