That over the head punt was justice for calling it a roughing the kicker on the previous punt
September 13th, 2015 at 2:42 PM ^
But damn, our special team guys got there in a hurry, the kid barely had a chacne too look up after grabbing the ball, and two guys were already there tackiing him. I am sure he did not expect them to be there so soon.
September 13th, 2015 at 5:11 PM ^
Just kick the ball through the end zone.
September 13th, 2015 at 7:31 PM ^
That would be the correct choice and I imagine many punters are thinking that if they're punting inside their own 20.
However, I don't blame the punter for being a little surprised. How many times do you see a snap go 50 yards over your head? He was probably freaking out
September 13th, 2015 at 12:49 PM ^
Not sure why these look like they're on fast-forward. Will modify if I can figure it out.

Peppers is fast but not that fast!
September 13th, 2015 at 1:07 PM ^
Actually, he IS that fast. Notice that he was 10 yards away at the time the ball was thrown, and he still managed to close the gap and breakup the catch.

I left it out since everyone has already seen it, and Ace will no doubt include it in one fram at a time on Monday.

wish i could find one that included him throwing his play sheets.. anyone seen one?

that was a nice shot

more possible the refs called it correctly.
For the record, Harbaugh was right and wrong. According to the 2015 NCAA football rules and interpretations book, a punter "loses his roughing or running-into protection by carrying the ball outside the tackle box." So, Harbaugh had a point. However, the rules also state that if a punter "moves laterally two or three steps to recover a faulty snap, or recovers a snap that went over his head and then kicks the ball" ... "does not automatically lose his protection in either case unless he carries the ball outside the tackle box."
I still think the call was bad because after he caught the ball he took several more steps to kick the ball. The rule seems to contradict itself as far as if these steps take him out of the tackle box or if it's normal kicking motion.

I don't know if they didn't print something that clarifies this or if there is no explanation. The punter took several steps after catching the ball which is technically part of his kicking motion and took him further out of the box. I don't think it should be a penalty but the rule should be clarified based on Austrailian style kickers.
September 13th, 2015 at 2:14 PM ^
Agree. That phrase isn't helful. The only reason I can think of for it to be there is if it was intended to make the rule more ambiguous in order to give the refs some discretion in applying it based on the specifics of the play.
September 13th, 2015 at 2:18 PM ^
field the punt then take steps straight ahead to punt the ball. In this case you have a guy who is taking additional steps to the side after the ball is caught to kick the ball but he is already outside the tackle box. You could really call it either way. It's his normal kicking motion so maybe he should be protected but he is also a substantial ways out of the box and towards the sideline. I think you are asking a lot for the receiving team to hold up hitting the kicker at that point. You're talking about the posibiity of the rusher never having seen the bad snap in the first place.

The rule doesn't contradict itself. Read it again. He was outside the tackle box - he loses the automatic protection.

In that view it looks like it hit the head linesman in the back and rebounded. That doesn't seem physically possible since the linesman is 10' in front of Harbaugh. Did he use Flubber on his notebook?

Excuse!

When things were going well, as in that second GIF which cuts away just as you get the expression on Harbaugh's face following that nice power run into the endzone, his face and fist pump were great to see as well. He's in that game on every level that he can be and it is refreshing to see - it has been a long time.

Can someone gif the Rudock fumble? I could have sworn his knee quickly hit the ground before the ball came out but I'd have to slow it down to see.
September 13th, 2015 at 3:32 PM ^
The ball popped out of his hands a little bit right as he got hit, he tried catching it again as his legs hit the ground which made it look like he still had possesion but he wasn't able to re-secure it and it rolled away.

September 13th, 2015 at 5:12 PM ^
Looks like he's for real. You "get it" watching the game yesterday - multiple tight ends able to block and move in space. It's like having 250+ lb RBs only running with momentum when they catch the ball - woe to those who try to stop them. Want to see the UFR on Butt, Bunting and Williams this week.
