That was an "investigate the refs to see if they're gambling on this game" kind of call
November 20th, 2020 at 11:14 PM ^
Supposedly this is the angle the ref saw:

Eh. He did fully extend his arm. Didn't really look like it slowed the DB down, but that's exactly the kind of thing the refs look out for. It was iffy, but I feel like refs don't call offensive PI enough in general.
Didn't Minnesota get screwed on a PI a couple drives before on 3rd down and later resulted in a Purdue TD? My stream lagged so I missed it but it sounded like the announcers disagreed with the call.
November 20th, 2020 at 11:04 PM ^
Ooh I dunno about that I started watching end of second quarter
November 21st, 2020 at 11:59 AM ^
well, you missed it. that bad PI call against minny on 3rd and long near midfield in the 4Q led to purdue's final touchdown.
November 20th, 2020 at 11:04 PM ^
If that's an OPI then there should be OPI on every play because WRs does that kind of shit nearly every single time
November 20th, 2020 at 11:48 PM ^
That's my point...
November 20th, 2020 at 11:59 PM ^
Correct. That shit has long been annoying to watch and would be great to see it change. The receiver can push off and get away with quite a bit (sure, some egregious stuff gets flagged every now and then) but when a defender gets seen doing some contact that may or may not exactly affect the ability for the receiver to catch the ball it gets flagged more times than not. Shit has ruined the game for me.
November 21st, 2020 at 7:40 AM ^
Exactly. When something positive happens for your team, the first thing you think of: "Where's the flag?".
The refs make the game about themselves way too often. When they can call a penalty on every single play for some minor infraction, it just wrecks the game. Basketball is even worse. Hockey is not much better. Baseball is way better, but I would be in favor of an electronic strike zone. MMA is the best, refs rarely ruin the match.
November 21st, 2020 at 9:16 AM ^
So true, WRs and blocking OL 3+ yards deep are an (almost) every down occurrence. But let a good DE get tackled by the OT... Crickets.
November 20th, 2020 at 11:02 PM ^
I want to know what Brohm was saying to the refs.
November 20th, 2020 at 11:06 PM ^
If I were him, I probably would've been ejected. If that was Michigan I would be soooooo pissed.
November 20th, 2020 at 11:52 PM ^
I read his lips, he was saying "that was a shit call, it's fucking bullshit"
He said that more than once too.
November 21st, 2020 at 9:17 AM ^
I suspect one didn't need to be a certified lip-reader to see that...
November 20th, 2020 at 11:06 PM ^
As someone who had Purdue -2.5, I agree, it was a peepee call.
November 20th, 2020 at 11:26 PM ^
Same here. Cut some losses at halftime by taking the 2H O33.
November 20th, 2020 at 11:07 PM ^
Jeff Brohm yelled at the ref for about eight minutes after. I can't wait for his press conference.
November 20th, 2020 at 11:07 PM ^
I cant believe Fleck survived that game after his dumbass decision to go for it on 4th and 1 at his own 30. And yes he did a wildcat play to get stuffed as well. Purdue missed 2 chip shot fg's to lose this game. And that absolutely was not opi.
November 21st, 2020 at 7:44 AM ^
The wildcat doesn't bug me, because the logic with gaining an extra blocker makes sense, if everyone blocks who they are supposed to block. The Saints do it all the time with Taysom Hill, and Sean Payton is a genius.
November 20th, 2020 at 11:08 PM ^
Looked like a shit call to me. Too many games swing on calls like this.
November 20th, 2020 at 11:08 PM ^
That was a travesty, and a reminder that you never bet against the teams that did not want to play this year. That call was no accident.
A really bad beat if you took Purdue -3
November 20th, 2020 at 11:10 PM ^
There is a video going around that shows the arm extension that gives him an extra half step separation. I don’t think it is as bad as people are making it
November 20th, 2020 at 11:19 PM ^
Yep, there is a side angle that shows the extension that seemed to result in a minor advantage for the Purdue player. Still pretty weak sauce. But until I saw that angle I was very confused.
November 21st, 2020 at 9:22 AM ^
I saw that angle and will agree that it's a callable play. However. During any other part of the game, that IS NOT called OPI. More likely, the DB will get flagged in the middle of the game for something that weak. That is not the place to call such ticky-tack bullshit. The ref was super anxious to watch for anything, and he blew the no-call that is not called at any other time in the game.
Call the game the same way throughout.
November 20th, 2020 at 11:11 PM ^
Oh and I wish like hell that we would use Corum and Henning like Purdue does Moore.
November 20th, 2020 at 11:26 PM ^
I guess, if you want to like move the ball and score and stuff.
November 21st, 2020 at 10:14 AM ^
It would make sense (considering we have like 1 receiver over 6'2 in Cornelius Johnson) to get your speed guys in situations to let them make plays and get some YAC but it appears we've taken the approach of trying something once a game and making sure we run up the middle into a stacked box to make sure we get 3rd and long.
November 20th, 2020 at 11:21 PM ^
It's funny when it happens to someone else's team.
November 20th, 2020 at 11:23 PM ^
Horrible
November 20th, 2020 at 11:24 PM ^
Officiating in sports has been broken for awhile and football is no differen
My personal favorite quirk is how reviews work, in which a referee can be out of position for a bang-bang play and make a random guess immediately after the play (because they're required to). Then the play is reviewed from several different angles, in slo mo, and with time to process the play, only for the original call to stand if the play doesn't meet the arbitrary requirement of "indisputable evidence" to the contrary. Make no mistake, the referree is GUESSING about the outcome of the play because no human being can triangulate the location of a yard line on the field, the ball, and a specific part of a player's body touching the ground in real time. Further, if no human being can do that, neither can a fucking 60 year old man or John O'Neil do it. WE HAVE THE FUCKING TECHNOLOGY, GET THE CALL RIGHT AND STOP TRYING TO SAVE FACE FOR THE OFFICIALS. Entire outcomes of games are being decided on by a guess, and tonight was no exception
November 21st, 2020 at 9:27 AM ^
WE HAVE THE FUCKING TECHNOLOGY, GET THE CALL RIGHT AND STOP TRYING TO SAVE FACE FOR THE OFFICIALS
How do you see technology solving the problem? Serious question. What “technology” is going to (for example) spot a football more correctly? A micro-chip in the ball? You’d have to have at least 6 to cover every direction the ball would have to be at when the player advances. And how does technology address determining whether a knee or forearm or other body part had made contact with the playing surface?
Outside of replay, “technology” has no place In officiating.

I don't know how O'neil even gets his shoes on in the morning.
November 20th, 2020 at 11:30 PM ^
Who gives a fuck.
I'm sure the BTN crew will say how terrible the call was.
The same fucks who had no issue with the 2016 Ohio State game reffing.
November 20th, 2020 at 11:45 PM ^
That call SHOULD be called every single fucking time like it is (mostly) on the defense. But it's not and it's a pretty crummy and oddly specific time to actually throw a flag.
November 20th, 2020 at 11:47 PM ^
Atrociously atrocious

Both teams have better QB play than Michigan
November 21st, 2020 at 11:39 AM ^
Who doesn’t? Tulane’s 3rd stringer is better than anyone Michigan has.
November 21st, 2020 at 12:31 AM ^
Looks like a fair call to me. He shoves the DB away to get separation.
November 21st, 2020 at 1:12 AM ^
99.99% of the time the officials don't make that call. Makes me wonder.
But the important thing is that Minnesota won a football game so maybe they don't suck that bad and we have a chance to beat Rutgers.
November 21st, 2020 at 1:18 AM ^
WR fully extends stiff arm to gain separation = OPI the argument that’s “not called” at that point of the game is stupid
November 21st, 2020 at 2:34 AM ^
Our win over Minnesota is looking better and better lol!
November 21st, 2020 at 3:48 AM ^
Honestly true though, there only other losses were to decent Maryland and Iowa teams
November 21st, 2020 at 11:18 AM ^
Sure, and I wonder how many wins that powerhouse MSU team will rack up this season...

Reminds me of that Kittle call in the super bowl which was weak and phantom like
November 21st, 2020 at 9:11 AM ^
Does this at least get people off the Jeff Brohn train?
November 21st, 2020 at 9:49 AM ^
Atrocious, game changing calls. At some point we have to acknowledge that this a feature of Big Ten officiating and not a bug.
November 21st, 2020 at 10:11 AM ^
I will put my initial reaction to that this way - I am certainly not Jeff Brohm, but I wanted a go at the refs. That really was a bullshit call among bullshit calls.
