Pete Carroll's comments on Helton firing

Submitted by StateStreetApostle on September 13th, 2021 at 10:42 PM

Apologies, as there is already a thread on the firing; but come for the memories:

“I know I got beat by Stanford a couple of times, too,” Carroll said. “It’s hard.

and stay for the ND shade:

"And like (former USC coach) John McKay always said, by far the toughest matchup we ever had was with Stanford, and it carries a lot of weight."

Andrew Luck wasn't his QB when he pulled off the biggest upset of 2007 and beat USC. Based on talent alone, that was a bigger upset than The Horror.

And as great as Luck was, his final team at Stanford was littered with future NFL standouts. He put together a great team at Stanford.

Oh, that one single game defined him as a "can't miss coach".  Got it.

Based on talent alone, Iowa State beating OU in Norman, in Campbell's 2nd year was a bigger upset, if that's how we are doing this. Jim at least had a recruiting class ranked 24th in the nation already established on that Stanford team.  Not amazing, but not chopped liver.

Here's to hoping he can remake some of that magic he had over a decade ago!

You don't know a fucking thing about football, or are so young you did not experience that era and are simply making shit up and talking through your ass.

The first Stanford vs USC upset was the biggest upset in college football history at that time, NOT App St. over UM.

That USC team was one of the greatest teams ever assembled. EVER.  Stanford had a bunch of ass playing for them. It was a marvelous Harbaugh coaching performance.  Simply impossible really.

horrible take and not remotely true.  Take a look at San Diego before and after Harbaugh, Stanford before and after Harbaugh, the 49ers before and after Harbaugh.  Hell, take a look at UM before Harbaugh.  The guy has 5 full seasons under his belt: 10 wins three times, 9 and 8.  Far better than his immediate predecessors.  And yes, I'm tossing out the 2020 COVID year where the State of Michigan was shut down and the B10 didn't play until November.

Harbaugh was the man 10-15 years ago, you won't get an argument from me about that.

I also love the way you worded "Harbaugh averages 4 losses a year at Michigan."  It does sound better only citing the wins. I can understand why you did that.

We are 2-0 and on top of the world right now. I get it.

So I'm getting the impression that you would advocate for a change from the current coaching set-up?  Fine.  Who is the can't miss guy that we can bring in to turn this around to your expectations?  Absent of that, these incessant bitch posts from fans about Harbaugh not delivering on his promise are tiresome.

Alex smith? Colin Kaepernick?  Got to the super bowl and not as if those guys were Brady or manning.  Greg Roman had a lotto do with it im sure, you can see some of what Baltimore is doing with Lamar Jackson in those Kaeperick schemes.  It was different than what the league was doing at the time. Tough for defenses built a certain way to adjust.

I'm still not sold that "Nitro" Harbaugh is what this team needs or if he was equivocally better than Harbaugh as he is now. Yes, the crazy and wild JH running up and down the sidelines throwing headsets, playing 7v7 with no shirt on and mainly just freaking out the CFB neighborhood is fun for a while but it's not sustainable, especially if you're not winning meaningful games.

He's still got a little crazy in him and given the opportunity, he will ruffle some feathers but I say let the dude coach and don't worry about the antics.

I believe if I were the guy who left town the minute he knew sanctions were coming, sending one of the sport's blue bloods into a tailspin even though they are one of the easiest programs to win at, I'd probably shut the fuck up.

Whatever. Dude is a legend. Very few people have had success like he has at the collegiate and professional level. Given the joke the NCAA is as an institution, I have no issues with his USC teams. And his record at Seattle is phenomenal. He has earned the right to say whatever he wants regardless of anyone’s opinion of him.

edit: and to pin 20 years of ineptitude on him at USC is just ridiculous.

I'd slow my roll (tide) a bit there. Not sure Pete is on the "same" level as Saban. Granted they are doing things in different eras of football so it's hard to compare but PAC12 then isn't the SEC today and USC's run of dominance doesn't really hold up to Saban's LSU and now Bama's run. That's not to take anything away from how good USC was (they were great) but it's not in Saban's league.

It's less about players getting paid and more about how he snuck out the back door so he didn't have to face any consequences.  He reaped the benefits and then found himself a nice cushy landing spot when things got tough

He also tried to have his cake and eat it too regarding Kaep.  Apparently Kaep was willing to sign with Seattle as a backup and Carroll said that he couldn't sign him in good conscience because Kaep is too good to be a backup.  He's a two faced prick who happens to be an outstanding football coach.

Yeah, my issue with him is he never took his medicine for breaking the rules.  I think a lot of the rules are dumb surrounding player payment but they absolutely knew they were wrong when they broke them and then when he saw sanctions coming he ran away.  That's shitty and glossing it over with "he won a bunch" doesn't matter for accountability.

I also find him personally a bit weird with some of his more conspiratorial viewpoints, but that's less about his coaching acumen.

Illegal, immoral, whatever you want to call those teams at USC under Carroll, they were loaded with talent. If that school ever gets another competent coach it will take all of 5 minutes for them to become elite again.

The real question isn’t where will Helton end up. It is why is it Bama as an analyst and what are other teams doing to change that? Including Michigan.
