Piped in music getting ridiculous

Submitted by UMxWolverines on

Ok I'm all for it when it gets the crowd loud (Seven Nation Army, RAWK), but Sexy and I know it? Really? I don't know any of the other stuff they played besides Sweet Caroline and Don't Stop Beliving but it was all pretty terrible and it really didn't help with atmosphere at all.

I thought there was a good mix of having the band play during some timeouts and whatever the music they played also.  I think they have reached a good middle ground to me, it's clear it isn''t going away but they aren't making the band a nonfactor like at Penn State these days.

piped in music definitely makes for a more fun environment but they need to take a page out of the hockey band's playbook when choosing songs. The hockey band plays relevant, fun songs that people can sing along to, but they play them once.   No one reacts to the band playing cadances between plays but also no one reacts to seven nation army on a second down in the 3rd quarter. There needs to be a mix that can maximize participation from the crowd.

I've been pretty Meh about the Piped In Music so far, I mean I remember after UTL when they played it and it got the Old people behind me jumping around. But it's seems like it's been playing WAY too much. I think they're overusing Seven Nation Army and Journey should never be played ever

You know what?  Maybe this isn't about you (us) as fans.  The players enjoy the piped in music.  That is a fact.  If Seven Nation Army helps our defense get up for a big set of downs, so be it.  I couldn't give two shits about whether this is "so SEC" or "minor league hockey-esque".  If our players enjoy it, nobody should complain.  It could be worse.

Stop kvetching.

Support this team, the program, the AD, and our players.

So when you are at the gym, on a run, or at a tailgate, there aren't any songs that just fire you up when you hear them?

Everybody has different tastes.  For you, that song may be Slayer, it may be Metallica, it may be Kanye, or, judging by your comment, it may be Sarah McClachlan.

For the players it happens to be Seven Nation Army.  If it helps the players, we should all be able to deal with it.

Seven Nation Army is way overplayed. It would be good every once in a while to help fire up the student section, but when they play it about 10 times per game, it's just annoying.

My main complaint is the "Seven Nation Army" before a bunch of defensive plays.  Way overdone.  Other than that, they've used the piped-in music reasonably sparingly.

If so many of you are that pissed about the piped in music ruining your game day experience then do something about it. Do not renew your season tickets or don't pay up to attend games. If enough of you share the same view, the AD will certainly get the hint. Until then, it is here to stay.

7NA only on 3rd downs?  Then followed by the band's Temptation?  Rocket Man by Elton John was cool.  The Blue Hairs were singing like crazy.

I guess I prefer the Band and less piped in music.  Wait......is my hair turing blue??????  Lord please help me.

The marching band is part of the college football experience. So is a raucous crowd and a home field advantage. I've been a season ticket holder for 19 years now and love the new atmosphere and piped in music. In past seasons, the Big House has felt like nothing more than a giant, outdoor library. The music makes the fans louder and brings more stadium noise. That's what home field advantage is about.

M has never had a problem winning at home, (except for the last 3 years). My point is that the noise created by the piped in music makes for a more raucous atmosphere. I've been to road games all over the B1G and the crowds seem way more "into it" than our crowd has ever been...until this year.

That's cool, but frankly, I don't care what Northwestern needs to do to get their 50 fans into supporting a team that has a hard time winning a football game. The Purdues and Minnesotas of the world don't have the greatest college fight song ever written, the best college marching band in the country, the biggest stadium in the country, and a school with an iota of the tradition and prestige of the University of Michigan. We give way too much credit to a "raucous atmosphere" (which is a purely subjective term anyway), and not enough credit to the kinds of things that actually win ballgames. Blocking, tackling, catching, throwing, kicking, technique, scheme, those win football games. The White Stripes don't.

Does anyone else dislike the "you suck" chant as much as me?  I've always thought it's so stupid.  The band part is great and I like the ominous feel of it but saying You Suck just seems pretty weak to me. Especially the last couple years when we would do it after one good third down play even when we were losing and/or getting dominated the entire rest of the game and it was clear our defense was the one that sucked.

I do normally dislike the You Suck chant, since it's very rare to find the sweet spot where the other team actually does suck, AND there's still a reason to unleash such a negative cheer on them.
For instance, when Michigan's beating up on a MAC team, then sure: they suck. BUT, why bother to tell EMU they suck?  They're not expected to keep up with Michigan, everybody knows the way the game is supposed to end; it's just mean.
On the other hand, it's probably a lot worse to yell "You suck!" at a team that is actually winning, as has often happened over the last 3 years.  When the visiting fans can laugh and legitimately respond, "Scoreboard!", maybe this is a bad idea.  Even more worse, the You Suck chant was probably answered 10 or more times by 4th down conversions in the last few years.  That sucks.

I have to admit, though, after Purdue's missed-call-assisted quick strike and general horsefaceyness on Saturday, I did have to crack a smile as the student section informed them of their lack of football talent.
I wish the student section could be coordinated well enough that somebody could make the call to chant or not chant on a situational basis. Two consecutive punts for any B1G opponent not in the middle of a GopherQuest? You Suck! Any punts when Appalachian State comes back in 2014? YOU SUUUUUUCK. Baby Seal U is setting up for a field goal? Maybe we don't need to yell this time.

With all that said, I would prefer if this cheer could be traded in for something positive, like the similarly-syllabled "Go Blue."  There's just something so middle-school-ish (i.e., Danny Hope-like) about it.

I'm just happy this is the biggest gripe with yesterday's game.  I was at the Clemson @ Georgia Tech game yesterday, and their piped in music is 90% rap,  Waka Flaka type rap too, not even good stuff.

it gets the crowd which we are always talked down about here at Michigan pumped up. One of my favorite college traditions beside the U of M is Wisconsin and the timeout between 3rd and 4th quarter Jump around by House Of Pain. Man that would get me jacked if I were rooting for the Badgers. Our fans yell atme every year for freaking staanding I mean I live in Ohio and it is my vacation to come up to Ann Arbor and I feel like the older fans deserve there fun but holy crap they want to just sit and listen to the game on there radio and make almost zero noise. So if the piped in music gets only 10 percent more people up and going crazy like it did for me at the UTL game then I am all for it.

Maybe the mix of music had something to do with homecoming and all the old people who were back in town at the game?

I know the argument would be, wouldn't they just prefer the band, because that's what they had. But, if DB is trying to sell a new expereince, maybe the mix of music was supposed to do that.

Disclaimer, I was not at the game, only what I could tell over the ESPN2 broadcast.

Piped in music is here to stay, regardless of what anyone really wants.  I think the best way to reduce the complaining is for the athletic department to start cracking down on exactly what songs people want.  Perhaps they could do something akin to what the marching band did with "fan appreciation day," and let people vote in X amount of categories ranging from what songs should be played to when they should be played.

serious about liking it which I cant really tell, I also like the music I am telling people the music helped without a doubt for the UTL game. The stadium was rocking and I had no voice after the game from screaming seven nation army for 4 quarters. I mean the game also helped but the music was great lol.

Yesterday was the closest to a minor league baseball game experience I've ever had at Michigan Stadium.  The RAWK was out of control(and more often than not earsplittingly loud), the Rocket Man deal struck me as an unnecessary gimmick (play the Space, Bitches PSA and call it a day), that train graphic on the scoreboards, everything felt extraordinarily cheap and generic.  Very un-Big House-esque.

And, here' s a fun fact:  One of the highlights of Homecoming has always been the alumni cheerleaders doing gymnastic tricks in the end zones during stoppages in play.  It's fun, and always gets the fans really into things during lulls in the action.  They were told this year they were not allowed to do flips and such on the field, or so one of them told a few of us in Alumni Band.  And it was true, they basically just sat and did nothing for the entire game.

A little bit at a time, the uniqueness of Michigan is being chipped away in favor of a generic, corporate, sterile experience.  Seems to me "revenue streams" and marketing gurus rue the day in DB's Athletic Department, and it really doesn't need to be that way.

The alumni cheerleaders doing their thing is one of the highlights of homecoming for me, and I definitely noticed when they didn't come around doing flips and shit for the whole game (although at one point during the fourth quarter they came by and one of them did an awesome handstand).

It makes me really sad that they were told they couldn't do their gymnastics this year, do you have any idea why? :/

the mix yesterday was different than most other games.  Because of the tribute to the Apollo 15 "all Michigan" crew ... the MMB played "2001 A Space Odyssey" and the RAWK included "Rocketman".  No Journey yesterday either.

Also the atmosphere was less than exciting ... the students were REALLY late getting to the game ... and also left before the end.  I know the rain didn't help, but when the team ran over to the students after the game there were maybe 10 rows of students.  Part of this was because it was Purdue and the other part was ANOTHER 12noon START.  We have had 1 3:30 start this year ... which sucks.
