Patience with Rex Ryan thin, calling out Chuck's DPOY award

Submitted by iawolve on
It is obvious he has a big mouth due to the fact that he has moons orbiting his enormous girth, but at what point does he stop being such a huge dick? I had not previously been a huge fan of the spouting off he was doing earlier in the season, considering he hasn't really done much yet. However, taking jabs at Chuck during your news conference, really? Focus on the personal not team goals. "You know what I would like? I would like to congratulate the people who voted for Darrelle Revis," Ryan said. "These guys obviously really know the game." The Jets coach took a not-so-subtle shot at Woodson, whose Packers gave up 51 points in Sunday's overtime loss to the Cardinals last Sunday. "A number that I think is interesting would be eight, and no, that's not the amount of touchdown passes that Green Bay gave up against Arizona. That is the number of touchdown passes we gave up all season at the Jets, and the biggest reason for that is Darrelle Revis." http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/2010/01/12/2010-01-12_r…

Chuck sure seems to attract whiners. First of all, he wins what the UT faithful still call "Peyton Manning's Heisman," now he wins "Darrelle Revis' DPOY award." To me it all boils down to a couple of equations: Charles Woodson = Winner Ryan + UT = Whiners Ultimately, though, it's better to be the person with the trophy than the one whining about not having it.

It may be the Jets homerism in me, but I see nothing wrong with this. I didnt see it as a jab at Woodson, but rather support for his guy. I believe that Woodson deserved the award for sure, but I was disappointed Revis didnt win because Im a big Jets and Revis fan. I think this is just the beginning of a great career for Revis, and I think he would do well to see Woodson as a role model in the future.

Ryan is just trying to get his team pumped up for the playoff game. He wants to get Revis angry and eager to show he deserved DPOY, thus making sure he'll show up to play this weekend. Don't take it personally dude, it is just a coach motivating his players.

You're right. Life should be all kisses, hugs and little care bears running around. I mean at Michigan we never talk trash on competitors. Nothing mean is ever said about Sweatervest, his Wine Cooler habit, Mr. Plow or Storm the Dorm Sparty. If Ryan wants to talk shit and say his team only gave up 8 passing TDs all year, let him. I doubt Woodson is sitting there, holding the DPOY trophy and sobbing cause Rex said mean things.

Not the argument, but the award for throwing in the most metaphorical references in one post. This isn't some 18 year old taking a jab at his rival. This is a 47 year old man, an NFL football coach. If he wants to compare Woodson's and Revis' stats to make his argument. I don't have a problem with that. But trying to trash Woodson to make his guy look better, and based on ONE GAME? Bush League. I look forward to the rant that this post sends you off on.......

Solo Ast Sack PDef INT Avg TD FF Revis 47 7 0 31 6 20.2 1 0 Chuckie 66 8 2 18 9 19.9 3 4 So I think that what this shows is that Woodson had the "sexier" stats but that Revis really had the better year as a shut-down corner. I really don't think that they could have gone wrong either way. Also take this sporcle quiz about Revis' season and I think that you might come to Rex Ryan's side on the issue.

I'm shocked Revis didn't win, and even more shocked the margin was so wide. Who votes on this award again? Revis had about as good a season as a cornerback can possibly have. He went up against almost every big name receiver in the league and shut them all down, with no exceptions. I have never seen anything like it. They should be considering him for league MVP. No, I'm not kidding. Edit: and I love Woodson as much as anyone. Class of '00, was there for every game from '96-'99.

I understand that he is defending his player but he still could have had a little class by stating that Charles Woodson had a great year as well or something to that effect. I have no problem with him taking up for his team or players but it seems to me imho that he was also saying Woodson was not deserving.

How did he take a shot at Woodson? He just thought Revis had a better year. He didn't say Woodson sucked or anything. He's saying, "If I had a vote, I would have voted for Revis." Do you think the people who voted for Revis were "taking a shot" at Woodson? No? Okay then.

not necessarily at Woodson, but at anyone who disagrees with Revis as DPoY: "I would like to congratulate the people who voted for Darrelle Revis," Ryan said. "These guys obviously really know the game." Not so subtly implying that those who voted for Woodson do not really know the game. But others have said, I doubt this bothers Woodson, so it sure as hell doesn't bother me.

Is Revis a better CB at this point?? Probably Who had the better year?? Probably Woodson. He made plays blitzing, with interceptions and forcing fumbles. They are different types of players, being used quite diffrently

This almost sounds like Manning talk when Chuck WON the Heisman over golden boy/band director Peyton. Where's my violin? I agree with what a previous poster said and respect Coach Ryan for backing his boy, though.

Revis had an absolutely incredible year. He shut down Andre Johnson, Randy Moss (twice), Marques Colston, TO (twice), Steve Smith, Roddy White, Reggie Wayne, and Chad Ochocinco (twice). Even if some of those guys aren't as good as they used to be (Moss/TO) or weren't giving full effort (Wayne/Ochocinco) he had an absolutely ridiculous season and basically eliminated the opponents top receiver every game.

I can't say what he did was wrong as he was sticking up for his guy. His comments about being the favorites to "win the tournament" weren't hateful towards anyone else. But for some reason this guy just rubs me wrong.

If Schwartz, by some stroke of miracle, had a player that could be in the running for an award like that I would be happy and excited if he did exactly what Ryan did.

To add to the choir - what Ryan did is fine. While Woodson is a deserving recipient of the award, I don't think anyone who follows the NFL can claim that Revas would not also be a worthy recipient. Also, OF COURSE Ryan is an ass. He's Buddy Ryan's son. He's also a hell of a coach, and his attitude, as a fan/observer is, at the very least, entertaining.

As a Jets fan and Wolverine, I see both sides of this. I was excited for Charles Woodson winning, because he is one of my favorite players all time. That said, Revis has been unbelievable and I thought objectively had the better season. I knew there was a good chance Woodson would get the award though, and I don't have a problem with it. I know Rex Ryan's comments will rub a lot of people the wrong way, and I'm sure he knew that at the time too. I dont think it bothers him if fans of other teams get annoyed and feel as though he is disrespecting their players. Rex wants the players to know he has their back, and I'm sure Revis loves the support form his coach.

Though not a Jets fan I live in NY and have seen a lot of Ryan this year. I think what he did was okay - he is backing his guy. To his credit he is riding a high with his team right now - the Jets have been real doormats for a long time and this is big for them. His father had the same bluster only worse. Woodson won the award so leave it at that. I thought Revis' comments were fairly modest and classy. No denying the guy is good. Ryan and the Jets are moving to a bigger stage this week - should be interesting.

I find it amusing that there is so much crying when Charles wins an award. There is a reason Woodson won the Heisman, ROTY and DPOY. Must just be lucky. All three times.

First defensive player to win the heisman against arguably the best QB ever. DPOY against a phenomenal corner in Revis. The folks he beat out are phenomenal players and speak to his achievemnts. Congrats to him. The Hall of Fame would really cap it off.

He's endorsing his player who arguably could be the best in football in the coming years. It's not like his statements are ridiculous, a good case can be made for Revis. This is how the Ryan's are, it's how they live and how they coach; consequently, it's how their teams become the way they are, which is pretty darn good. I personally like his (More general, the Ryan's) style.
