Plantom Offensive PI call on Purdue cements minnesota win.

What the eff was that? Such a peepee call to decide a game.

Eh. He did fully extend his arm. Didn't really look like it slowed the DB down, but that's exactly the kind of thing the refs look out for. It was iffy, but I feel like refs don't call offensive PI enough in general.

Didn't Minnesota get screwed on a PI a couple drives before on 3rd down and later resulted in a Purdue TD? My stream lagged so I missed it but it sounded like the announcers disagreed with the call.

Correct.  That shit has long been annoying to watch and would be great to see it change. The receiver can push off and get away with quite a bit (sure, some egregious stuff gets flagged every now and then) but when a defender gets seen doing some contact that may or may not exactly affect the ability for the receiver to catch the ball it gets flagged more times than not. Shit has ruined the game for me.

Exactly.  When something positive happens for your team, the first thing you think of: "Where's the flag?".

The refs make the game about themselves way too often.  When they can call a penalty on every single play for some minor infraction, it just wrecks the game.  Basketball is even worse.  Hockey is not much better.  Baseball is way better, but I would be in favor of an electronic strike zone.  MMA is the best, refs rarely ruin the match.

I cant believe Fleck survived that game after his dumbass decision to go for it on 4th and 1 at his own 30. And yes he did a wildcat play to get stuffed as well. Purdue missed 2 chip shot fg's to lose this game. And that absolutely was not opi.

That was a travesty, and a reminder that you never bet against the teams that did not want to play this year.  That call was no accident.

A really bad beat if you took Purdue -3

There is a video going around that shows the arm extension that gives him an extra half step separation. I don’t think it is as bad as people are making it

I saw that angle and will agree that it's a callable play.  However.  During any other part of the game, that IS NOT called OPI.  More likely, the DB will get flagged in the middle of the game for something that weak.  That is not the place to call such ticky-tack bullshit.  The ref was super anxious to watch for anything, and he blew the no-call that is not called at any other time in the game.

Call the game the same way throughout.

It would make sense (considering we have like 1 receiver over 6'2 in Cornelius Johnson) to get your speed guys in situations to let them make plays and get some YAC but it appears we've taken the approach of trying something once a game and making sure we run up the middle into a stacked box to make sure we get 3rd and long.

Officiating in sports has been broken for awhile and football is no differen

My personal favorite quirk is how reviews work, in which a referee can be out of position for a bang-bang play and make a random guess immediately after the play (because they're required to). Then the play is reviewed from several different angles, in slo mo, and with time to process the play, only for the original call to stand if the play doesn't meet the arbitrary requirement of "indisputable evidence" to the contrary. Make no mistake, the referree is GUESSING about the outcome of the play because no human being can triangulate the location of a yard line on the field, the ball, and a specific part of a player's body touching the ground in real time. Further, if no human being can do that, neither can a fucking 60 year old man or John O'Neil do it. WE HAVE THE FUCKING TECHNOLOGY, GET THE CALL RIGHT AND STOP TRYING TO SAVE FACE FOR THE OFFICIALS. Entire outcomes of games are being decided on by a guess, and tonight was no exception

WE HAVE THE FUCKING TECHNOLOGY, GET THE CALL RIGHT AND STOP TRYING TO SAVE FACE FOR THE OFFICIALS

How do you see technology solving the problem? Serious question. What “technology” is going to (for example) spot a football more correctly? A micro-chip in the ball? You’d have to have at least 6 to cover every direction the ball would have to be at when the player advances. And how does technology address determining whether a knee or forearm or other body part had made contact with the playing surface?

Outside of replay, “technology” has no place In officiating.

That call SHOULD be called every single fucking time like it is (mostly) on the defense.  But it's not and it's a pretty crummy and oddly specific time to actually throw a flag.

99.99% of the time the officials don't make that call. Makes me wonder.

But the important thing is that Minnesota won a football game so maybe they don't suck that bad and we have a chance to beat Rutgers.

Atrocious, game changing calls.  At some point we have to acknowledge that this a feature of Big Ten officiating and not a bug.
