Perry Dozier commits to USCe

Submitted by Tate on

One of our 2015 basketball targets, we were in his final 5 schools.

I guess it's not really a surprise that he didn't select us, but it is kind of surprising that he picked USCe over Louisville (his presumed number 2).

EDIT: Looks like some people are having trouble... USCe is South Carolina, USCw would be Southern Cal.

Understandable.  Coach Beilein has such a spotty record in getting his kids into the NBA especially when compared to the greatness that is Andy Enfield.

He's building a program that may be able to at least compete with Florida and Kentucky in a few years.  Considering the general weakness of the SEC, he may be positioning them for a tourney berth within a year or two.

Well, the good word is that we're finally getting the program off the ground there - found a coach, hired a staff, recruited some dudes. We're kind of hoping to turn it into a Florida Gulf Coast sort of thing actually and give our citizens there something to cheer about, or are we talking about a different Bolivia?

hes going to go and play ball in a nice climate for one winter, slay a ton of hot cali girls, get paid well, and then get drafted.  sounds like a great 7 months to me!

are in the 2016 basket.  Unless they pull a huge surprise with the few remaning 2015 guys, Michigan has a extremely important class coming up.

Yeah, Beileinwill be "fine" with 3-stars and sleepers and transfers, but if we want to make the final 4 again, we'll need some NBA caliber talent. 2016 is going to be huge.

Beilein has not made the final 4 without elite recruits. He might turn 2 out of 10 3-stars into NBA players but he's going to turn 8 out of 10 5-stars into NBA players.

Trey and Caris were 3 stars, so were Morgan and Horford, so were Vogrich and Bielfedt. Most of Beilein's guys have not been elite 5 stars, and he's had great success. But those guys had a lot of success beside 4 and 5 star guys (Hardaway, Stauskas, McGary, Robinson, Walton, Irvin).  He also leaned heavily on 4-star talents (Harris and Morris) to get through the 3-star heavy rosters.

Beilein is a great coach, but he got to the final 4 with 5 NBA players. You can find NBA players with 3-star backgrounds, but you are far more likely to find them with 5 star backgrounds. Beilein knows this, which is why he recruits elite players first, and then goes to 3-star types after those efforts don't pan out.  I don't think this is really worth arguing about as it should be obvious to anyone.

year for Beilein and the coaches.  Every guy they've targeted has either gone elsewhere or didn't work out for whatever reason.  But, Coach B probably doesn't let it bother him - he just moves on to his next option.  I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't get either Wagner or Brown, then he might find another real sleeper guy in the spring that he can turn into an All Big 10 player.  Still, worst case is they add another guy in 2016.  I do agree with Mat though that at some point soon, we do need to pick up some top 50 guys to ensure Michigan can get to the Final Four again.  Getting Teske is an excellent start for 2016.

Beilein's A-list guys have turned him down in two consecutive years. Chatman is the only possible exception.

I agree that Beilein seems to not let this drag him down, but a small part of him must wonder WTF?  5-stars should be crawling over each other to come to Michigan given his track-record the last few years. Especially guards.

whenever yet another Michigan bball recruit commits elsewhere, especially guards. Beilein has been THE best college coach at developing talent and turning players into NBA prospects the last few years. And he's a ridiculously nice guy who runs a clean program at the most elite level. Yet, he's something like zero for ten this year with recruiting targets this year. Seriously, WTF?

I don't think "We run a clean program and I'm a real nice guy" is a very strong selling point to many recruits, no matter how much we love it.  I don't mean to be cynical but I think a lot of people pay lip service to that sort of stuff but are more interested in fun, weather, and NBA-development.  And who are we to argue.  If you're trying to make the NBA in a year or two, I can't criticize someone for picking Kentucky, Florida, or OSU.
