FWIW, getting anything in on that thread takes an act of god. Us common folk have a thread going on the message board.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:31 PM ^
That's my point. I'd like to see everyone's comments in real time on the liveblog, not just mods who think everything they say is hilarious. I don't want to have to refresh the open thread every second to see what people are saying.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:33 PM ^
That is never going to happen. You do not know the shit that gets filtered out.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:39 PM ^
I'd prefer a little shit if it means I get to see what everyone's thinking. I honestly don't like how the mods get to say anything they like, funny or not, insightful or not, while the plebs are not allowed a voice. At least make it so that all the mods don't clog everything with their "insights". I appreciate the fact that MGoBlog is policed by it's own members, and it's a pretty intellectual group of people. I'd like to hear those peoples' opinions.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:43 PM ^
Personally, I'd just like to see the moderating applied to everyone. Or at least have the mods restrain themselves from taking shots at individual commenters (e.g., Geaux_Blue being a jerk to mrex and various others) in exchange for being the gatekeepers.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:49 PM ^
I agree. Seriously mods, stop making fun of people if you don't let them respond.
Also, I think that my sarcasm was obvious. :)
November 5th, 2011 at 3:49 PM ^
the #occupymrex comment was hilarious
November 5th, 2011 at 3:45 PM ^
....that most of the time, what I am thinking is not terribly interesting. For example, during the game:
"Why does my daughter want to play 'The Ladybug Game' only when we're on offense?"
"Remember when Remy Hamilton made FGs from the parking lot at Briarwood?"
"That stupid mountain ash tree is going to be dead soon. Damn ash borer beetles."
That's just in between actual thoughts about the game itself.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:45 PM ^
As someone that has modded before, it's not a little shit. It's a lot of shit coming faster than you can read it with a few worthwhile comments hidden in the middle. And most of the worthwhile comments are repeated by ten different people.
If every comment was posted, it would be an unreadable mess. But I guess at least we wouldn't have people bitching about how their unique* insightful** comment didn't get posted.
[*] It wasn't unique
[**] It wasn't insightful
November 5th, 2011 at 3:46 PM ^
Truly vile things get posted and I'm not making the front page of the site a torrent of unmoderated id. If you don't like the liveblogs, don't participate. There is no way to parse all the things that get posted in a way that pleases everyone.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:55 PM ^
It's not my participation that I'm disappointed in...it's the number of other members that I would like to hear from. This is your website, and you can run it how you want; I'm just saying it's annoying when our mods' comments are barely more insightful than those that are being filtered out.
Geaux_Blue ueber alles.
November 5th, 2011 at 4:08 PM ^
We WEREN'T supposed to publish unmoderated id?
My bad.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:39 PM ^
Brian, half the comments allowed were people complaining that normal comments were going through, or complaining about how bad the mods were. Then they say "say something interesting not plain" but they let comments like "Nice Play!" in. I don't know what was less consistent the refs or the liveblog mods..
November 5th, 2011 at 3:51 PM ^
half gave up because they didn't like what the other half were allowing through or stopped caring. that's about it.
November 5th, 2011 at 6:46 PM ^
you can't read the comments and they don't scroll so you're stuck looking at old crap and by the time you click to refresh, things have already moved on, I hardly posted anything or approved anything, too busy wondering what the fuck was wrong with borges.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:39 PM ^
If it isn't filtered, the liveblog would move faster than you can read. You do realize there are upwards of 5000 people on the liveblog during games, right?
November 5th, 2011 at 7:57 PM ^
Yeah, it would make reading it impossible.
For some perspective, Midnight Maize does liveblogs almost every night, and all of the commenters are auto-approved.
Back when myself, Shredder, Dark Blue, CMR, SCS, Hulk, Seth, MGoJen, Irish, OSD and a few others would liveblog it was almost impossible to catch every comment, and that's 10ish people, not 5000.
November 5th, 2011 at 4:28 PM ^
Agreed i sent in probably 30 comments. None got posted
November 5th, 2011 at 5:06 PM ^
I have up on the live chat a few games ago. Nonsense gets through repeatedly yet seemingly it's impossible for most of us to get comments past the mods. Not worth the headache.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:38 PM ^
I was like 0/10 on comment submissions. Everyone and everything sucks.
November 5th, 2011 at 4:22 PM ^
You just have to be funnier. Or just make fun of pbp or Geaux_Blue paying his dues through sexual favors
November 5th, 2011 at 4:25 PM ^
and guess who let all those comments through. blah.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:39 PM ^
I actually don't mind the fact that it is a moderated liveblog. Early in this game, for example, it would have been really hard to get through 1,000 folks panicking early, for starters. I can only imagine the liveblog blowing up on TDs and big stops and so forth too. It would difficult to have any coherent discussion too, or catch PBP as he descends into a Dylan Thomas-esque state of drunkenness.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:40 PM ^
There's just not a good way to deal with gameday threads. Lots of good comments get purged. I know it, I don't post stupid comments and nothing gets posted. I'm not complaining because I realize how many there are to filter.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:41 PM ^
I hear La Paz is great in November...
seriously dude, who cares if your post isn't visible? #firstworldproblems
November 5th, 2011 at 3:42 PM ^
I don't care about my posts. I want to see what everyone else is saying.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:49 PM ^
that would never happen. the sheer genius you were missing out on from posters consisted of ignorance towards football, inappropriate PSU jokes, mockery of other users, "GAH!" "OH!" "NO!" "WOO!" and ripping on Spielman. that's it. ask anyone who has moderated one of those.
if my commentary is unwanted, i can just not do it. no skin off of my nose. but to act like there's some sort of abuse system where we're gaining sheer joy by suppressing the knowing masses and putting up fart jokes is stupid.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:55 PM ^
If by "commentary" you mean your attempts at humor and your dumb banter with other mods that you think is so insightful, then yes, it is unwanted.
November 5th, 2011 at 4:23 PM ^
You do not want to know what everyone else is thinking.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:44 PM ^
There's a difference between moderation and let next to zero comments in. There were times where two plays would happen and the only one who got a comment in is play-by-play. Of course we need moderation. Put be consistent and dont let every comment that has a damn "Z" at the end in....
EDIT: It's a joke that we have to make a thread about this when Michigan just lost a game very winnable.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:42 PM ^
I actually have to agree, Geaux_Blue is unbearably annoying in the liveblogs. He just makes dumb "Hurr everybody look at me I'm soooo funny" jokes that have nothing to do with the game.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:46 PM ^
5/10 times the moderator's comments are directed to sum up or rebuke what 90% of the people are saying that's not being approved
3/10 times the moderator is saying what everyone else is saying
1/10 a moderator is saying something they feel like saying and abusing their auto-approve status
1/10 is moderator posting something negative about the moderators
The honest fact is I came to enjoy that game less because of the sheer stupidity being submitted that I helped wade through.
There is no poaching of 'specific people' and letting them through. There is no favoritism. It's a long, scrolling chaotic mess of people saying stupid things. The sheer amount of trolling is absurd. The amount of people trolling unwittingly because they're either a) drinking or b) emotionally incapable is absurd. The reason 'interesting things' were asked for is because the point of a Liveblog is to gather people's facts and ideas, not post 500 "PUT DEVIN IN, DENARD SUCKS!"
At one point I noted that people would not react half as badly on a Liveblog as they do if they didn't assume because Iowa lost to Minnesota, Michigan would destroy them and act accordingly throughout the week.
I would love to know what your username was in the chat, though, to know what hard-hitting or even mildly interesting commentary you were being kept from sharing.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:50 PM ^
Then if you can't enjoy the game, don't be a mod? That doesn't excuse your badgering of other people in the liveblog, imo.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:52 PM ^
link plz. if i was badgering people, i'd love to see where so i could avoid doing it. the only self-righteousness i trumped up was at having to filter through 900 "Hoke/Borges/Denard sucks" comments to get to one "the TE was wide open on that but the LG missed a block" comment
November 5th, 2011 at 4:25 PM ^
Uhh. You might have badgerd, but who cares. It is just a live blog. The OP is asking for too much when it comes to this with the amount of readers.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:52 PM ^
"1/10 a moderator is saying something they feel like saying and abusing their auto-approve status"
What a joke.. Make fun of Mrex after a perfectly normal comment, :I remember when I was 19", negative comment after negative comment...
November 5th, 2011 at 3:53 PM ^
the "I remember when I was 19" was about the guy who made 5-7 comments demanding a poll be made about what alcohol in his house he should drink.
November 5th, 2011 at 4:01 PM ^
Okay.... why write a vague comment about that if no one can see it? You said you post normal post that informative...

Last word from me in this thread: I'm not going to unmoderate the liveblog, but if mods are being rude send me a time to look at in the liveblog and I'll look at it.
November 5th, 2011 at 4:32 PM ^
People take what the mods say too seriously. Add losing and people get sent over the edge if their comments aren't approved.
I think the large amounts of stupid posts can drive the mods to become rude. I think that is part of the liveblog experience. Sometime the mods have to be rude to keep the idiots in check.
November 5th, 2011 at 4:39 PM ^
I don't think you should either. I enjoy the liveblog, and I honestly don't know how the mods deal with everything coming at them so fast. A few of my posts get through, but most don't. I think they do a great job overall, and if their a tad rude to some idiots, I cut them some slack...they're Michigan fans and they're pissed about the game too.
Everyone pouting that their posts don't get through probably has a higher opinion of their own comments than they should.
November 5th, 2011 at 4:56 PM ^
There are plenty of both paid and free blog platforms, and it isn't all that difficult to get a liveblog going on your own blog. Maybe, to cut down on the 5000, those who want their voices heard could do their own liveblogs and tell everyone where they are going to be in one "alternate liveblogs" thread.
It would make the mgoblog more manageable for Brian while allowing those who feel trodden upon to make their voices heard in a smaller, more interactive chat. Be careful what you ask for, though: even a small liveblog can be a total bitch to try and moderate. They work best with everyone unmoderated, but even one or two bad apples can screw it up.
Imagine trying to do this with 5000 people.
November 5th, 2011 at 6:29 PM ^
Sort of reminds me of the old AOL format (the 10% of chats that didn't start with A/S/L), where the upper limit on who could join was about 30 people and there were boards and discussions on just about everything.
I actually used to help moderate one of the boards on AOL years ago for a subheading of a certain arena of topics that are taboo here. There were about two or three major shitfests each week, with maybe 40 or 50 people getting "TOSed" (anyone remember that term?). It was rough.
I support the mods - I understand the pain, but not on the scale they face here.

i will not be hosting them anymore because i don't want to be a distraction to people or from their enjoyment of mgoservices. i'm sorry if i've offended you and assure you that 95% of the time my comments were sarcastic or intended to uplift rather than drag down. feel free to check them out from here on out (I haven't even been doing them this year either!)
November 5th, 2011 at 4:00 PM ^
I don't think you guys realize how many comments there are. Today's game had 11,603 comments submitted. The Michigan State game had 13,462. Several people have said to "be consistent". There is no way that can happen. After a big play, there are up to 100 comments posted within 30 seconds. I will probably read about 10 and randomly pick 2 in order to sum up the general reaction.
In the second quarter, my tv broke and I didn't mod again until after halftime. Each moderator has different policies. Geaux tried to lessen the sheer amount of comments that get posted and people complain about that. I try to post some comments that sum up the mood of the majority and people complain about that.
A huge amount of comments fall into these categories.
-Fire Coach X
-Player Y Sucks
-Woohoo!
-Damnit
-Drinking game related stuff
-People complaining about why their comments didn't get posted and other comments did
I assure you that we are not getting off by seeing our fake names on a screen.
November 5th, 2011 at 4:05 PM ^
screwed if you do, screwed if you don't situation. try to bring levity, people get cranky. your outlining of content control pretty much sums it up. i posted less than 90 times in a 3 hour game i was helping watch. it's just dumb. this site has gotten way less fun because it's becoming people who seem to only be happy when UM is sliding and they can get loud.
November 5th, 2011 at 4:59 PM ^
worry about today to make too a big deal out of this but I get where the OP is coming from.
Comments certainly need to be filtered. With that said, it appeared today that some of the mods were more focused on posting themselves, including quite a bit of off topic chatter, instead of allowing more comments through.
That's my $0.02. Back to kicking the cat......
November 5th, 2011 at 4:35 PM ^
90 times really? Us normal folk are lucky to get one post in out of 30
