Personal OT request

Submitted by poseidon7902 on

Mods, remove if you want, but I figure this can't hurt to try.  I was laid off from my position as an IT manager 2 weeks ago.  I know networking is a good way to get a job especially since many jobs won't ever get listed externally.  I live in the Atlanta area, but am open to relocation.  If anyone knows of any open IT Manager positions in their organization or can make a virtual intorduction to someone who can help/knows of a job, please reply here or email me at ryansjobs @ gmail .com .  No spaces obviously.  Thanks, and again, Mods, remove if you feel this isn't the place for it.

Exactly. Maybe the post is OT, but hell, so is half the crap that people post on this blog. (Seriously - do we need another "What's the most overrated TV show?" post?)

We all need help at some times - and it's not always easy to ask.

Besides, the guy was polite, articulate, and recognized that he might be crossing a line by posting. In other words, he was decent. So why not treat him decently?

If we're supposed to be the "Leaders and Best," maybe this is a good time to act like it.

Good luck, brother - and Go Blue!

Even though it is a sports blog, this is probably one of the better-connected communities in the Big Ten if not Division I and, weirdly enough, probably one of the best places to ask such questions despite the fact that it is as a sports blog. You're right - it isn't easy to ask this question, but hopefully the OP can get pointed in a direction or two if nothing else. We don't exactly encourage what are called "kiosk" type questions in blog parlance, but in this case, I thought I might leave it.

A higher power than I has spoken and this is the place apparently. I did want to see a job posting everytime someone on the board is looking for work. I, too, am out of work and looking for a job and I come here between job applications to get away from that stress but if LSA encourages this then more power to you. Hope this thread helps you out Poseidon.

You can connect with other colleagues, friends, classmates etc.  It's much great impact if someone referring you actually knows you.  I do wish you good luck finding a new job.

I signed up for the free month.  It doesn't give you much to be honest.  you get the ability to message 5 people each month (At the $30/month level) that you aren't connected with.  The way it tells you how you rank among other candidates is strictly crowd sourcing.  So when someone backs you for a skill, they weight that rating compared to others.  Since there's no way to verify if you really have those skills or if you're just having people rate you for skills to get a higher rating it's kind of a useless feature.  Outside of that it doesn't really give you much in the way of options.

Just applying via linkedin may be similar to applying on other sites.  But on LinkedIn if there's a specific position you're interested in, you can search the company and can get a list of people who work there.  If you've been in the same industry for a while, you may find someone there you may know or have worked with before.  And can reach out to them directly to put in a good word.  It's true, sometimes it is who you know rather than what you know.  Assuming that the people you know like you.  ;)

I can't help, but best of luck.  I know this is a football board, but I never mind topics so we can help each other out.

My Bro-in-law is about 61 and lost his IT job recently.  Two months later and he is back on his feet.  You will be to!

But this is a gift.  An opportunity to reset in ways that otherwise you could not or would not do.  Not just professionally.  You get a chance to evaluate what you want to do going forward.

Is seems awful in the moment but it always seemed to be a step forward. Networking though LinkedIn is good and if you are a Michigan Alumni there are ways to connect to Michigan alumni in LinkedIn which may help. Also Michigan has career help in many of their schools including Ross.

I have also had luck picking companies I wanted to work for and connecting them directly, even if they do no have openings. Contact an IT director, manager, VP and not HR. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is strong.

Yeah not sure why someone would neg somebody for reaching out to the mgoblog community. Jobs are not always easy to come by and I'll be damned if I don't extend a hand when I can. Add me on LinkedIn "Bradley Hooser".

as many others have said, IT pros aren't out of work long, so if you just plug away i'm certain something will come along in short order. Take care and Go Blue.

of being the world's largest living alumni is to leverage that bond and that network.

I appreciate not all fans are alums (and you don't have to be an alum to be a fan), but I know my Michigan connection has helped open doors for me.  And I appreciate the mods leaving this up, even though it's not OT season.

Good luck in your search.  I don't know of anything but will reach out if I do.

I wouldn’t be a big help but I wish you the best of luck. I’ve been there buddy, and I know what it’s like to be fired. Trust me when I say you’re not alone.

I work up in the tech corridor in Alpharetta and I know there are plenty of companies up here that are hiring. ADP has a huge office up here that is always looking to hire new talent.

seems like there would only be one opening for that, and I'm sorry to hear you've beenlaid off from it. Perhaps go manage Isiah Thomas? Careful though, I've heard he doesn't keep boundaries well.

All kidding aside, good luck with your search. I'm sure you'll land on your feet somewhere.
